Synopsis: You wish things could stay this way forever: you, your Infinite boys - both Sungkyu as your brother figure and Hoya your unrequited love. But love is greedy. And between the man you have always loved and the man who has always loved you, who will your heart belong to?
As the concert day draws closer, the intervals of berating yourself for being a coward become more and more frequent as you remain (miraculously) obstinate in not attending. Even the shrill goading of your Infinite-fanatic roommates (who remain oblivious to your intimate history with the boys) cannot sway you from your firm resolution as you keep them at bay with every possible carefully crafted excuse. So finally, with a supportive smile disinfected from any residual envy, you send them off to the concert, waving mechanically until the door shuts close in your face.
Alone, you overturn each clock in your apartment, unable to confront the painful remainder of each passing hour. When the urge becomes too great, you flee the confines of the room to the local park, swinging back and forth, back forth and back senselessly. When the sun sets, you shut yourself in the room, the blinds drawn like boards, trying hard not to consciously think of how the concert must be starting by now.
You are tucked safely in bed well before the night deepens, thinking it best if only for tonight to avoid your roommates’ no-doubt happy account of the concert. You lie there, curled as if fending off the world, unable able to fend off your own thoughts. Tomorrow, you’ll face your problems head on. Tomorrow, you’ll be yourself again. But for tonight, let me have this one moment of weakness.
And when you hear the hushed murmurs of your roommates returning, you whisper nothing but gentle praises to yourself for properly having moved on, for not shedding on single tear, for murdering the gaping hole of regret deep inside you.
It’s well past midnight as the lights of the complex dim one by one. Sleep does not come easily as you lay terribly awake, thinking both of all thoughts and none at all. You are battling with merciless insomnia when a slight vibration startles you. Fumbling in the dark, you search for your cell phone, elusively hidden somewhere between your covers.
When you finally discover the gadget, the phone continues to ring and a number you don’t recognize flashes across the display, screaming to be noticed, urgently vying for your attention. Tilting your head slightly in uncertainty, you cautiously swipe across the screen to answer and bring the phone to your ear.
“Hello?” But you are met with eerie silence.
“Hello?” you repeat again, this time slightly more emphatically, pausing afterwards to listen for any response. When still only quietness replies, you are a hair breadth’s moment from hanging up in annoyance when –
“Wait,” a desperate, but distinct voice that sends trembles down your spine stops you dead cold, and you can scarcely remember to breath. “Don’t hang up.”
It numbly occurs you have no intention of doing so, but the thought doesn’t coherently form into words as you remain hushed, at a loss for words from the heart-shattering shock that begins to seep through every coursing vein.
“…are you still there?” the man’s voice ascertains your presence, a voice you know but don’t dare place in fear of the consequences.
“Yes,” you meekly answer, thankful your voice doesn’t crack in disloyalty. “I’m here.” You hear a heavy sigh of relief on the other side of the line.
“…it’s me, Hoya,” he confirms the unmistakable identity and you think to yourself with a dash of sadness ‘yes, yes I know.’ Unconsciously, you bring the phone closer, tightly wrapping an arm around drawn knees as if trying to protect yourself – and from whom are you really trying to protect yourself? – closing your eyes to better focus on the voice across the call and hoping he doesn’t hear the uncontrollable, racing beat of your heart.
So instead you say, “How did you get this phone number?” Though the tone is neutral and impartial, your words can be unintentional misconstrued to be interpreted as distaste, though you sternly remind yourself you could not care less for his impressions because what is he to you?
“Ah, Sungkyu-hyung gave it to me,” Hoya explains, almost guiltily in a way that makes you wonder if he regrets calling. “He said it was time we forgave each other.” There is a small part of you slightly angry at your supposed confidant for he had no right to do so without your consent. But you are too fond of Infinite’s leader, who you begrudgingly acknowledge is only thinking, and has always thought, of your and a beloved member’s best interests at heart, to hold a grudge. And there is another small part of you relieved to hear Sungkyu’s and Hoya’s relationship has been mended, even with the damage you had so disastrously created.
“I see, that’s good,” you comment non-committal. Your every word is careful, calculated, and you know it doesn’t go unnoticed by Hoya who is obviously trying his absolute hardest to keep the dialogue alive despite your equally formidable efforts not to allow any opportunities. For you, this is the ultimate test. Emails you could dodge, ignore until time’s end, but this, this trial you have to face head on in order to move on because it will prove I don’t care anymore.
“… you sound well,” he says and you bit your lips hard, feeling your heart flicker like a wavering flame against the howling storm that is the betrayal of your own feelings. “I’m glad.”
You hate the gentle concern in his speech, the tender care that seems all too genuine. You hate the unwritten implications of something more, something of dreams, something unattainable. You hate more how you almost believe them to be true. And so you swallow any traces of hope and desensitize yourself to foolish expectations.
