Photoshop Digital Imagery task. 

For my final piece I used all the information that I found through my previous experimenting and my knowledge of composition to create this. I used one of the pictures from my 6 picture journey task and a fish that I had photoshopped onto another picture earlier then blended them together to make a more realistic image. The reason I chose this picture is because I felt like I had more room to be creative with my design. I also chose to photoshop the fish to make the image look slightly off. Originally it was only going to be the one fish in the background and I was going to blur everything else, but later I added more a more creative spark and added another fish into the water with shadows to show off the new skills I had learned. I also added the tail of another fish into the corner to create an idea in the audiences head that the fish are jumping. I used a blur effect on the fish tail and the fish in the water then created more of a dark hue around the whole image except for the main focus: the fish in the background. I wanted the fish in the background to be the main focus to show to the audience of this image that something is slightly off and with the fish in the background being much bigger it made sense to make it the main focus to prove this point. I then cut out the water and added more of a darker hue and contrast - to create a strong apocalyptic feel. I had a bit more trouble cutting out the trees and adding more blur to them but in the end I managed to affectively add shadows where they fit in the water and on the sides of the bushes. Overall I enjoyed this project and it helped me understand photoshop easier. To improve this I think I could have used the pen tool more so that I didn't waste that much time and paid more attention to the building, perhaps adding more creepy images or something like fog to reinforce the idea of more eeriness within the image.

Photoshop Digital Imagery Task.

Above are some rough sketches I have done for my photoshop task. In the beginning I found this task much harder as this was my first time using photoshop but after experimenting with the hues, brightness and different layers I finally managed to walk away with a few outcomes I enjoyed and more experience. For the first photoshopped image I played around more with the hues and colour to attempt to get the dragon to successfully fit in with the page but I ended up over-complicating a few things and over time realised simpler ways to quickly do the tasks I wanted. This eventually led to me experimenting more with the colour overlay on my other pieces and how they can affectively change the image to what I wanted it to be, which you can see more in my 5th image as I experimented more with the brightness with this image but also with the value in the image. In my 2nd image I focused more on the lighting and what direction it was coming from and framing, making the fish the biggest object in the picture so it really stood out. In my 3rd I wanted to pay attention to more detail within the image. I framed the first burger to be the biggest image on the page then had more tiny burgers placed around it in the background to make more excitement around the image and attract the eye. This was also the first time I used blur to show how close something was which will be useful when I’m doing my final image. I also got more of an opportunity to experiment with the lighting here and move it so the light reflecting onto the burgers was only from the lamp. For my 4th image I focused on learning how to effectively cut out parts of an image and change the colour overlay, I also tried to pay more attention to how I was including silhouettes in my work. My last image I used to experiment and get use to colour overlays and how the layer opacity can change my work. To improve this I would pay more attention to the shadows within my work and pay attention to more compositional elements that I could have included in my work.

6 Principles of Composition and Colour.

For this task I had to use the library online to find different sources to help me figure out what types of composition and colour to do research on and include within my own work on photoshop. I researched different elements of composition and colour and chose a few that I considered more important to further research on. In this task we have to quote our source, where its from and how we have included in our own work. I have yet to finish this task as I am currently in the middle of my 6 photoshop sketches but I am considering where I can include these elements within my own work.

6 Principles of Composition and Colour.

This task was getting me to familiarise myself with elements of composition that I could include in my final piece on photoshop. For this piece I payed more attention to the narrative structure of my pictures and decided to change them around a little as I thought this worked better, however I might end up changing it again when I begin to start to sketches of my 6 images before my final piece as the 6 word prompts that I currently have may change how the narrative plays out. In this lesson I began so familiarise myself with the different way colour and composition can effect my work and will use this information later on when I come to do my experimenting in photoshop with my pictures and will reinforce in my final image. Learning about how colour, shapes and rhythm within has changed how I view other work and my own work and improved my thoughts on different art pieces and how I could improve my own art pieces in the future.

Digital Imagery: Journey

This week I began my second project which is digital imagery: Journey. I had to go out and take 6 pictures around Norwich that create a narrative journey. I started during the day and stayed out to night to get some creepy pictures for my narrative story because I wasn't sure yet what I wanted my narrative journey to be. when I finally looked at my pictures I decided that a hero's narrative (calm, imbalance, tension, conflict, resolution and home) would work best, but I wanted to add a slightly creepy twist to it with some of the darker pictures I took. I’, still unsure if this will be the final narrative I put my images in or if I will move my images around depending on what I next plan to do with them once I figure out my 6 word prompts and what elements of composition I want to include in them.

Improvement  

“To improve this I could make the tennis ball move faster and make the bowling ball slower and heavier.”

I went back over my week 2 work to do improvement and found more to improve upon than what I originally said I needed to improve on. With the tennis ball I took out any additional frames that were not needed which allowed the animation to run smoother than before, put the frames closer together so the tennis ball moved faster but also took the blur off which I think makes the movement look more defined. I also added a slight rotation to the tennis ball to make its movement more believable. For the bowling ball I reinforced the idea of it being heavy and having extra weight by having it move much slower and having a slight bounce to it but not to the same extreme as the tennis ball or the balloon. I also removed frames in the bowling ball so make it smoother and more realistic. This has improved my work because it makes the dynamics of each ball more believable.

Improvement.

“To improve this I think I could make the square have less squash on it and to make the circle move faster.”

