Biomimicry in Music – Learning From the Adaptors of the Natural World
The history of culture is filled with mythologies that embed the belief that the highest forms of art and culture must come from humans and the craft of music amongst other forms is at its highest level in the development of and the in the work of Composers.
In this new field of Biomimicry modern cultures are remembering that we are not the first to make music or art, sing together, have hearing abilities that go beyond survival needs, organize rituals or communicate through sound.
Although many indigenous and ancient cultures learned directly, not just about the natural world but from the natural world, much of this was knowledge and connection was lost in the industrial and scientific revolutions - the sense that if a civilized idea was at the level of high culture and genius, if must come from us.
In this renewed field of Biomimicry most often associated with architecture, design and technology – people are exploring and being inspired by the adaptors of the natural world and building new systems based on the question –
At the moment of creation, how would life design this and which plants, animals and systems can I learn from?
The Arts in many ways had never forgotten this, but have returned in a serious way to understanding how these sensory abilities of certain animals, plants and system are highly organized cultural forms that can influence every part of our human work, inspire and connect with the great designers , architects and creators in the natural world, which we experience as sensory experience and then organize as ritual.
This concert is designed as a direct connection to specific animal’s abilities, the genius of their adaptation to life and each piece will feature the ability of that plant, animal or ecosystem in the form of very human acoustic and electronic music and composed to be experienced together in out ecosystem in Second Life.
Each piece will be introduced and based on the sensory ability of a particular natural adaptor, The discovery of the elaborate sophisticated communication systems of trees and root systems, the Alligator songs to the Lyre Bird to Barn Owl’s ability to locate sound to Vines that respond to danger in sound , each of the sound/music works will follow the inspiration but translate and embrace how we are influenced by this and how we can incorporate it into our technological and human global urban lives.
The series of pieces will be performed live and streamed live combining acoustic and electronic compositions written, performed and electronically collaged by David Shea in the hybrid digital space of the Great Mother.
The sound sources will come from acoustic instruments, field recordings, electronic instruments, spoken word recordings, ensemble recordings of electro acoustic compositions mixed live and ambient soundscapes based on both the structure and sounds of these direct inspirations, narrated, composed and performed in this live concert.
