Pete’s heart stops dead in his chest, his tongue sticking to the roof of his mouth. He stares at Patrick’s hand. It’s too much, too fast. If he let himself imagine that this was inevitable, he at least thought he’d have time to work up to it. Then he remembers what he was like at 23, galloping through life at a thousand miles an hour. What a stupid thing to think, that Patrick might move slower than that. Patrick’s twenty-percent classical piano and eighty-percent hips and Pete’s one hundred-percent fucked.

“Well?” Patrick prompts.

My first fic. EVER. I am afraid but here we are.

So I am writing my first fic and am probably going to post the first chapter on AO3.. Do you have any advice on how to get readers/feedback? I'm super nervous to post it! But I am also equally worried that no one will read it because it's my first one ever.. Thoughts?

It’s always scary to step into a new fandom so, first off, kudos for being brave enough to start writing something!

As far as building up a readership, the best thing you can do is be consistent. Have a bunch of chapters under your belt before you start posting so you can establish a posting schedule without putting too much pressure on yourself. It doesn’t have to be twice-a-week, but it is helpful if readers have a good idea about when they can expect the next update. I like posting weekly, but fortnightly/monthly is great, too. Just try to keep it consistent.

I’d also recommend promoting your fic on tumblr. Just links are fine but adding a moodboard or graphic can make it a little more eye catching, not to mention it can be lots of fun sifting through photos for just the right ones to fit the mood of your fic!

Finally, try not to get too hung up on stats. I know feedback is important and every writer adores and cherishes every single comment they receive, but they’re not the only reason to write. Plus, it can take a while for readers to recognise your name and seek out your fics, so just enjoy what you write and send me a link once you’ve posted it—I can’t wait to check it out!

“You gave your number to the intern?” Vicky explodes. “Do you remember the grounds Mikey is relying on for this divorce? The paperwork we went over? Where he accused you of having sex with your intern?”

“It’s not the same intern,” Pete croaks, because if he doesn’t say something in his own defence, who else will? Not the person he’s paying to defend him in court, apparently.

She holds up one hand, eyes closed. “Don’t. Do not.”

Gabe presses a finger to Patrick’s lips. Patrick glares and imagines biting him. Hard. “Shh, intern,” Gabe says. “Grown-ups are talking.”

writing fanfiction is just. i’m being so creative and original. i’m plagiarizing everyone by accident. i’m a genius. i’m cringe. i’m too angsty. i’m too cheesy. this is not in character. it doesn’t matter that it’s not in character because these are my characters now. i love my hobby. this is the worst possible use of my time. i’m seeking validation. i’m projecting my own personal problems onto this story and i’m barely hiding it. i know so many words and i’m using all of them wrong. im on tumblr posting about it instead of writing it.

If Patrick looks closely—and he does—he can see the moment the portcullis slams down behind Pete’s eyes. Patrick feels immediately like the shittiest person in any given room. It’s not that he wants to hurt Pete’s feelings. He doesn’t. It’s just, he’d rather hurt Pete’s feelings than explain his own, to his boss, in a bougie restaurant in Gold Coast.

“How much of that did you hear?” Pete asks, gathering whatever dignity he has left close to his chest. It’s a very small amount of dignity.

“Uh, like. Most of it,” Patrick confirms. He’s gone a little pink himself with second-hand embarrassment. “Or, um... all of it.”

For the second time in five minutes, Pete lowers his head to the desk. “Well, shit. Fuck my life, I guess.”

“That seemed…” Patrick says, gesturing to Pete’s phone.

“Personal?” says Pete, trying to work out what to do with his hands.

“Rough,” Patrick offers, shrugging in sympathy.

It’s weird in a way, when Pete thinks about it— how similar it all is to when they were alive. Going out to dinner with Joe and Andy is the same as it’s always been, just now Pete and Patrick hold hands under the table and share a dessert more often. Practicing their songs hasn’t changed, except for how Pete can hang off Patrick as much as he wants, and he can put his head in Patrick’s lap when he’s composing, too. They watch movies on the couch together, just like they always have, but when Pete becomes more interested in the way Patrick’s eyes are glinting in the moonlight instead of the movie, he doesn’t have to hide it: he’s free to adore and compliment and kiss as much as he wants.

It’s pretty fucking awesome, really.

Can you tell me what your top five peterick fics are? Preferably long ones with some smut? 🤪 I’m feeling the big sad tonight and I’m hoping to distract myself. 

Top 5, huh? Tricky, but here goes!

5. Clarity by frais this is a two-parter coming in at just under 75k total. Patrick is a criminal profiler, Pete is a homocide detective. The series examines grief, divorce, friendship and some pretty unhealthy coping mechanisms but it blows me away every time I read it.

4. And I'll Burn by @jiksax Oh my god, this fic. This fic. It was one of the first recs I was given and I was like, okay, hooker fic? I've read a few hooker fics, how different can this one be? And then I read it. And I think I cried for a solid hour once I'd finished. And I thought about it constantly for the best part of a week. And then I read it again. Haunting, beautiful, bittersweet and hopeful. The only reason it's not higher on my list is because I'm still mildly resentful that it made me cry. For an hour.

3. Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? by @the-chaotic-panda Panda asked me what I'd like for my birthday back in 2018 and I told her I'd love a fic with the same sort of vibe as an episode of Black Mirror. But, like, Black Mirror when it was made by Channel 4, for the UK, and not Netflix. She wrote me this absolutely intense, white-knuckle ride of a political thriller/dystopian horror and it is amazing. (There's not a ton of smut in this one, so if that's what you're after then honourable mention to panda's swashbuckling bodice-ripper Hell or High Water!)

2. Patricksitting (Call it a Love Song) by adellyna Just a fun, smutty fic, the kind of thing that livejournal was built on. I love Patrick's voice in this, it's so on point for a 17 year old. I've been reading and rereading this for 14 years and I still adore it.

1. Pull Hard and Make a Wish by @coricomile I think I can safely say that this is my comfort blanket. I read it once every couple of months and die a little inside every time. Angst, coming of age, growing up, smut. This fic has it all. If it doesn't haunt you for weeks after you finish the last sentence, then I don't know what to tell you but you've got a swinging rock where your heart ought to be. Coricomile has this ability to slowly remove every bit of hope from the room while you're not paying attention and I'm so here for it.

So... that's my top 5. I seem to have a taste for sad love songs instead of pop ballads, but I hope you enjoy them, if you haven't read them already :)

“Is it worth pointing out that you followed me?” Pete asks. Patrick makes a tiny noise of frustration. Pete holds his hand up, palm forward. “No, wait, you’ve caught me. I’m totally stalking you.”

He’s leaning against the balustrade at the front steps, phone in hand. He doesn’t look up from the screen, his thumb scrolling, tapping, like he’s far too busy to interrupt the expansion of his musical empire for things like social interaction.

“Three days ago, I barely knew you existed,” says a voice that sounds like Patrick’s, but braver. “It was a glorious time in my life and I’d like to go back to it. So if you could stop showing up, like, anywhere near me, that would be just super.”
