For most women, dreamed of marrying and bearing children, but there was one expectation to every rule, and this is the retelling of the great woman who preferred to devote her life to the Great Goddess Athena. For she has no name, this woman studied various things to expand her knowledge of all that she could. Greedy in her knowledge and own theology, enchanted the God Apollon so, due to the sheer curiosity of the woman, he came down to Mount Olympus to see the young woman.
“You are aware I know you are there, right?” the woman spoke, rising from the ground she was tending to, which shocked the God who was surprised she was aware of his presence with her back to him.
He was disguised as a young man, and once the woman saw him she began interested in why such a noble looking man would visit her so.
“I heard of the unusual wise woman who lived up in this forest, so curiosity overtook me and I wished to meet her.”
“I assume I am that woman, since no other lives here. Come, sit with me and ask your questions unto me so that I may fulfill the yearning within your soul.” She sat down back onto the ground, continuing to tend to the garden of hers, and the God joined her. Apollon, with the knowledge that he carried, was curious about the young woman’s philosophy. “I do not carry the knowledge of the Gods, but with this short life of mine, I wish to search for knowledge to ease the yearning within my own soul. So let me help you, young man, in a way that I can.
“I may not be right, I may be wrong, but everyone is ever once in a while.”
Apollon, with even greater curiosity, asked of the woman, “Why do you not marry? A woman as fair as yourself would surely find a noble husband.”
The answer was simple for the young woman, “No man upon this earth, would love to have a wife who desires knowledge so greatly, he rather have a woman who desires children and will bear him a son. I, maybe a woman, and I may wish to have a child, yes, but my thirst for knowledge of the kosmos overcomes that.”
To the God, that made sense he could understand that his love for the arts were greater than anything he had ever felt before. The young woman grabbed his hand, gently around the wrist and pulling it close to her, where she brushed his fingertips with her own.
She smiled before saying, “You play the lyre, I can tell by your fingertips. You are a skilled player at that.”
He pulled his hand back in surprise, looking at his own in curiosity, finding nothing out of the ordinary upon the tips of his fingers. He looked at the young woman, who was giggling slightly, eyes widened in surprise. “How can you tell such a thing about a person by looking at this fingertips?”
“Simple,” the woman said, pulling up a weed, “the tips of your figures have calluses from the strings of the lyre, not anywhere else of your hand meaning not from any farming work. So you must play the lyre, and from the how deep they are you must have been playing for a long time.”
Apollon fell in love right there, he knew that Aphrodite must be upon Mount Olympus either grinning down upon him or celebrating for him. Apollon felt his heart move within his chest, “Perhaps one day I will play for you then.” The woman smiled, getting up and brushing the dirt off of her toga, offering her hand to help up the God, and he accepts. “Perhaps I will teach you one day to dance as well.”
The young woman blushed, “I have never had any interest in the arts, but any knowledge is good knowledge, I suppose.”
“I will return tomorrow, until then.”
Apollon left the young woman, who he had grown so fascinated with, until the dawn of the next day, where he had found her humming a soft hymn to herself as she read leaning against the laurel tree. He sat beside her, lyre in hand, playing along. Day by day, the God visited her before the sun rises and left before it was high in the sky.
Day by day, the God Apollon fell more and more in love with the woman, a fiery woman with free will shining brightly within her soul, but he was all too aware that no mortal life lasts forever, let alone as long as he would.
He took her hand one day, asking for a small dance, knowing her time would come too soon, “If you could live immortal like one of the Gods, would you do?” He knew the woman’s answer was bound to be unusual, for her mind worked in mysterious ways.
She frowned, muttering a small, “No, I would not, perhaps one day in one life I wish to, but not in this one. I am okay and accept being reborn in sorrowful cycle time and time again with open arms. For this is how us mortals learn, dear God of the arts, and I can sense your fear and love for me. Do not fret, I have known since we had first met.
“Do know your feelings, I do return, and I can sense my life coming to an end, but do not worry, for I promise you in the life I find my way back for you, I promise to be your wife. Then I will give up my mortality and remember you as I do now.” She wiped his tears away, “Do not cry, I will come back to you, no matter how many times it takes. I simply wish to see the world and view it from other perspectives. Please do understand.”
Apollon did not understand the young woman, that is what made him so drawn to her, to begin with, but when the dance came to a close he accepted her terms. When she passed, he closed his eyes in wait, he was not sorrowful, for he knew that one day, however long it takes, she will come back to him, with the knowledge she sought and welcome him with open arms for a dance once more.