Feeling obligated to be in the very least cordial, you respond, “You too. Congratulations on the award for your movie. You deserved it.”
“Thanks,” says Hoya considerably lighter with audible elation, sounding much more like the Hoya you remember. “I’m just happy you watched it. I was hoping you would.” You don’t know what to say to this; you haven’t given any indication you watched the movie (although you have, not that you will openly admit it). However, you feel slightly ashamed hearing his apparent delight at your aloof praise, despite not knowing how truly heartfelt you meant it, so you don’t contradict him, conceding as an act of graciousness.
Another awkward pause. This time you speak. “How was the concert?”
Thankfully, Hoya, whether intentionally or unintentionally, does not ask as to why you did not attend; yet, in a sense, the lack of inquiry is dismaying but you stop yourself from wondering. Instead, he launches into the details of the production, reporting every minute specific about each performance. You hang onto every word, imagining as if you were there with the Infinite boys, cheering from backstage like the past.
And then you stop, and realize. What’s this? You don’t want the conversation to end but it also makes you feel ticklish. You don’t think you’ve ever listened to attentively to his voice before. It makes you feel like you could talk to him forever, and it wasn’t so long ago when you once could.
When he finishes his account, there is not much left to say. Still, neither of you wants to hang up for some reason. Well that wouldn’t be completely correct; you know.
There is a long lull of silence before Hoya speaks again.
“…I want to see you,” he whispers with a yearning so raw, so despairing, you can hear the fragments of his soul breaking. You’re already in soundless tears as he repeats the confession with a wry laughter at his own ridiculous self. “Hell, I want to see you.”
And you can’t pretend any more. You can’t pretend you don’t remember every memorized rhythm of his habits, the gentle timbre of his voice, the subtle gestures of his calloused hands, and each expression of his face, so when you’re asleep and dreaming of a world in which you’re together again, it almost seems real.
And you can’t pretend your soul doesn’t fracture each morning when you wake up and realize it isn’t. Because you do. Because you remember them so vividly like a specter of chilling memory where his lips were on yours and a time where you could love him limitedlessly, endlessly, eternally.
Just like how you can’t pretend there isn’t a photo, a photo no matter how many times you’ve tried to throw away, pocketed in an envelope stuffed in the back of a desk drawer, creased on every edge from all the handling wear.
And the one single wish you’ve locked in that tiny box deep inside your heart is to see once more, if only just once more, his face.
“Let’s meet.”

I just became an Infinite fan today, and I happened to stumble upon TCotB. Being an angst enthusiast, I haven't read an angst fic that has given me such a heart-wrenching feeling for months now (I thought my heart's become numb lol), but somehow I can't help but feel like my chest is getting beat up continuously by your writing. Your style is absolutely marvelous, and I happily take each word in like my favorite chocolate. Keep up the great work, I'll always be rooting for you!
Welcome to the Inspirit fandom, my dear (best one ever *cough cough*) ^^ Thank you for stumbling upon my humble series and now that I’m back, I hope you’re find your heart beating with every last chapter of my baby “Take Care of the Beginning”~~~~ <3 <3 <3 yay~~~~

Thank you~~~!! I’m so glad you found fanfiction through my series! I try really hard to make it like a real story you would pick up in a bookstore and fall in love with the characters (that happen to be real people ^^)
haha find me a producer and I’d definitely make this into a drama~~~ :3 Updates coming soon now that I’m back so please look forward to them!!

My darling~~ You have no idea how much this means to me. Update will be tomorrow so please just wait another day. Definitely missed you~~~
ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ I LOVE SUNGKYUUUUUUU!!!ㅠㅠㅠㅠ Perfect leader, perfect friend, perfect man--perfect. I think I cry in every chapter he's in. Like seriously cry. I love Hoya too but, man, Sungkyu has me feeling all kinds of stuff. I'm excited to read his side of the story!
The epilogue will be in Sungkyu’s side of the story (which is really rare) but it’ll be a nice little close out for the perfect man ^^
I really liked chapters 24 & 25, I really love how Howon relized about his feeling for her and at the same time I feel sad for him. I can imagine an awkward reunion(?) and SUPER awkward one. I'm looking forward to the next chapters ^^

Synopsis: You wish things could stay this way forever: you, your Infinite boys - both Sungkyu as your brother figure and Hoya your unrequited love. But love is greedy. And between the man you have always loved and the man who has always loved you, who will your heart belong to?
In the practice studio, Infinite’s leader observes a certain member with a watchful eye. Isolated amidst the chaotic preparations, he surveys sadly the main dancer – he watches him sit, check his phone, stand, pace and stretch several times, before then sitting again and repeating endlessly the pattern all over again in the course of a few minutes.
