The amount of lesbians who know that they’re lesbians from a young age versus the amount of gay men who know that they’re gay from a young age shows a staggering difference in that most lesbians take way longer to realize that they’re gay.

Girls are told that dating men is supposed to be hard and essentially unfulfilling. That it’s normal to expend emotional and sexual labor without receiving anything or feeling anything in return. Girls are told that their attraction to men and relationships with men should be difficult and sometimes feel forced because men are so emotionally lacking or otherwise “hypermasculine”.

Realizing that you don’t like men because you’re gay versus just feeling emotionally exhausted or unable/unsure of how to “please” men is part of the reason why compulsory heterosexuality is so damaging. It forces many girls to continue to date men and to keep trying to feel attraction to them long after they’ve realized that there’s nothing there—particularly blaming themselves for the reasons why relationships with men don’t work out instead of thinking it’s an indicator of being gay, which most (though of course not all) gay men are able to recognize as an initial indicator early on.

I think the thing that used to trip me up more than anything was how hypersexualized women are. It sounds ridiculous in hindsight, but as a teenager I genuinely believed that every single human being on the planet agreed that women are inherently more attractive than men. I thought like this because it was an easy way to rationalize why the world around me seemed so much more fixated on female bodies than it was with male bodies. I wasn’t old enough or educated enough yet to realize that the individuals and corporations around me were trying to cater to heterosexual men. So I just assumed that 100% of us had those kinds of fantasies about women, even if we were straight women ourselves (hah!). I was never challenged to examine my own feelings on the sexuality of women because so much of the media was proudly and openly obsessed with the sexuality of women.

i don’t mean to sound fake deep but the reason 2018 felt so long was because we’re being fed what’s trending at such a rapid rate that we literally can’t remember half of the shit that even happened anymore. “Black Panther came out in February!” Marvel releases so many movies a year that we completely forget about the last movie as soon as a new one comes out and it repeats in a vicious cycle. “Tide Pods/Ugandan Knuckles was in January!” The life span of memes have been rapidly declining for years and it’s gotten to the point where the average lifespan of a meme is about 2 weeks and then the next thing gets popular and then that lasts for 2 weeks and it just keeps going. We’re literally losing our sense of time because of our rapid consumption of media and pop culture.

Neurotypical people tend to not understand that my ability to focus on something I’m not particularly motivated to do will increase tenfold if I can have a secondary task or background distraction with which to pair it. So, for example, if I’m in a boring meeting or have to listen to a webinar or something, my ability to stay tuned in to what’s being said will actually improve greatly if I’m simultaneously allowed to play a game or colour. Likewise, if I have a boring work project that involves inputting data into spreadsheets or something of that nature, I absolutely need to be able to listen to a podcast whilst I work. People think these sorts of things are signs of not being invested, but for me, it’s the difference between engagement and zoning out.

I once reblogged a post about how a women’s bathroom was an important place of refuge, and that was why women often go to the bathroom in groups or to cry and why people leave those domestic abuse cards in women’s bathrooms, and how it’s the one place women can be away from men, and I was like “this is a fantastic post, yes” and then I found out the OP was a TERF and that post was suddenly no longer about safety in women’s restrooms. It was actually about wanting to make it impossible for trans women to pee in a public restroom. It was about making trans women seem like they invade a sacred place and make it dangerous.
