Someone said “The slow burn of becoming yourself” and I think that might be one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. It’s such a good reminder of how much it takes, how much character development, how much change, and beauty and courage it takes to reach your soul and I hope no one ever gives up on becoming themselves because it’s a never ending journey that only gets better.
and all he did was release paleta
THAT'S HIM

PART 1
january 11, 2024
you can’t forget him. no matter how hard you try. your thoughts keep circling back to him, again and again, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.
only when you step into your apartment that night, the same night he dropped you off in front of your complex, you realize something. you didn’t exchange contact details. no phone number. no social media. nothing. he now knows where you live. but you? all you know is his name. and his birthday.
so you google. hollis, los angeles, january 5.
and to your surprise, you find him. his picture pops up, and instantly that same flutter spreads through your stomach, the same one you felt a week ago when he smiled at you for the first time in that bowling alley.
your fingers move slowly across your phone screen. “musician,” you mumble to yourself, clicking on his instagram account. he really is unbelievably good-looking. fuck.
god, you want to message him. but isn’t that weird? he doesn’t exactly have a small following either. the last thing you want is for him to think you’re just some random fangirl. still, you scroll. his music is good. not what you usually listen to, but good. he seems to spend a lot of time with the guys. and his comments are filled with girls practically worshipping him.
of course.
you sigh. you’re just about to toss your phone onto your bed in frustration when it happens. your thumb slips. it accidentally hits the like button. fuck.
fuck. fuck. fuck.
for a second you just stare at the screen. the red heart glows back at you like it’s mocking you. no no no no. maybe he won’t notice. maybe he gets hundreds of notifications. maybe yours will drown in them. you hold your breath as if that could somehow undo what just happened. should you unlike it? but that’s worse. isn’t it? you imagine him looking at his phone. seeing your name. who is that? oh. bowling girl.
bowling girl.
you squeeze your eyes shut and fall back onto your bed, your phone still clutched to your chest. why are you like this?
you wait. and wait. nothing happens. you unlock your phone again. still nothing. no notification. no message. of course not. what did you expect? that he’d instantly text you? hey bowling girl, thanks for stalking my instagram? you groan softly into your pillow.
and then… your phone buzzes. your entire body goes rigid. slowly, like you’re defusing a bomb, you lift the screen in front of your face.
2hollis started following you.
your stomach drops. then flips. what. you stare at the notification. read it again. and again. and again. this is worse. this is so much worse. because now he’s looking at your profile.
you open your page in panic. what is even on there? you scroll frantically. photos from parties. mirror selfies. a blurry sunset. that one picture of you in that tiny black dress you really like. oh god.
your phone buzzes again. this time it’s a dm.
your heart is beating so loud you’re convinced your neighbors can hear it. you open it.
2hollis: bowling practice going well?
you let out a sound that’s somewhere between a laugh and a gasp. you stare at the message, thumbs hovering over the keyboard. don’t respond too fast. that looks desperate. but don’t wait too long either.
why is this so hard? you type. delete. type again. delete again.
finally:
y/n_l/n: getting better ig haven’t dropped a ball in at least 24h
you stare at it. too dry? cringe? before you can overthink it any further, you hit send. immediately your pulse spikes again.
he replies almost instantly.
2hollis: proud of you
three dots appear again. your heart climbs into your throat.
2hollis: was wondering when you’d find me lol
your breath catches. what does that mean?
you reread it five times. was wondering when you’d find me. so he expected this? he wanted you to look him up? did he purposely not ask for your number? your fingers tremble slightly as you type back.
y/n_l/n: oh really?
a pause. then:
2hollis: you didn’t think i’d just leave it at that, did you?
you swallow. what exactly is “that”? the bowling alley? the ride? the comment about your jeans? your mind flashes back to him leaning out of the car window. the way he said your name. the way his hand felt on your lower back. you stare at the screen, heat creeping up your neck.
y/n_l/n: leave what at what exactly? :)
a minute passes. two. you start spiraling again. maybe that was too much. too confrontational. too…
the phone buzzes.