Ever since they landed in America, Hoya being tense would be a vast understatement. Though he has tried to hide the anxiety, his efforts have been to no avail as the signs are plainly evident. Any of the staff and members can see how on edge he is, an unnatural state for the usually collected entertainer as his performances ever slightly are amiss, lacking the trademark spark and fire. For the members, the reason isn’t hard to guess.
“He’s gone back to being like that since we found out America was on our tour schedule,” Woohyun remarks, joining the observation, and Sungkyu hums offhandedly in response, his regard still fixated in complex pity on the restless Infinite dancer. A few months after her leave, Hoya seemed to come to terms with it all, on the surface regaining his bearings until a few weeks ago when the world tour locations were released. Since then, to those who knew Hoya well, the regression was crippling.
“How was she?” Woohyun asks privately. Apart from the two, none of the other members are aware of the meeting, Woohyun only privy to the knowledge being Sungkyu’s sole confidant.
Sungkyu’s first thought is to reply with “the same,” but he remembers the maturity she has acquired, like a ripe blossom weathered through the harsh winter and how unequivocally, objectively, unromantically beautiful the flower he has always seen potential in, has become to others. “Happy,” he instead answers.
Woohyun looks expectantly at Sungkyu, who immediately translates the directed gaze with a heavy sigh. “But she still refuses to see him, that stubborn girl.”
“… I wonder if it’s always going to be this way…” Woohyun dejectedly states. At this sobering utterance, Sungkyu sours, thoughts stirred by the mere possibility as he fidgets with a small piece of paper in his pocket. Was this the way he would watch two people he cared about live their lives?
And he can’t stand to view this frustrating drama unfold before him any longer. Searing with determination, Sungkyu marches hurriedly over to his target, resolute on one goal long over-due.
“Here,” Sungkyu outstretches his hand with misleading nonchalance and between his fingers is a fragment of folded paper. The younger member is physically startled and hurriedly takes out headphones to shift his undivided attention to his leader.
“What is it?” Hoya asks, brow knitting in confusion as he accepts the scrap cautiously, opening it to see a few numbers written in barely legible handwriting.
“Her phone number,” and Hoya’s heart stops in that moment and he can’t feign ignorance. Sungkyu doesn’t need to explain whose number it because unspoken, it is understood.
“…why are you giving this to me?” The hoarse tremble of Hoya’s voice betrays his intentions to appear calm, and the older of the two smiles wryly at his friend’s nervousness.
Sungkyu thinks of the unspoken, drawn-out tension between Hoya and himself, how they have never been able to breach the subject to maintain the internal and external peace. He thinks of how they don’t speak of her, their friendship carefully rebuilt as long as the red tape around a single female isn’t breached, but the taboo topic always staring blaringly before them as they feign blindness.
He thinks of his pride, his own wounded confidence stills his heart from bridging the rifts of people he cares for, even when his mind wills otherwise. He thinks how he purposefully refrains from meddling between two people who he thinks the world of, two people who are trying so hard not to be in love, respectful of their feelings as an objective bystander because it’s not his place to interfere, having learned full well of what intervening can do to the fragility of emotions.
He thinks of Hoya’s willfulness, the way he buries his feelings with both hands covering ears and eyes shut to the youthful world, trying hard not to accept the voice in his heart that cries out so desperate to be heard. He thinks of the Hoya who scrubs each day away at a realization scorched across his chest that cannot be erased, at the sacrifice of his own pain because he honestly believes she, they will be happier this way.
He thinks of her bleeding heart, the one she wears on her sleeve like a rusted badge from all the wear and tear but covering the chinks with a radiant smile. He thinks of her voice trembling over the phone, ever so slightly betraying the words she tells him that she’s fine to reassure him, and how he tells her he believes him because he somehow can’t say anything else.
And more than ever before, Sungkyu thinks to himself how fondly stupid the trio of them have been all this time – for being considerate of another at the cost of each of their own happiness.
“Because we’ve all been stupid,” Sungkyu slightly smirks with half-hearted cynicism. At first, Hoya simply blinks blankly at his senior’s lightheartedness in the situation, but as the short, but profound comment begins to sink, Hoya lets out a wrangled sigh, mixed between a chuckle and sob, in full comprehension.
No discussion of the past takes place. There are no apologies, no explanations, no addressing of the sequences of events that have brought them to this stage. But in a sense, for their friendship, this much is appropriate.
Sungkyu shifts away to leave his fellow member to his thoughts when Hoya calls out, “Wait, hyung,” and he pauses, turning back as his younger member hesitates timidly, never one to be sentimental. “… Thank you.”
To this, Sungkyu smirks triumphantly and saunters off with a noncommittal wave, leaving Hoya to stare at the inked digits, wondering what to do and realizing there was never any doubt.
Next chapter, will Hoya call?! 3 chapters, the countdown begins.

