It was funny how Kristoff had forgotten how much presence Adam had -- larger than life, really. There were very few things Kristoff could compare to the French royal, and most were not human. While he did not step back at the other male standing and walking around to the front of his desk, it did make the ice harvester tense.
He feared reaction, in all its complexity and simplicity. Heâd never done something like this before, not with these implications, and he was edging and inching along like he was walking on thin ice. Which, for all intents and purposes, Kristoff felt like he was. This felt dangerous and anxiety-inducing. Adam had no hold over him, but Kristoff felt tethered to the other -- not in a bad way, just in a way that was unfamiliar and made him fret over his own actions concerning this other person.
Caring for other people wasnât something he did very often, after all. In his life, people had not always been kind, and Kristoff had responded likewise when given a wrong turn.
But for those few he truly, fully cared about...
âI...Well, I mean, I will if you want me to...?â Kristoff replied slowly, his mind recognizing the hints of Adamâs soft teasing much slower due to the fact that he felt like a cornered rabbit here in this room, so close to someone he had wronged so dearly.
âYour fault?â Confused, incredulous. How did Adam find a way to blame himself for this, exactly?
The soft touch against his cheek completely blew out any arguments Kristoff had been about to spout off, the harvester biting down on his tongue to cease any foolish words or pathetic noises.
Instead, after recovering a little bit of his pride, Kristoff let out a low laugh. âYou know, writing wouldn't have done you any good either. Even if I had a residence for you to send it to, I wouldnât be able to read a word of whatever you put down to paper,â he breathed out, finally looking Adam in the eye.
He would always come back for the ones he cared for.
