THE EMBARRASSEDREPLY TO his words amused him more than it perhaps should, but that was onlybecause of the confusion he saw across the other’s features. Angelo supposed heshould mind his tongue more, although he oftentimes saw no reason to. He statedthings as he saw them, and Corteo’s soulhad a rather beautiful color. The kind that he would most definitely hadenjoyed devouring if he was like his brethren. However, Angelo had manners and thought sampling somethingdelicious was far better than just shoving the whole thing in your mouth.Besides, leaving a string of mummified bodies certainly wasn’t attractive andwould gain unwanted attention from those that would hope to eliminate his presence.
❝Mm,sorry about that. Was just statin’ things as I saw ‘em, and you are quite niceto look at.❞Not a total lie. Corteo was not beautiful in the conventional sense, althoughhe certainly held a certain kind of charm about him that Angelo foundinteresting enough to pursue. When the other male’s face turned a bright red,the demon found himself almost smirking, though he managed to keep himselffairly controlled as he watched and waited for an answer to his coffeequestion. ❝You’reright. I’m not definitely askin’ you out, so there’s no tryin’ to be had.❞ He grinned then, confident and proud. ❝Name’s Angelo. Yours?❞ He didn’t even bother to address theother’s stuttered uncertainties because he was very sure they would agree.
Who would refusehim, after all? Angelo hadn’t facedthat kind of rejection in quite some time, and he doubted this rather timidyoung man would. All Angelo had to do was tug at his heartstrings and he’d fallright into the palm of his hands without any kind of struggle. ❝I promise it won’t take too long. I knowyou probably got things to do. I’m sorry if it seems like too much. It’sjust—you’re so attractive and all. I-I’m sorry I’m so bad at things. Ishouldn’t have said anythin’.❞He purposely acted sheepish, hand lifting to rub the back of his neck as he ‘shyly’looked away.
The flattery went over his head once Corteo heard the stutter in Angelo’s voice, an apology knew all too well from having to express his own countless times in one day. He could understand how it felt to be nervous when talking to a stranger, especially when the other man was asking him to go out for something as simple as a cup of coffee. Part of him wanted to accept out of sympathy, mainly to be polite rather than reject Angelo’s kindness, yet his mind was already wandering back to his empty apartment and its solitude. Shaking his head, Corteo offered a gentle smile, trying to comfort him as best as he could. “It’s fine, really. I guess, maybe you kinda took me by surprise,” he admitted, averting his gaze to the ground, “People don’t say things like that ‘bout someone like me.”
Not that Corteo thought himself ugly or anything, but he knew he wasn’t drop dead gorgeous or deserving of praise from a stranger. It made him somewhat suspicious of Angelo’s intentions, wondering if there was an ulterior motive, yet an invitation of coffee was relatively harmless. It wasn’t as if he was being dragged away to some secluded area or something like that. He might have to reconsider if that were the case.
“You’re makin’ it a little hard to say no when you're bein’ so nice.” His face burned with embarrassment, nervously pushing up his glasses to busy his hands. “I-I… I really should be headin’ home, but…” Pausing, Corteo tried to weigh the possibility of his answer, hesitating on ‘yes’ when another part of him wanted to say ‘no.’ It would probably be only an one-time thing anyway. A cup of coffee, conversation, and then they would be on their way. It wasn’t really… that big of a deal. “I think I’d like that though.”