Synopsis: You wish things could stay this way forever: you, your Infinite boys - both Sungkyu as your brother figure and Hoya your unrequited love. But love is greedy. And between the man you have always loved and the man who has always loved you, who will your heart belong to?
1 Year Later
“It’s been a long time hasn't it?” a tenor voice says with an all too familiar wit. As if on cue, a coffee is set before you on the table, your favorite, of course, and you have no doubt in your mind who it is.
It’s been almost a year since you’ve left Korea but aside from a different hair color and cut, Sungkyu looks exactly the same, as if time hasn’t aged him from an eternal 27. You notice this enviously as you can’t say the weathers of the past year aren’t reflected in your appearance. Though during this past year you have been in constant contact with texts, calls, and video conferencing, there is no substitute for meeting in person. You’re fortunate Infinite has a concert stop on their world tour in your city, for this meeting to be even possible.
“Too long,” you say as you stand to hug him. In his friendly embrace, the musky cologne reminds you of so much. It reminds you of a time of carefree innocence and the nostalgia pours over you in floods.
“You look good,” Sungkyu comments as he pulls away. He says it without a trace of underlying meaning. “Happy.”
You want to tell him he looks as handsome as ever, but won’t give him the satisfaction of knowing. It’ll be your little secret. “You too,” you respond instead.
“You should come backstage and see all the members. They miss you and it’ll be a good surprise,” he suggests. With every lengthy phone call, the Infinite boys always comment “how it wasn’t the same without you,” a sentiment you all too painfully empathize. There hasn’t a day that has gone by in your new life where you don’t miss Dongwoo’s boundless energy, Woohyun’s greasy teases, Sungyeol’s childish ways, Myungsoo’s eternally boyishness, and Sungjong’s chic optimism. You long to see them too, but you’re scared. So instead you sidestep the idea by launching down walking down memory lane, recounting cherished moments and he allows you, even though you both know it’s a cheap rouse for deflection.
After a long while, when you both have exhausted all stories worth mentioning, he contemplates for a moment.
“Don’t you want to ask about him?” Sungkyu finally breaks the forbidden topic. You anticipate the question; it’s unavoidable.
You never proactively speak to the members, especially Sungkyu, of Hoya. You do not inquire about Infinite’s valued dancer, never questioning. The morsels of unprompted information you hear are when he is mentioned in passing conversation. There are times where you sense Sungkyu and Woohyun intentionally raise his name, but it’s become second instinct to briefly acknowledge the topic before brushing along as if uncaring.
From what you have gathered unwillingly, Hoya is doing well, his self-compositions well on their way to a solo as you have always expected and his acting career in full swing after winning laudable awards from his previous drama. It’s not as if you were expecting your rejection could possibly have had an impact on his life, you’re not quite that disillusioned, but it was painful fact to accept that the scales of emotions can be so uneven.
Focusing on stirring your coffee, you smile.
The first message you received from Hoya was a few short months after you left Korea. Not surprisingly, it was concise and to the point, simply asking how you were doing. It was unexpected to say the least, but it sent you back to state of yourself you loathed unforgiving so you didn’t respond. Later, there were several similar messages, all of which were unanswered. After then, they stopped altogether, while all the past ones sit saved and read in your inbox to this day as a testament of something you don’t even understand.
“I would be lying when I say I don’t want to,” you admit. “But I don’t think it’s the right time. I don’t think we’re ready to see each other.” You use the word “we,” but in reality, it is really just “you,” telling sweet lies that savors strongly of bitterness afterwards.
“How long will you be in town?” you ask, redirecting the conversation.
“Only a few days.” Rationally, you didn’t expect them to stay forever, but to hear it confirmed already makes you forlorn. Sungkyu all too easily reads the loneliness painted clearly all over your facial expression.
“Come,” he insists again, tempting the idea again yet still it’s not enough.
“…I’ll think about it,” you compromise. Sensing it is as generous of terms as he can negotiate, Sungkyu drops the subject and doesn’t mention it again. And as the dialogue continues smoothly again, you hope Sungkyu can find it in his heart to forgive this white lie.
It’s the return of Sungkyu! Next chapter, Hoya and Sungkyu brotherly moment. Only 4 chapters now 0.0 Oh my goodness...!
Aww, I feel so bad for Hoya. He didn't understand his feelings, or rather didn't want to give in to them in fear of ruining their friendship, which led to her departure and his unspoken confession. I'm just...gosh... Keep up the work and I hope you're doing fine~
Thank you thank you~~ I always envisioned Hoya in love based on his personality and his mentality as being blind to it and then having been so long focused on being a celebrity and his dance/singing/etc (as he said it himself), he doesn’t know what to do, which leads to being afraid of it once it does happen. Hope that I portrayed him accurately ^^