2hollis: i don’t usually let interesting girls disappear like that
interesting. not cute. not hot. interesting.
y/n_l/n: oh come on lol…
you don’t know where this version of you is coming from. maybe it’s the distance of a screen. maybe it’s the fact that he can’t see your hands shaking. he replies slower this time.
2hollis: idk you look like you’re always thinking about something you’re not saying
your breath stops. how could he possibly know that? you stare at the message until it blurs.
2hollis: or am i wrong?
you type before you lose your nerve.
y/n_l/n: maybe.
the three dots appear almost instantly.
2hollis: good
your stomach flips again. good?
2hollis: i like a challenge :)
and there it is. that shift. that subtle tightening in the air. suddenly this isn’t just a harmless dm. this isn’t just bowling girl and birthday cake. this feels like something else. something that could tip in a direction you’re not sure you’re ready for again.
you lean back against your headboard, staring at his profile picture in the corner of the chat. black eyeliner. blond hair. you should be careful. you know you should.
but instead, you type:
y/n_l/n: careful you might lose
and the second you press send, you realize something terrifying. you actually don’t want him to.
january 13, 2024
you’ve been texting nonstop. well. not nonstop. but enough. enough that his name at the top of your screen feels familiar now. enough that you wake up and instinctively check if he texted. enough that your stomach does that small, involuntary flip every time your phone lights up.
he’s different over text than you expected. he asks questions you don’t see coming. he sends voice notes sometimes, low and calm, like he knows exactly what that does to you. and now you’re standing in front of your mirror, staring at your reflection, because you agreed to meet him tonight.
“it’s just a drink,” you mumble to yourself. but it’s not just a drink. it’s the first time you’ll see him again since that night. you change outfits three times. you finally settle on black. of course you do. some low rise jeans. a black tiny top with a print of a band you like to listen to. a slightly oversized jacket. subtle makeup but heavier eyeliner than usual. you tell yourself it’s not on purpose. not at all.
your phone buzzes.
2hollis: i’m here
your pulse spikes instantly. you look out the window of your apartment. and there he is. leaning against his car. for a second, you just stand there and stare. is this a mistake? you grab your bag. you lock the door behind you. you take the elevator down and try to slow your breathing. you don’t want to look flustered. you don’t want him to know what he does to you.
the building door opens. cold air hits your face. he looks up. and the second his eyes land on you, he smiles. not the polite smile from the bowling alley. not the teasing grin. something slower and more deliberate.
“hey,” he says, pushing off the car.
“hey,” you reply, praying your voice doesn’t shake.
for a moment, neither of you move. he steps closer. and suddenly you’re very aware again of how tall he is. how close. how his cologne mixes with the air.
“you look good,” he says softly and your stomach tightens.
“thank you…”
he tilts his head slightly, studying you in that way that makes you feel like you’re being read. your heart skips. he smirks.
“get in the car.”
you hesitate for a second.
“where are we going?”
“you said you trust me, remember?”
did you? you must have. you hold his gaze for a second longer than necessary.
“i do,” you say quietly. and that might be the first real lie of the night.
he opens the door for you again. same stupid, charming gesture. you slide into the passenger seat, trying not to think about the last time you were here. he gets in. starts the engine. music fills the silence. you glance at him.
“so where are you taking me?”
he looks straight ahead, one hand on the steering wheel.
“there’s this bar in silver lake. good drinks. no one annoying.”
you nod. the city lights blur past outside the window of his porsche. la is beautiful. and you’re excited. but you shouldn’t be this excited. you barely know him. and yet, sitting next to him like this, it feels inevitable. like this was always going to happen.
he pulls up in front of a small bar with tinted windows and a dim neon sign. he turns off the engine. silence settles between you for a second.
“you nervous?” he asks without looking at you.
you swallow.
“no.”
he finally turns his head and smiles like he knows that’s not true.
