Korean lesson of the day:

to be cold - 춥다

As many of you may now you switch from ~다 to ~워/워요 or ㅂ니다 when you use the word in your everyday usage or in general when a verb ends on ~ㅂ다.

So 춥다 gets conjugated to 추워 (informal) or 추워요 (normal formality) or 춥니다 (formal)

Just to remember you guys to keep this in mind when using the word.

Example sentences:

춥다.

It’s cold.

오늘 아침은 굉장히 춥다. -

It's extremely cold this morning.

밖에 추워지다! -

It’s getting cold outside!

나 추운데 담요 좀 가져다 주다? -

I’m cold, could you bring me a blanket?

When you are talking about your hobbies you have to change the verb form ~(하)다 to a noun, a way to do that is to take away the ~다 and replace it with ~기 which changes for instant ‘to travel’ - 여행하다 to ‘traveling’ - 여행하기

I like watching movies. - 난 영화보기가 좋아해. 

My hobbies are reading and painting. - 내 취미에는 독서와 그림 그리기가 포함된다.

Korean On The Internet : ~듯(이) and 뫄뫄/솨솨

~듯(이)/~는 듯이

The particle ~듯(이) is an advanced grammar point allowing us to make comparisons between its preceding and following clause. In that sense, it’s similar to ~는 것처럼 or ~는 것과 마찬가지로. ~는 듯이 (focus on the 는!) can be used to make speculations. ~듯이 and ~는 듯이 are very similar, which is why I’m grouping them together.

제가 영국에서 좋은 시간 보낼듯 제이씨도 우리나라에서 좋은 시간을 보내시길 바랍니다. Just like I had a great time in England, I hope that Jay also has a great time in Korea.

너도 알고 있듯이 외국어 공부에 꾸준한 노력이 필요한 거야. As you know, steady effort is necessary for the study of a foreign language.

This grammar principle never comes last… except on the Internet, where it serves as a shorter version of ~듯이 하다 or ~는 것 같다.

걔가 미친듯.. He seems crazy.

- 우리와 함께 술 마실래요?

- 저 오늘 안할듯

- Do you want to drink with us?

- I don’t think I will today.

It can be used this way in spoken Korean too, but they often add ~하다 at the end, which is the full particle.

~뫄뫄/솨솨 (and 따따님)

뫄뫄 is short for 무엇무엇, which can be translated by this and that, so and so. Both are actually used as replacement for “어떤 분” (some person) or “누군가” (someone). In that way you can build sentences like “A said to B she was pretty”, without naming anyone (뫄뫄님이 솨솨님한테 예쁜다고 했어요.) It can be used to say “he”, “she”, “this”, “that” and is only used on the Internet (very often though).

(Bonus: 따따님 comes from the Chinese 大大 and is used to mean 잘생님 (a pretty/handsome person.))

Similar/Different/Same

In English, we use words like “to” and “as” in comparison sentences, for example “”I’m the same as my friend” or “That building is similar to my house” 

In Korean use 과/와 or 랑/이랑 to have this meaning:

eg. 나는 친구랑 똑같아 - I’m the same as my friend

eg. 그 건물은 집과 비슷해 - That building is similar to my house

eg. 그 건물은 어제와 달라 - That building is different than yesterday

Notes:

1. 다르다 - Different, 비슷하다 - Similar, 똑같아 -  Exactly the same

2. All of these phrases are informal

-적/-적이다/-적으로

적 - Used when a noun is becoming a descriptive word for another noun, eg. “book bag” book is usually a noun, but it is being used to describe the type of bag. 

eg. 이것은 첵적 가방가 이야 - This is a book bag

적이다 - Turns the word into an adjective that can describe a noun. Gets conjugated the normal way an adjective is used to describe a noun.

eg. 이 학교는 역사적인 건물이야 - This school is a historical building

적으로 - Turns the word into an adverb, Usually translates the word to a word ending in ‘ly’ in English. (eg. 충동 - impulsive, 충동적으로 - impulsively 

eg. 나는 자주 옷을 충동적으로 사 - I often buy clothes impulsively

Notes:

1. 적 is only really used on its own when it is attached to a word that is usually a noun, but is being used to describe another noun. Like the example above “book bag” In most other cases  적이다 would be used, as  적이다 is much more common in spoken Korean.

2. All these phrases are informal