I went back over my week 1 work and fixed some of the improvements I wanted to make. In addition to speeding up the way the ball moves I took out any extra frames to make the movement smoother. I think this makes the animation much smoother and have more believable dynamics which was the original intent. I also made the ball move quicker around the edges. I think this improves my work because the movement is more believable.

Drawing Workshop

For the beginning of todays drawing workshop we were continuing figure drawings but each pose we had connected to the other to create a more solid movement that you can see within the poses. For each sketch we had 30 seconds. After that we began just focusing on hands and the detail on hands, I used a smaller space in my sketchbook but to improve this I should have drawn the hands bigger to fit on the page so I could pay more attention to detail on them. Our focus was the different shapes included just on the hand but also how each finger moved and how that effected how we should draw them.

Golden Ratio Research.

The Golden Ratio And Fibonacci Numbers, The World Scientific

This book talks about the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci numbers, taking interest behind the math's of it all and the shapes we have can see that follow the Golden Ratio. It talks about what subjects may find the Golden Ratio interesting but I kept my focused on how the Golden Ratio was involved in art. I think this source is reliable as it goes into deep detail about the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci numbers but there is only a small amount of information to due with the Golden Ratio within art.

“ The aesthetic appeal of the golden ratio in art has been the subject of a number of studies (e.g. Runion 1972). While it is true that many paintings include rectangular components which have aspect ratios near the golden ratio there is rarely any evidence that the artist considered the golden ratio in any conscious way in the composition of the painting. Rather it is likely that rectangular elements with aspect ratios near r (or perhaps near fi, 3f2 or 6) provided pleasing proportions. “  This quote talks about artist using the Golden Ratio within their art and while the Golden Ratio is seen in many paintings it also mentions that there's rarely evidence that artist use the Golden Ratio in the art which intrigues me as the Golden Ratio is sometimes seen as an important factor while drawing the human figure but this suggest its not as important as others may think.

Week 4 Adobe After Effects

Using the skull and eye pattern that I drew and animated, I joined them together and used the new skills I have learned to create this simple short loop where the skulls slide across the screen and I drew a witches hat to accompany the animation at the bottom. I also used https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel to find a monochromatic colour scheme that fits a Halloween theme. To improve this I could work on the loop a bit more because the eye is slightly out of sync and added more exciting animations within the loop.

Week 4 Adobe After Effects

I also quickly animated an eye moving around, keeping up with the creepy Halloween theme. Just like the skeleton before it is a short loop I made on Adobe After Effects and I used the clips on the VLE too help me quickly create this. The task at the end of this week is to use all the information we have learned to create a short Halloween animated loop. To improve this for my final task I could make the eye use up more room, making it bigger and grabbing more attention from the viewer.

Week 4 Adobe After Effects

This is just a short looping clip of a skeleton wiggling that I used after effects to make, I created it using the pen tool to draw out the shape of a skull and then cutting out specifically the shape of the jaw so i could animate it and have it wiggle by itself.

Drawing Workshop

Today I went out and took sketches of people around me/objects around me. Our task was to sketch out a bunch of objects and place them together and make a good composition. I drew sketches of my peers, some warning signs I saw and the inside of a building. Using those sketches I pieced them together to get my finial composition where I tried to focus on symmetry but it didn't really work. Sadly, I never got to finish it but to improve it I would focus on more of the points on composition I was taught.  For example, I should consider more balance and where I want to lead the eye.

Drawing Workshop.

Today we focused on different types of perspective we can create within our art and above are some notes on perspective within drawings, composition and the golden ratio. This was very helpful as most of the information I was given I didn't know before. Above are some notes I took along with drawings to help me remember the different types of perspectives.

Tonal Drawing.

Today I practiced tonal drawings in my mid-tone sketchbook. We practiced shapes. I think for most of the drawing I enjoyed the work and began to get more comfortable using the white pencil to show where the light is placed within my work. To improve this I think I should watch my lines while I’m shading because I ended up with a few scratchy lines. I also think I should begin to work on including a background within my art.

Week 3 Adobe After Effects

The first task we had to create our own circles and make a path with them using the pen tool, I found this task relativity easy as we were finding new ways to move around objects and getting use to making our own objects and working with the layers. I was experimenting with Adobe and how objects can move in certain ways/ how to change the way they move. I then began to run into a bit of trouble with the skateboard task as I couldn't seem to get the pivot point in the center of the circle which cause some problems for how the skateboard moved but in the end I managed to achieve my goal and have the skateboard move more naturally. After that I started my assault course which was very exciting as I got to be as creative as I wanted and I had previously did some planning and tried to achieve what I had planned out. There are some differences to the original plan, mainly to do with the shapes. I changed a few of them to make them easier to move and to look more threatening, to look more like a video game level. To improve this I feel like I could have spent more time on the assault course to fix small mistakes.

For adobe week 3 I had to make an assault course that obeyed real world physics, to do this I had to use everything that we had previous learned and put it in one animation clip. Above is how I planned out what I wanted to happen within my animation and how it would play out. In the beginning I focused on parts how I wanted my assault course to look and how a ball would move in it. I came up with 3 ideas and took parts from all ideas that I enjoyed the most to create my final idea. After I figured out what I wanted to include in my assault course I wanted to sort out how it would look and how the ball would move around, which you can see in the second picture.