“good,” he says softly. “because i am.”
your eyes widen slightly.
“you?”
he shrugs. “yeah.”
“why?”
“i don't know. i don’t usually get nervous.”
you open the car door before you can overthink it. cool air hits your skin again. he walks around the car to meet you. for a second, you’re just standing there. close. very close. the bar door opens behind you, music spilling out. but neither of you move. his hand brushes lightly against yours. not fully and not intentionally. and your entire body reacts. he notices. of course he does. his eyes darken slightly.
“ready?” he asks.
you just nod.
january 14, 2024
you wake up too early. sunlight slips through the blinds in thin lines across your ceiling. your head doesn’t hurt. you didn’t drink that much. it’s not alcohol that kept you awake. it’s him. you replay the night in fragments.
the bar was dark. low ceilings. red lights that made everything look softer than it actually was. he ordered for you without asking what you wanted. you almost protested but the drink was good. a lot stronger than what you usually have though.
he doesn’t talk too much, that’s what you noticed. he asks questions instead. lets you speak. watches you when you do. you remember the way his knee brushed against yours under the small table. once. twice. then it just stayed there. neither of you moved it.
you told him about your small town. about la feeling unreal to you sometimes.
you roll onto your side, staring at your phone on the nightstand. no message yet. why does that disappoint you? you close your eyes and it comes back to you; the moment outside the bar. his car parked under a flickering streetlight. you were standing too close again. he looked at you the same way he had the night he drove you home.
“i had a good time,” he said.
“me too.”
a pause. then his hand found your waist this time. steady. you felt your breath change.
“come back with me,” he said quietly.
your heart had started racing immediately. not because you didn’t want to. because you did. you already pictured it multiple times. his apartment. his room. his hands. him fucking you in all positions you could imagine.
“i can’t,” you said.
he tilted his head slightly. not annoyed. just curious.
“can’t or won’t?”
you swallowed.
“both.”
he stepped closer anyway. not touching you more. just closing the space between your bodies.
“you think i’m trying to play you or something?” he asked, almost amused.
you forced yourself to hold his gaze.
“i think you’re used to getting what you want.”
a faint smile.
“and?”
“and i don’t want to be easy.”
there it was. you expected him to laugh. or roll his eyes. or push harder. he didn’t.
“who said anything about easy?” he murmured. his thumb brushed along your hip slowly and your body reacted instantly. heat pooling low in your stomach.
“you’re shaking, dear,” he said softly.
“it’s cold.”
“it’s not that cold.”
you hate that he’s right. he leaned down slightly. close enough that you could feel his breath near your mouth.
“just come over,” he said. quieter now. “we don’t have to do anything.”
you almost laughed at that. almost. your hand came up and rested lightly against his chest, grounding yourself.
“that’s not true,” you said. a beat. “you’d try.”
he didn’t deny it. instead he smiled again. slow.
“maybe.”
your stomach flipped. this is how it happens, you thought. you could say yes. you almost did. instead, you leaned up and kissed him. quick at first. just to shut him up. but the second your lips touched his, everything shifted. his hand tightened slightly at your waist. not rough. firm. he kissed you back like he’d been waiting for it. your fingers curled into his shirt. he deepened it slowly. and when you responded, when you parted your lips without thinking, he let out the faintest breath against your mouth. you felt it everywhere.
this is a mistake. such a mistake.
“see?” he murmured. “not that hard.”
this made you step back immediately.
space.
air.
“i’m going home,” you said.
his expression didn’t change much. just that faint narrowing of his eyes.
“okay.”
okay? you expected more resistance. or him telling you, he’s gonna drop you off, just the way he insisted on when you first met. but nothing.
instead, he reached out and brushed his thumb gently across your bottom lip.
“text me when you get home.”
your heart stuttered. you nodded. you walked away before you could change your mind. you didn’t look back. but you felt him watching.
you open your eyes again in your bed. your lips still feel swollen. your body still remembers the way he held you. you stood your ground. you did. so why does it feel like he still won?
your phone buzzes and your heart jumps. you reach for it too quickly.
