1. What’s an important lesson your muse has learned over the past few years and how has that changed the way they live?

Sohyun learned that sometimes justice doesn’t win, sometimes power does. It was a quite tough truth to learn at such a young age. It caused a trauma in her; what was once a rather brave and outgoing girl, standing up for others whenever, she now keeps herself quiet in a corner, not meddling into other’s lives. Not only that but she learned ever since she was very small that sometimes biological parents aren’t necessarily the synonym of love. She found love to be in the ones that weren’t her family but rather strangers that became a substitute family to her. It changed her view of people and society in general.

14. Do they take control or give control or do they believe in sharing power? What are their thoughts on control versus submission (either sexually or in relationships in general)? What do they think of authority?

Sohyun believes in sharing power when it comes to relationships in general though when it comes to herself and her life, she would prefer to have control, though that normally doesn’t happen. Sexually, however, she is somewhat of a submissive.

5. Does your muse have any irrational fears that hold them back in life? Do they come from experience (trauma) or is it, for instance, part of a belief system they have?

Sohyun has a quite serious irrational fear that she refuses to let people know about. She has a trauma with water due to having attempted suicide by drowning, jumping off a bridge near her high school in her hometown. Apart from that, she is also quite scared of darkness, having been locked in a classroom during the entire night by her bullying classmates. Ever since, she has been terrified of spending a night alone in the darkness. When the lights go out, it’s evident she is affected by it, even when she is with someone else.

17. What prominent habits does your muse have and how would they respond if they were forced to change them? Are they adaptable or dependent on their routines?

She is dependent on drinking a cup of tea first thing in the morning, as much as others would be dependent on coffee. Sohyun also can’t go a day without writing for it’s the only way she can express her feelings that she normally suppresses. Apart from that, she is quite adaptable and secretly wishes for a break of her daily routine, an adventure, being a dreamer as she is, much like most writers.

There was something about the brunette– her chastity, her polite demeanor, her smile– that emanated a strong feeling of ardor from Chang-min. His gaze balanced itself between So-hyun’s eyes and lips, often attuned to the latter as she spoke. When her hand recedes, his diverts; Chang-min grazes the tuft of hair tucked behind her ear with his thumb and forefinger, slowly descending the strand whilst curling a finger about it. His smile wanes while concentrated, pursing lips while hesitating a reply, albeit Chang-min doesn’t mind the silence between them. ❝ I hope you don’t mind French. ❞

“French, huh?” So-hyun’s lips curled upwards into a sweeter, slightly mysterious smile, as if there were thoughts on her mind that drew curiosity into her being, perhaps even fascination. It was hard to tell. No one could really read her gaze. “C’est à partir de toi que j’ai dit oui au monde.” The words dripped from her lips like honey but she felt slightly embarrassed about it afterwards, gaze drifting away from his for only a second too long. The warmth emanating from his thumb and forefinger, descending a strand of her hair, brought her eyes to look at him yet again. “Paul Éluard. That’s pretty much the extent of my french...”

“The ocean is so deep and vast, just like outer space, though. It’s a far-fetched notion, yes, but I’m of the belief that anything is possible.” She nodded. Maybe it was the child in her that wanted to hold out hope. In her head, mermaids were not the creatures of fantasy spoken of in fairy tales. They were the representation of there being something more out there. Something mysterious and maybe even frightening. The unknown was of great interest to the idol.  “If they did exist, I wouldn’t blame them for being so secretive and cautious. Humanity has proven to take too kindly to things that are different.” 

“Well... I can’t really say for sure that they don’t exist.” As a writer, Sohyun had this notion that anything could be real as long as it was imaginable. If not for anything else, at least for the fact that if one would write it, it would come to life. But when it came to mermaids, the brunette was always extremely reluctant. She had no way to prove whether they existed or not though, she couldn’t step foot in water if not in her shower.

“That’s quite true. Humanity is anything but kind. Not only for any sort of unknown creature but especially for humans. It seems as we don’t like each other, seeing as we don’t treat each other kindly at all.”

SOMETIMES THE BEST PLACE TO sit in the quiet, to listen to music, to read, to sketch, is the library. Junseo used to frequent the one on the Yonsei campus when he attended the school, however, since he dropped out a year or two ago, he had his privileges revoked. Well, to be clear, part of that revoking of privileges was due to the fact that he was caught snogging a Teacher’s Assistant in the girl’s restroom. So that campus library was out of question. Thankfully for him, his co-worker still attended Korea University and allowed Junseo to roam that library in search of peace and a silent nook to draw. So that’s what he did. 

Sure, Junseo’s co-worker asked why the library and not the coffee shop or the book store or sit at home. Junseo simply replied that there was way too many distractions —- because there were. His neighbors were renovating their kitchen or bathroom (he couldn’t honestly remember which, just the throbbing of his head the morning after was enough) and his favorite book store removed the seating area. The library was enough. There were a selection of tables and art books to gain inspiration from. There was a courtyard filled with greenery. No coffee cups. It was absolutely perfect. 

