how nat comforts you after a nightmare
nat had night terrors growing up
she’s also a light sleeper so she hears your heavy breaths before you even shoot upright
when she looks over she can see how wide your eyes are even in the low light of the dying fire, she sees your chest heaving
nat crawls over, moving before she even knows what she’s doing… she never got comforted after her nightmares
but she knew she had to try, try and say the things she never got to hear
“hey,” nat says to get your attention, she wants your focus to be on her instead of whatever was happening inside your brain
she places a soft hand on your knee, her hand trembling but she keeps it there anyway, she tries to stay steady for you
she doesn’t want to lie and say that they were safe because she didn’t know that for sure
sure they had survived the plane crash but anything could happen out here…
“im here,” is what she says instead, she doesn’t add anything else, she just wants you to feel her presence
nat tries to ground you as she rubs circles on your knee and repeats that she is there for you until your breath evens out
“thank you,” you whisper to her, she hears how exhausted you are “can you stay?”
nat simply nods, knowing she isn’t the best with words
she lays down next to you, she knows she wont be able to sleep til she knows you are
nat cautiously puts an arm around you, relieved when you don’t flinch but instead snuggle closer
that night next to you is the best sleep nat has gotten since they crashed
how lottie comforts you after a nightmare
when you jerk awake, sitting up before you even realize it, you see someone is already up
the cabin is quiet except for a soft hum, its rhythmic, almost like it’s seeping out of your dream
lottie is humming to herself, mindlessly drawing shapes into the dust on the cabin floor
you feel your heart stutter when her eyes meet yours, calm, knowing, and too awake for this hour
she tilts her head and crawls towards you
“did you have another nightmare?” she asks, her voice hushed
you nod before you can even ask yourself how she knows youve been having nightmares
she places her hand on your heart and takes a deep breath
something inside you makes you copy her
lotties touch is gentle but makes you feel odd, it leaves a warmth behind, like she knows something you dont
eventually with her help your breathing does even out
“its okay,” she whispers “it won’t hurt you,” her eyes stay on you for a moment longer, as if she is listening for something only she can hear
lottie pulls her hand away from your chest, that’s the last thing she says before crawling back to her spot
somehow you don’t feel afraid anymore, like your dreams will be safe for tonight
how shauna comforts you after a nightmare
shauna was already awake, sleeping had become a rare occurrence for her since the crash
she heard you tossing and turning for a while
eventually you pushed yourself upright, breath catching, nightmare and reality seeming to blend
shauna sits up too, immediately more alert
she grabs her blanket and stands up
she walks over to you and wraps the blanket around your shoulders.
she whispers small comforts of “it’s okay,” “we’re here,” “you’re safe,”
it almost feels like she’s whispering to herself as she hovers over you, watching your chest rise and fall
when you’re breathing evens out she crouches back down to your level, she lays you down and tucks you in snuggly with her blanket
shauna shushes you if you try to protest, she wasn’t going to use her blanket anyway
as you drift off, shauna stays by your side for the rest of the night, just in case
how travis comforts you after a nightmare
travis stares out the window, his mind not ready for bed
he takes a deep breath, trying to wind down when he hears you suddenly sit up
you immediately feel how fast your heart is going and how hard it is to breathe
he slowly approaches you, his hand out like he was getting closer to a wild animal
“hey,” he sits next to you, leaving a space between you and him “it was just a dream,” he clears his throat trying to not let his voice crack
when he notices how you are shaking he wordlessly takes off his jacket and hands it to you
when you put it on he offers a small smile, the jacket swallowing you up with warmth
“i get them too,” he mumbles when your breathing evens, it almost goes unheard
you look at him, he tries to look away but you catch a flicker of understanding before he does
“do you want me to stay?” he asks a bit awkwardly
when you nod travis scoots closer
his presence helps you drift off to sleep
how mari comforts you after a nightmare
mari slowly wakes up to you trashing beside her
your breathing is ragged and heavy
mari turns over to face you and shakes you a bit till your eyes flutter open
“jesus stop breathing like that you’re scaring me,” she tells you, her voice harsh like usual
when she notices how tears are welling up in your eyes she looks away, not having a clue what to do
mari hesitates, feeling her chest tightening
she throws her blanket over the both of you, scooting closer
“you’re freezing… idiot,” she mumbles
she’s careful not to say anything else, she can sense that her usual comments could be saved for the morning
then she could ask what the nightmare was about, maybe a giant squirrel eating you alive… but most likely the crash
she slowly inched her hand towards yours
mari intertwines her fingers with yours, give you a light squeeze, then she shifts around trying to get back to sleep
“don’t get used to this,” she whispers to you as you drift off