2hollis: made it home?

from that night on, everything began to spiral. at least that’s what it feels like when you look at it now. not because hollis pulled away. but because he didn’t. he kept texting you. regularly. consistently. almost reassuringly.
good morning. how was work. eat something. send me a pic.
he asked to see you often. not demanding anything, just casually.
“you free tonight?”
“i miss your face.”
“come hang.”
you said no a few times and he never reacted negatively.
one evening he texted you around 8:30.
2hollis: come over wanna show you something
you stared at the screen.
y/n_l/n: what?
2hollis: my studio. haven’t shown you yet.
a pause.
2hollis: promise i’ll behave.
you laughed and told yourself it was fine. it was just his studio. you wanted to see where he worked anyway. you wanted to understand him better. that’s what you told yourself.
he ordered you an uber that dropped you off at his apartment. you’ve seen it on photos he’s sent to you. but tonight it looked darker than usually. and quieter too.
you rang the doorbell. "frazier-herndon." he opened the door and greeted you with a kiss on the cheek this time. soft and gentle like nothing had ever been tense between you. he had his hair in two low ponytails and wore a black snapback backwards. god, he looked hot.
"welcome, dear." he took your hand and lead you. the studio was a small room at the end of the hallway. dim lights. speakers. cables everywhere. a mic in the corner. he played you something unreleased. stood close behind you while it played. not touching though. just close enough that you could feel the warmth of him.
“what do you think?” he murmured near your ear.
you turned your head slightly. he’s too close.
“it’s good,” you said.
he smiled.
“i know.”
after that, it was easy. he poured drinks and you sat on his huge white comfy couch. legs tucked under you. the movie he put on playing in the background, neither of you really watching. his hand found your thigh halfway through as if it had always belonged there. you didn’t move it. you leaned into him instead. the alcohol made everything easier for you.
the lights were low. his voice was low. you remember laughing at something he said. you remember his fingers tracing slow circles on your skin. you remember thinking you should probably leave soon.
but you didn’t.
his lips found yours. slow. he gave you time to stop him but you didn’t want to. your body needed him. you needed him. his hand slid from your thigh to your waist. then lower. pausing. waiting.
“still not easy?” he murmured against your mouth.
your breath hitched.
“you’re so annoying,” you whispered back.
he smiled into the kiss.
“you came here still.”
and he wasn’t wrong.
he stood and lifted you up.
“come on, love." hollis carried you to his bedroom and put you down on his bed. he turned the small lights on and observed you for a second. then he moved towards you, carefully, like he knew you were fragile. he kissed you like he had all the time in the world. and maybe he did. because you were the one whose pulse was racing. not his. and you were the one thinking about consequences. he was calm.
“you’re overthinking again,” he murmured softly at one point, brushing your hair back.
“i’m not,” you lied, shaking your head.
he kissed you again. deeper this time. and when you stopped hesitating, when you finally stopped holding yourself back, he didn’t look surprised at all. he looked satisfied. not in a triumphant way. just satisfied. like he knew this would happen eventually.
you reached for his tank top without even thinking about it. your fingers curled into the fabric, tugging lightly at first, then more urgently. you needed it gone. you needed the space between you to disappear. you needed him closer. as close as he could possibly get.
he understood immediately. there was no teasing. no slow commentary. he pulled the tank top over his head in one smooth motion and tossed it somewhere behind him without breaking eye contact.
for a second, you just looked at him. the dim light from the small lamps traced the lines of his body, highlighting the tension in his shoulders, the definition of his chest, the way his muscles shifted subtly when he moved. you had never seen someone like him this close before. not like this.
he caught the way your gaze lingered. the way your mouth had fallen slightly open without you noticing. you were lying on your back, breath uneven, looking up at him as he hovered above you, kneeling between your legs, one hand resting beside your head.
