The Android launch of both of these apps is probably the point when it made the leap from being “something affluent people use” to “something everybody uses,” especially as in 2012 over half of smartphone users were on Android (compared to only 1/3 of the market using iOS). 

Also, due to social media having large network affects, being “something that everybody uses” means not only having a larger userbase, but having your existing users more engaged because they have a larger audience.

If you’re looking for the “big event in 2012,” Instagram and Snapchat being available to 90% of smartphone users instead of 33% of smartphone users seems like a pretty big deal.
