It was never supposed to be like this, Reigen thinks. He knows its wrong, he knows he can’t take it back, but when his disciple, his only friend, his companion, had asked him to be the best man. He would’ve said no, because i love you, because i want to be with you, i want you to know that all of those times you waited for me, i was a coward, I couldn't call you, and when you walked to those steps and into my office, i would’ve said no, because god, i felt i fell in love all over with you.
And I said yes, when you showed your ring, telling me that you were getting married. That you wanted me to be the best man,
I was a coward, he wanted to say.
Yet the only thing he could say was.
“Congratulations.” Reigen says, smiling. A service smile, a facade smile, a fake one.
Mob knows what that smile was, yet he accepted it with a grin. Like Reigen’s.
Would you be surprised, Reigen says. If i don’t come.
Not when the doctors told Reigen he had weeks to live.
He expected it, Reigen thought. Knowing fully well he had a lot to live, yet he said yes. Why didn’t he say no? He always says no to everyone, but it was mob.
His friend, his companion, his deshi.
He accepted it with grace, he went into the wedding with ease, yet he was weak. Weak in body, in mind, in heart.
To see his young pupil dance with another, giggling, laughing. Reigen was happy, yet sad. Broken, yet full. Aching, yet beating.
He did this to himself, slowly.
I love you dearly. Reigen softly says, in his deathbed, longingly looking at Mob. hands on his cheeks, god he loved those cheeks. Reigen pinches them, even if there were tears slowly dripping through his hand. It was okay, Reigen thinks. It felt like the rain was pouring through his hands.
those 'what ifs' in my head, still wanting to tell Mob everything. What Reigen felt, what I'm feeling, but I know those will never be back. because i drove him away from me, and i just want Mob to know that what i feel about loving him, while Reigen was losing him
Reigen becks, one last time.
“Maybe in another life, I did marry you, loved you badly, and grew old with you, because I know in this one we won't.”
Reigen didn’t see anything. There wasn’t much left to see anyways, not when all you want to is to kiss Mob.
He chuckled, one last time.
