short thoughts watching The Prom on Netflix
spoilers warning
i’m on mobile and idk how to do the read more
i love the musical, and i’ve got some issues with the film. james corden as barry being one of them*, but there are enough articles on that - i’ll save it. but i’m looking at the film on its own, and on a whole, i genuinely enjoyed it!
these are my main emotions and all about the last bit because i only just thought of doing this.
Jo Ellen Pellman is so good, and i 100% expect to see her blow up as an actress. Also, Ariana DeBose is so incredibly talented, I adore her, and the way she can play a convincing teenager is some form of magic honestly. genuinely just amazing. both of them.
Zazz - all i can think about is how much i miss live musical theatre. love it
Love Thy Neighbor - one of my favourite musical songs ever in general, Rannells is a beautiful, brilliant man and just made me emotionally implode. king.
Unruly Heart - the visuals for this broke me. holy shit. i’m sobbing. the flood of emotion for how i was before (and during) coming out. everything i needed from this song.
the coming out scene - another heartbreak. damn this film has such a good cast. (again, not going into the corden issue)
and meryl streep is such an amazing actress???? she completely fills and embodies every role she plays and i just —
*i think james corden did a pretty good job as an actor, but, as an actor, should have done better.
final thought:
i needed this film so badly when i was a kid. i’m so happy it’s here now. regardless of my issues with it, it made me cry and i loved it.
