An Eco-Adventure of Unspoiled Nature in Dominica
In my wildest dreams did I never expect to be fortunate to visit The Commonwealth of Dominica along Eastern Caribbean Archipelago? Two thirds of this paradise is covered by tropical forest and the rest magnificent lakes, streams, rivers and waterfalls abound. Known as the whale watching capital of the Caribbean and home to the world’s largest endangered turtle it is a nature’s lover’s paradise.
Never before had I experienced eco accommodation in nature with the cottages resembling secluded tree houses, which is complete with out-door, open-air showers. It is called the Jungle Bay Resort and was built and operating in alignment with International Ecotourism and Geotourism. The focus is providing nature-based activities that only conforms to those guidelines.
The treehouses are perched amongst Galba, Gomier, and Cedar trees with spring fed streams cascading along the valley with stone staircases leading the way for us to explore tropical plant life. The inside of the little houses are surprisingly spacious and all furnishing inside is wood which is hand crafted there on the resort premises.
The accommodation and surrounding alone was an experience of a lifetime, but I saw hundreds of new plant species, vegetables, and fruit trees. The spectacular Victoria Falls and Perdu Temps hike was two unbelievable highlights, however that was until I discovered the rich marine life with the best snorkeling and diving I had ever experienced.
The people on the island are also the friendliest people in the whole world, and I am sure this must be whom they refer to when people to talk about smiling people with the largest permanent grins.
The rich volcanic soil make it ideal conditions for all sorts of natural foods including coconut, avocado, citrus fruits, breadfruit, plantain, bananas, mangoes. Game from the forests with rivers offering an abundance of crustaceans, fish, and from the sea crayfish, crab, Titira Ackra freshly caught each day, cooked and served into a scrumptious meal.
This is something a nature lover should have on his or her bucket list. A trip to Dominica.
