Hakuouki Shinkai - Iba Hachiro Translations
October, Genji Gannen 1865
It has been 2 months since the Kinmon Incident happened, where Kyoto witnessed a fire set by the rebels
Summer has passed, and the weather has started to get colder
Yukimura Chizuru: Hm, I wonder whether this is fine..
I looked at my reflection at the mirror and tightened the knot on my hair
Yukimura Chizuru: This should be fine
It has been around 10 months ever since I’ve started staying at the headquarters
I’m more used to dressing up as a man as compared to when I first left Edo, but still..
Still, some people seem to be able to tell easily
Just like how I first met Okita-san, Saitou-san, and Harada-san
Also.. the same thing happened when I first met Iba-san
???: You shouldn’t do that, if girls get involved in these type of dangerous situations, you’ll definitely get hurt
I thought I did a good job in dressing up as a man, but…
I wonder whether it’s really that easy to see through my disguise
Once again, I looked at my reflection in the mirror
I can’t really do anything about my appearance right now
There also seems to be rumours about me being staying here in the Shinsengumi…
I wonder whether it’d be better to start acting more like a man
For example.. changing the way I speak, that shouldn’t be too much of a hassle
But I wonder how I can pull that off?
I focused at my reflection in the mirror and started speaking like a man
Yukimura Chizuru: I.. No that’s not right - Me? I look like a girl? Don’t joke around
Yukimura Chizuru: D-despite my appearance, I am a guy
I- I wonder, I thought that was pretty manly..
???: You shouldn’t force yourself, that type of crude language does not fit you at all
I suddenly heard a voice and when I turned around…
Yukimura Chizuru: Iba-san! Since when were you…
Iba Hachiro: I just arrived a moment ago, you have a funny side, don’t you?
He definitely saw what happened!
I was so embarrassed that I just wanted to disappear
Iba Hachiro: Hey, what’s wrong? You’re turning red. Did I say something odd?
Yukimura Chizuru: N-no, you didn’t say anything odd!
If anything was odd, it would definitely be me
Even so, it was a coincidence that Iba-san appeared just when I was thinking about him
I shook off my embarrassment and talked to him
Yukimura Chizuru: Um.. what brings you here today?
Yukimura Chizuru: Could it be that you’re looking for Hijikata-san? But he and Kondou-san are out at the moment…
Iba Hachiro: No, not at all, I’m not looking for Toshi-san, I wanted to have a word with you
Iba Hachiro: That’s right, I was in Edo the other day and I was trying to gather news about your father’s whereabouts
Yukimura Chizuru: Did you manage to find out anything about my father’s whereabouts?!
I asked in anticipation, Iba-san then tilted his head
Iba Hachiro: I visited the Yukimura Clinic and asked the people in the area but…
Iba Hachiro: I’m sorry to say, but I did not manage to get any information about your father’s whereabouts
Although I didn’t expect too much about father’s whereabouts, but upon hearing that…
I felt disappointed, and my chest started getting heavier
If he had not returned to Edo, that might mean that he is still in Kyoto
But.. if that was the case, the Shinsengumi would have found out about his whereabouts
The other day during the Kinmon incident, much of Kyoto was damaged
It might be that he got involved during the rebel…
There was a moment of silence, Iba-san then told me-
Iba Hachiro: It’s too early to be disappointed
Iba Hachiro: Actually, when I returned to Kyoto, I got hold of some rumours about somebody who resembles Koudo-san
Yukimura Chizuru: Really?!
Iba Hachiro: And.. I have a favour to ask from the members of the Shinsengumi
Just when Iba-san said that..
Inoue Genzaburo: Just when I thought I heard a familiar voice, isn’t that you? Iba-kun
Inoue Genzaburo: I heard from Toshi-san that you were stopping by Kyoto, it’s been a while since I’ve last seen you
Both of us turned to the direction of the corridor
Just when we turned over, Inoue-san was standing at the door
Iba Hachiro: Inoue-san, just in time, I have a favour to ask of you
Inoue Genzaburo: Oh, what is it? So long it’s some thing I can be of assistance to…
After that, I followed Iba-san out of the headquarters
I’ve rarely left the headquarters unless I’m accompanying somebody on patrol
It’s common for people to give us a horrified or askant look during patrol, but…
Right now, nobody is really looking at our direction, everybody’s minding their own business
It’s been a while since this has happened ever since I’ve arrived at Kyoto, it was quite an unspeakable feeling
Yukimura Chizuru: I wonder whether it was really alright for me to leave the headquarters….
