Pen and Ink Sketch - April 2017 #2, St Andrew Street A Grade II* Listed Building in Hertford, Hertfordshire GV II* House, now commercial, operating as The Women’s Society Boutique clothing shop. @thewomenssociety C17 comprehensively rebuilt early/mid C18, altuered and shopfront inserted late C19. Dark red brick, Flemish bond, with pale orange dressings. Old tiled roof concealed by parapet. Square red brick chimneystack on ridge right of centre.  PLAN: resembles a 3 cell lobby entry type. Main front has 7 bays, 2 narrow bays each side of a central 3 bay unit which breaks forward as do the pilasters at each end of the facade.  EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and basement. First floor has slightly recessed 8-pane sash windows beneath rubbed brick segmental arches with triple keystones at sides, and three 12-pane sash windows with quintuple keystones in central bays, spaced 2:3:2, with right centre a blank recess.  Second floor has squatter 8- and 12-pane sashes, under segmental arches without keystones, bays 1, 3, 5, 7 blank recesses. Elaborate brick cornice with dentils and moulded bands.  Ground floor has doorway at left, 8 fielded panelled door above 3 stone steps, recessed in panelled reveals with shallow segmental head. Doorcase with rusticated Tuscan Doric pilasters, entablature with moulded keyblock, triglyph frieze, deep cornice, 8-pane sash window to right of doorcase.  POINT OF INTEREST: The 5 right-hand bays reconstructed with shopfront in late C19, with 5 equal openings but out of alignment with bays above. Stylistic Print of Cawthorne, 51 St Andrews Street. Formerly antique showroom, now The Ruby- Our fantastic local indian restaurant. Late C16/early C17, front altered C18, with late C19 alterations, Restored 1980s (Architects Kirby Adair). Front elevation has 5 irregularly spaced flush set 16-pane sash windows with projecting architrave surrounds, 4 similar but taller windows on ground floor, with moulded wood band immediately above the heads making the original jettied first floor. @gilespshorter: North Road House A Grade II* Listed Building in Hertford, Hertfordshire. Villa. 1827-28, altered mid C19, and repaired 1915-16 after bomb damage. Architect Thomas Smith, for his own residence. Greek Revival style. HISTORICAL NOTE: Thomas Smith (1799-1875) practised in Hertford from the 1820s, and was also County Surveyor for Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Among his Hertford buildings is the County Hospital, North Road (qv). In the early C20, North Road House (formerly Paynters) was the home of Annie Swan, c1908-1935, social activist, who moved from Hampstead to Hertford with her husband, a doctor. During the first quarter of the century she was a prolific and popular author. In her autobiography (My Life, London, 1924, Ivor Nicholson) she left a vivid account of the bomb damage to the house in a Zeppelin raid on 13 October 1915, in which the east wing was demolished, the front door was blown out, and the dining room was stripped to lath and plaster (vide Chapter 14 and 15). Point if interest- Late C19 red granite fireplace with bolection mouldings installed mid 1950s reputedly from the sale preceding the demolition of Panshanger House, outside Hertford, in 1954. Cecil House A Grade II* Listed Building in Hertford, Hertfordshire House, now offices. Main house 1774-78 (built by William Hanscomb under licence from the Gascoyne Cecil, Earl of Salisbury's estates) Dark red-brown brick, Flemish bond, with orange-red dressings, sides and rear stuccoed. Old tiled double 'M' roof behind front parapet, with brick chimneys with projecting bands; old tile roof over rear outshut. Double-depth plan, four main rooms with central staircase-hall, with central service stair to right. Central 'Strawberry Hill gothick' doorcase and porch. Recessed 6 traceried panel door, upper 4 glazed, and traceried 4-light fanlight, recessed in matching traceried panelled reveals, flanked by flat pilasters, from which project tented open-gabled canopy roof. Principal rooms remodelled late C19, and 6-panel doors on ground floor have Art Nouveau brass fingerplates. Hall has late C18 panelled dado. Former kitchen extends into rear outshoot, and has brick-arched fireplace. This was a substantial town house, notable for its fashionable porch and doorcase. Its name indicates its Salisbury family connection. Bailey Hall A Grade II* Listed Building in Hertford, Hertfordshire House, subsequently school, now offices. Early C18, C19 extensions at right (east). HISTORICAL NOTE: Bailey (or Bayley) Hall was referred to as a manor house in 1621. The present house was built c1700 but may incorporate features such as the attic panelling from an earlier structure. In 1721 it was described as in the tenure of Edward Blackmore, Mayor of Hertford in 1713. By 1800 it was the residence of Henry Allingham, County Coroner and Under Sheriff, who sold it in 1845. The exterior remained largely unaltered apart from the removal of a large segmental pediment over the middle 3 bays. In 1900 the house was purchased for use by the Headmaster of Hertford School, and the eastern extension, and later, a classroom were built. The building is now used for County Council offices. Point of interest- Central doorway set above 3 Portland stone steps with C19 scrolled iron railing. Recessed 6 flush panelled door beneath sunburst traceried Adam-style fanlight, in fielded panel reveal. (This is a late C18 replacement door; the original is said to be now installed at No.25 West Street (qv)).
