hey does anyone have any tips on how to hold yarn and crochet with joint problems? i have issues with my finger joints and holding yarn makes them sore and lock up. i really like crocheting but i can only do so much at a time without a lot of pain, esp with smaller yarn/thread

Honestly for me it's just a matter of holding it loose, not tensing my fingers as much as I can help it, and taking frequent breaks. I know that probably isn't helpful, but it's all I've found that works for me!