I couldn’t help but feel nervous, I looked at Iba-san’s direction
Iba Hachiro: It’s alright, we’ve gotten Inoue-san’s approval to leave the headquarters
Iba Hachiro: He might be spying at us from a distance
Yukimura Chizuru: Is that so…
Inoue-san just gave us permission to leave the headquarters without giving much thought to it
Putting that aside, this is a rare chance for me to get information on father’s whereabouts
Yukimura Chizuru: By the way, Iba-san, what was it about the rumours you heard about my father?
Iba Hachiro: Huh? About that..
For some reason, Iba-san looked really uneasy
I wonder what’s wrong? Is it a rumour that he doesn’t really want to tell me?
Just when I thought so, he bowed apologetically
Iba Hachiro: I’m sorry, I’ll be frank about this…
Iba Hachiro: I didn’t hear any rumours pertaining to Koudo-san
I was stunned when he told me that
Yukimura Chizuru: If so, then…
He then looked at me and said-
Iba Hachiro: Just now, you looked like you were rally disappointed, so I couldn’t help myself…
Iba Hachiro: I thought that the least I could do was bring you outdoors and cheer you up
I didn’t know what to say in response, so I just remained where I was
I was glad that Iba-san was concerned about me
Yukimura Chizuru: Does that mean that you lied to Inoue-san?
He just smiled and told me this -
Iba Hachiro: You could put it that way, but he probably knew what I meant when I asked him that
Iba Hachiro: Although we did not say anything on the surface, but I think both of us were thinking about the same thing
Come to think about it… He might be right
Inoue-san has been very nice to me ever since I came to the headquarters
Maybe he was concerned about me, and he agreed to Iba-san’s favour because of that
Iba-san then looked at me and said -
Iba Hachiro: But I think Koudo-san is still alive
Iba Hachiro: Any factors would want a doctor skilled in Western medicine
He said it with such conviction, I started to feel relieved
I bowed slightly at Iba-san
Yukimura Chizuru: Thank you, I appreciate it, Iba-san
Yukimura Chizuru: But since we don’t have any information about my father’s whereabouts, I think I should go back to the headquarters
Just when I said that, he looked surprised
Iba Hachiro: Hold on, what do you mean by that?
Iba Hachiro: The whole reason I brought you out is to cheer you up
Iba Hachiro: Inoue-san gave you permission to leave because he felt the same way too, didn’t he?
Iba Hachiro: If you go back to the headquarters, don’t you think you’re stepping on both me and Inoue-san’s good intentions?
Iba-san does have a point…
Iba Hachiro: Right now, there’s not many Shinsengumi members around, it’s a rare opportunity, why don’t we do something or go somewhere that you’ll like?
Yukimura Chizuru: Something or somewhere I like?
Iba Hachiro: Yes, I heard from Inoue-san, ever since you’ve gotten here, you haven’t been around Kyoto?
Iba Hachiro: Anything’s fine, just tell me, where do you want to go?
Yukimura Chizuru: How about.. we go for a walk then?
Iba-san seemed startled at what I just said
Iba Hachiro: Just a walk? Is that alright with you?
Yukimura Chizuru: That’s right, that’s something I usually do when I accompany the patrol sessions..
Yukimura Chizuru: But I’ve never been able to freely walk on the streets of Kyoto
Upon hearing that, Iba-san smiled and nodded at me
Iba Hachiro: I see, let’s go then
Iba Hachiro: Even so, I thought you’d ask for something more, like a hairpin or something
Yukimura Chizuru: No, not really..
Iba-san looked up at the sky and said -
Iba Hachiro: I understand why you’re nervous and impatient
Iba Hachiro: But there’s nothing you can really do right now
Iba Hachiro: There’s a saying that you can fall ill easily by worrying, if you ever fall ill, I’m sure your father will be sad
I’ve been thinking about this ever since the first time I met him
Iba-san seems to speak with some form of conviction, even though he’s gentle with his words
He shows his concerns through his words
This feeling seems familiar.. the feeling of being cared for, I wonder whether this has happened before?
Iba Hachiro: Let’s go, shall we?