“what?” he murmured, almost amused.
you didn’t answer. you couldn’t.
he leaned down and kissed you again, his hands slid to your wrists and he pinned them gently but firmly into the mattress. then his fingers released you only to move lower, hooking into the hem of your shirt. he lifted it over your head leaving you in nothing but the lace bra you had chosen earlier that evening. the one you told yourself was ridiculous. pointless. he wouldn’t see it anyway, you had thought while standing in front of your mirror. and yet here you were. bare beneath him.
he took a moment to look at you. your skin felt too sensitive under his gaze.
“just relax, okay?” he murmured, voice low and controlled.
you nodded. but your thoughts were racing. you had imagined this too many times to count. imagined his hands, his mouth, him. every night since that first bowling alley smile. and now it wasn’t imagination. you were in his bed. his sheets were real beneath your back. his breath was warm against your skin.
he leaned down again, pressing slow kisses along your neck, down to your collarbone. lower. over the curve of your chest. unhurried. as if he had nothing but time. your body arched instinctively beneath him. he continued downward, lips tracing over your stomach, the heat of his mouth leaving a trail that made it impossible to think clearly. he stopped just above the waistband of your pants, fingers resting there for a second as if asking without words.
then he undid the buttons. slowly. the fabric slid down your legs, leaving you in nothing but your underwear. the air in the room suddenly felt cooler against your skin. he sat back slightly, taking you in.
“you’re beautiful y/n,” he whispered and it sounded almost like he was saying it to himself.
his fingers hook under your black lace panties.
“will you take them off for me, love?”
without hesitation, you lift your hips and slide them down. hollis helps you, his movements slow and deliberate. but instead of tossing them to the floor where the rest of your clothes lie scattered, he brings them up to his face. your breath catches. he inhales slowly.
they’re warm. damp with your arousal. heat rushes to your cheeks instantly, your face burning as you realize what he’s doing.
“so wet for me already, y/n,” he murmurs.
then he folds the lace carefully and slips it into the pocket of the pants he’s still wearing.
your thighs press together instinctively. partly because you feel exposed, partly to ease the tension building between your legs. it’s overwhelming. almost too much. he notices.
“will you let me make you feel good, baby?” his voice is low, steady.
“yes, hollis.”
and that’s all it takes. he gently parts your legs again, guiding them open with firm hands. he leans down slowly, placing a soft kiss against your most sensitive spot. the sudden contact makes you flinch, your breath catching in your throat. then his tongue begins to move against you, tease you. your fingers twist into the sheets beneath you. your head falls back. the sensation spreads through your body, warm and consuming. it feels unreal. like floating. like heaven. you feel yourself getting closer.
“i need you inside of me,” you breathe out between heavy breaths, the words slipping from your mouth before you can stop them. you push yourself up slightly on your elbows, looking down at him. his hair is messy now, falling into his eyes, his lips still covered in your wetness. he looks almost unreal between your legs.
hollis straightens immediately, rising to his full height. he pushes his grey pants down slowly, letting them fall to the floor. your eyes follow the movement without shame, without hesitation. his huge cock sprang out, all veiny and thick, his tip glistening with pre cum. desire settles deep in your stomach, undeniable. you don’t think you’ve ever wanted anything this intensely before.
he steps closer, positioning himself between your thighs again. but instead of pushing in right away, he drags himself slowly along your folds, teasing, circling your clit with the tip of his throbbing dick.
“stop teasing me,” you whisper, the frustration in your voice surprising even you. “please… just fuck me.”
he lets out a low chuckle, eyes dark as they lock onto yours.
“so eager, baby?” he murmurs, almost amused. “are you on birth control?”
his gaze doesn’t waver from yours, and the intensity of it alone is almost enough to undo you. for a moment, it feels like you could cum just from the way he’s watching you.
“i’m not on the pill…” you admit, hoping he wouldn’t back away from you now. but instead he gave you a look you couldn’t really read.