Upon entering the library, Junseo’s co-worker wished him well and headed toward the classes, while he stood in the middle of the foyer, a large sketchpad in hand and a pen behind his ear. Now where to, he smiled.

even though summer started, it didn’t mean sohyun’s love for books would cease and her routine would suddenly not contemplate hours and hours of wandering around the library searching for new books, reading something interesting or sitting at a table in a corner and writing to her heart’s content. she wasn’t the type of girl to go out to the beach or hang out with friends that often when that season would start. in fact, it seemed as if nothing had changed since the semester had ended. all remained the same, except for the lack of classes and exams.

but she didn’t mind. she was happy that way, roaming the library for new books that would capture her mind and her heart. a day that she’d find that perfect book that she’d fall in love with was certainly a good day. and that sunny summer day that she entered the library yet again, notebook pressed against her chest with the pencil tucked between the pages, was (she assumed) going to be a good day. she had a gut feeling.

she noticed a man with a large sketchpad and a smile on his face when she entered the foyer and something drew her to take a second glance at him. it seemed as if he was wondering where to go to, a look that she often found in people that would rarely enter the library. sohyun, however, had this look on her eyes of complete comfort as if she was an employee there. perhaps it was that confidence in her comfort that drew her to turn back and take a step closer to the male, a somewhat shy smile on her lips.

“i’m sorry for disturbing you but... do you need any help getting around?”

Chang-min perched himself on the counter, adjacent to the register before the brunette who admired the quoted passage from the book in his possession. He witnessed her smile out of his peripheral and reciprocated with a smirk. ❝ Correct. ❞ He removes his thumb tucked inside the novel and abandons it as he does the kiosk, erecting himself to his feet with a stretch as the Woolf’s book fell to a close.

❝ You will. I made reservations, ❞ Chang-min admits on an exhale, amblingly relaxing his limbs while eyeing the manuscript beneath her hand. Curiosity drew him close, but playful intent made him stay; the twenty-something craned his neck to meet So-hyun’s gaze, assuring chaste intent with the curl of his lips. His left hand dangerous close to hers, Chang-min taps his forefinger on the work-in-progress and offers a proposition while supporting himself with his right. ❝ …Let’s talk about your book over dinner. ❞ 

So-hyun was used to a routine she had set for herself and yet the unexpected turn of events that would occur when around Chang-min caused a chill to run down her spine. She couldn’t quite explain if that was a good or a bad thing but a smile would set on her lips instantly and that had to be a sign. Her chest felt a bit lighter but it was only temporary. His gaze meeting hers and his hand dangerously close to hers seemed to cause agitation in her body again.

“I’m always ready to discuss books over dinner.” Despite the agitation he caused, So-hyun managed to hold his gaze, her smile soft as he was used to seeing on her. A woman as calm as So-hyun, that held such a storm inside her, didn’t allow her smile to give away too much, just the right amount of feeling to capture one’s heart. Her eyes, however, spoke a million words. It was just seconds after her lips moved that she was bringing her notebook to her chest (along with the poetry book that helped her with her work-in-progress), holding it close to her, and tilting her head slightly to the side with the same smile. “Let’s go? I’m curious as to where you made reservations.”

mermaids? hardly. when she was drowning on that fateful autumn afternoon, the only thing that surrounded her was water, nothing more, nothing less. and after that, darkness.

she remembered bits and pieces of the day she had decided to kill herself but she remembered vividly that there weren’t any mermaids because it wasn’t a fairytale. it was harsh, it was dark and it was cold. and before all that, it was lonely.

“mermaids?” sohyun slowly raised her eyebrow, unknowingly, her teeth grabbing hold of her bottom lip as she thought long and hard in a kind way to express her real thoughts. she could have redirected the other to a thousand different books she had read, a million different sources, that could have given her all the information known about mermaids. and yet, she could also tell her straight and objectively that no such thing existed, not in sohyun’s world, not in her mind. 

how could such a woman have the dream of writing children’s books?

“i don’t believe in them. though, i have to say, they are interesting to write about, i guess. and children love them so-- you can’t deny there is a charm to them. it would be nice if they existed.”

"Did you hit your head? You keep rubbing over the same spot."

it had been a long day. not only had she worked an extra hour to make up for the chaos a little girl had launched with a tantrum in the bookstore, but her head had been hurting all day in a specific spot on the right side, inches above her ear. the only time she remembered it to hurt that much was a year after the accident, a year after she had gone out of the hospital. it seemed as if with the pain, memories resurfaced as well and they were just as painful as the ache on her head.

“it’s-- it’s probably nothing...” even while saying that, sohyun appeared rather worried, losing focus on their conversation, seemingly lost. “i’m sure it will fade eventually. it’s probably just because i overworked today.”

attempting her best not to worry the other, she forced a smile, her hand retrieving from that spot on her head that was causing most pain, hoping that with such an action, the topic would be dropped just as well. 

“what were you saying though? i spaced out.”