When we were walking in streets, I saw girls of my age passing by
These girls were dressed up in pretty kimonos and hair accessories, they looked dazzling
Iba Hachiro: There’s a saying that those in Kyoto spend lavishly on their appearance, and those in Osaka spend lavishly on their meals.. It seems the case here with the girls dressing up so nicely isn’t it
The girls in Kyoto seem quite different from those in Edo, the girls here seem to like wearing rouge on their lips
Iba Hachiro: You would look good in a kimono, it’s such a pity
I didn’t know what to do when he started complimenting me
Yukimura Chiziru: Don’t joke around..
Iba Hachiro: I’m not joking, I would love to see you in a pretty kimono one day
We walked along the streets of Kyoto as we talked about things
We eventually stopped at the tea house from the other day, Iba-san then stopped in his steps
Iba Hachiro: Ah, it’s the tea house from last time, since it’s such a rare chance, let’s go in?
Yukimura Chizuru: It’s alright, we didn’t come out to rest
Iba Hachiro: You’re quite solemn aren’t you, well, that’s a good thing about you
I wonder whether it’s because of his upbringing, Iba-san really has a straightforward personality
He seems to compliment me in such a straightforward manner, I didn’t know how to respond to him
Iba Hachiro: I’ll make sure to ask for permission to bring you out for tea the next time
Yukimura Chizuru: A-alright..
The next time? Does that mean that he’s thinking of another opportunity to bring me out?
Of course, I felt happy upon hearing what he said, but..
I wonder why Iba-san is so nice to me?
We returned once to the mains streets, Iba-san then told me-
Iba Hachiro: The desserts here are really delicious
Yukimura Chizuru: The desserts?
Iba Hachiro: Last time I tried a dessert called castella… it was really delicious
Iba Hachiro: It’s something made of eggs, it has a very nice texture and I would like to let you try that one day
I’ve never tried such a dessert like that
But seeing Iba-san speak happily like that, it somehow made me happy
Without realising, the sun starting setting into the West, it was dusk
Since summer is ending, the sun is starting to set a bit earlier day by day
It’ll turn dark very soon if we don’t head back
Yukimura Chizuru: Um, Iba-san.. I think it’s about time I head back to the headquarters
Iba Hachiro: You’re right.. it’s a bit sad having to see you leave
He said that in a regrettable tone, it made me feel bad
Yukimura Chizuru: …I’m sorry
Iba Hachiro: Ah, don’t say that, don’t look down, I don’t want to make you feel troubled
Iba Hachiro: It’s not as if today was the only chance for us to spend time together, I’ll ask you out again some time soon
Yukimura Chizuru: No.. I didn’t apologise because of that..
It seemed ill-mannered of me to put up such a gloomy face in front of his happy expression
Yukimura Chizuru: Judging from how you’ve been treating me.. you seem to have known me from before
Yukimura Chizuru: Even so.. I can’t seem to remember anything.. I’m really sorry about this
After I told him that, he looked at me with a sad smile
Iba Hachiro: I guess that can’t be helped, because at that time, you were only about 5 years old
Yukimura Chizuru: Huh? When I was.. about five?
It was such a long time ago, but he managed to recognise me from just a single look?
Iba-san nodded quietly, then he looked at me with nostalgia
When I was five years old.. that was around the time I first arrived at Edo
I was trying to trace my memories back then
Back then.. Who did I play with anybody back then?
I was trying my best to remember, and was asking myself questions of that sort
Iba-san then looked at me and asked me a question-
Iba Hachiro: Do you still remember the promise from that time?
Yukimura Chizuru: Huh? The promise?
???: You shouldn’t do that, if girls get involved in these type of dangerous situations, you’ll definitely get hurt
Yukimura Chizuru: Was it what you said the other time we met at the teahouse?
Yukimura Chizuru: About girls getting involved in dangerous situations…
Just when I said that, Iba-san looked slightly sad
But that sad expression swiftly turned into a gentle smile
Iba Hachiro: ..Yes, about that, make sure you be careful at all times
Judging from his reaction, I must have exchanged promises with Iba-san about something else..
But I can’t seem to remember anything…
Iba Hachiro: Shall we head back to the headquarters? I’ll walk you back
Yukimura Chizuru: Ah.. yes!
I still couldn’t remember anything from my childhood.. I felt bad for not being to remember anything
But even so, just walking next to Iba-san makes me feel calm
I wonder what kind of promise did we exchange last time?
And.. I wonder why I can’t seem to remember anything about him?
As I pondered upon those thoughts, Iba-san and I returned to the den of the wolves of the Miburo
