Villa owners in Dubai have been instructed to install a new type of smoke detector. Dubai Civil Defence has launched a campaign to urge people living in old villas to install the new smoke detectors which can help to save lives from smoke inhalation if a fire starts while residents are sleeping. Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, Directorate General of Civil Defence, said smoke is the main reason for death during fires. General Al Matroushi said: “Smoke is the silent killer in fires as 70 per cent of people die due to suffocation while they are asleep. People always escape from the flames but they don’t know smoke is more danger.” He said new villas in Dubai already have smoke detectors installed but they are targeting the old villas for the smart detector. “The new detector has a very loud noise and can wake up anyone who is sleeping. It will help to save many lives,” added General Al Matroushi. The new system has detectors in all rooms and is linked with a Bluetooth system, so if one detector starts it alerts the others.
