If you have a house pet, I beg you please PLEASE don’t leave it outside - A persons dog has already been beaten by the cold two days ago when he was left outside overnight, he would still be alive right now if the owners had kept him inside.
If there are feral cats living around your area please do what you can to help them, they’re small and need a little help in order to survive the rest of the week. Here’s some things you could do to help, and these could be the difference of an animal surviving or dying ;
If a cat is friendly and will let you touch it or pick it up, bring it inside. It doesn’t have to be a permanent thing but bring the animal into your home just for a few hours, if you’re worried about your furniture or if it goes to the toilet on the floor or if you have other pets that aren’t sociable set a room with food , water, a bed or blanket, and lay newspaper covering the floor and close the door. It may sound cruel locking an animal in a room alone but it’s a lot better than it freezing to death in the snow
If the cat you’re trying to save or help is too scared to come inside, set up a shelter. A good thing to use would be a garden shed, set up the bed, food and water for the night in the back corner of the shed and move anything dangerous either on a high shelf or out of the shed completely. If you don’t have a shed, find a big box in your house and set up blanket, food and water in there. Try and put the box under a tree or somewhere sheltered from harsh wind and snow, if you own a garden table you can also put the box under the table for extra protection
When a cat comes to your door looking for food and drink, please give it food. If you don’t own any cat food scraps and cold meats could do but keep in mind that there’s some foods not good for a cats digestive system.
If you’re giving a cat milk try and give it cat milk instead of regular milk. Some cats are lactose intolerant and most cat milks are lactose free, but regular milk is fine too. Heat up the milk in the microwave for a few seconds and let it cool a bit so it doesn’t burn their tounges. The warmth from the milk will heat up their bodies a bit.
In regards to the last point, the same goes for water, if you’re giving cats water give them warm water to heat up their bodies.
If you’re giving a cat food (lots of people mightn’t be able to do this step) but try crushing up a food supplement tablet into the food, I give the ferals who live in my garden at least 1 tablet between all of them a day. A good supplement to use is “I-Lysine”. You can get a special version for cats but the human one works just the same and a bottle is half the price. I use the measurements one 1000mg tablet per 5 cats.
Try keep the cats moving. This one sound weird but listen, our bodies warm up when we’re doing exercise so it should be the same for other animals too. Give the cats a toy (a jingley ball or shining a laser pointer is good). This step won’t work that well with older cats but will most likely help with young cats or kittens since they’re more likely to play with toys.
If there’s a lot of snow covering the ground outside in your garden and it’s obvious that the cold is hurting the cats paws, wait until there are no cats in your garden and pour boiling water on a sheltered area of the garden so when the cats do come back they will have a small space where their paws won’t feel as cold (keep in mind that the water will probably freeze again after a few hours)
I really hope some people will take these point into consideration when trying to help a stray or ferel cat outside over the next few days.
Please keep your animals inside.Keep your pets inside for the rest of the week, it doesn’t matter if your dog is barking more or your cat keeps meowing at you, it’s a lot better to let your animals annoy you for a few days then to leave them freeze in the snow.
If you own a cat and it does get out, put their dirty litter tray outside and shake it every few minutes, cats can smell their litter tray from up to a mile away and will be able to use that scent to track its way home if it does get lost