“alright, love, i’ll pull out, yeah?"
you nod your head frantically, hoping that he would now finally break the distance between you.
“breathe,” he murmurs against your mouth.
you don’t realize you’ve been holding your breath until you exhale shakily. your fingers curl into his shoulders, pulling him closer, your body arching toward him. he moves with controlled patience, never losing that calm composure that drives you insane. when he finally shifts forward, when the distance between you disappears, the sensation makes you gasp softly. it’s overwhelming for a second. intense. his forehead rests against yours.
“okay?” he asks quietly.
“yes.”
and then he moves. slow at first, giving you time to adjust to his length, time to settle into the feeling. your hands slide down his back, holding onto him as the rhythm builds gradually. he watches you the entire time, reading every expression, every reaction. the world narrows to the sound of your breathing, the warmth of his skin against yours, the way his name slips from your lips without you meaning for it to.
he shifts suddenly, reaching for one of the pillows and sliding it beneath your hips. the angle changes instantly. the sensation changes with it. your breath catches. and then he moves again.
this time it hits differently. deeper. exactly where it makes your body unravel. your hands fly to his shoulders, nails pressing into his skin as your head falls back against the sheets.no one has ever made you feel this.
the pleasure builds too fast, too intense, leaving you breathless. your moans spill into the room without restraint, filling the space between you. you’re not controlling anything anymore. not your sounds. not your reactions. not the way your body responds to him. it’s overwhelming.
and then it happens.
the wave crashes through you so suddenly you gasp, your entire body tightening before releasing all at once. you come all over his cock pumping in and out of you and you squirt for the first time ever, all over his linen sheets. heat floods through you, unfamiliar and powerful, leaving you trembling beneath him. the sensation is different from anything you’ve felt before. bigger. messier. out of control.
you cry out, face burning as realization hits. what just happened?
oh my god.
for a second, hollis stills. he looks down at you, eyes widening slightly, not in shock, but kinda in fascination.
“did you just…?” he begins, breath uneven. “was that-?”
your cheeks burn even hotter.
“i’m sorry-” you manage, embarrassed by how little control you had over your own body.
“don’t apologize,” he interrupts softly, “that was so fucking hot.”
he leans down and kisses you again, but his rhythm returns quickly, more urgent this time. his movements grow sharper, less patient, as if your reaction only pushed him further.
it doesn’t take long. he pulls out and cums all over your stomach, covering you in his white liquid. when he finally pulls away, breath heavy, you feel the last of the tension leave him. he exhales, eyes still on you, taking in the sight of your flushed skin, your trembling body, the aftermath written across you.
you lie there for a moment, dazed, heart racing. hollis grabs a tissue from his nightstand and helps you clean yourself up.
then you lay next to him staring at the ceiling, your skin still incredibly warm. your thoughts way louder than before. he traced lazy patterns on your arm.
“see?” he murmured quietly.
you turned your head to look at him.
“see what?”
“not that scary right.”
your chest tightened. you wanted to leave. out of a sudden you felt exposed. you felt bad for giving in. not able to resist him. you get out of bed and gather your clothes. hollis doesn’t stop you.
when you were putting your clothes back on in his bathroom, you looked at yourself in the mirror. you looked the same. but something felt different. in you. he had been patient. he had been kind. he had given you space. and he had gotten exactly what he wanted.
when you stepped back into his bedroom, he was already on his phone. just briefly. then he looked up. smiled. soft again.
“you want me to call you an uber home?"
. ⊹ ₊ ݁. ⟡ ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁. . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁. . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁.
hollis didn’t become distant. that would have been easier to recognize for you. easier to see through. instead, he stayed exactly the same. when he felt like it. he still asked about your day. still sent you snippets of songs he was working on. still told you he liked the way you think. and that’s what made it confusing for you.
because you had crossed a line. you broke your own rule. you had given him access to you in a way that felt too early. but he treated it like a natural progression, not a victory, not a conquest. just the next logical step.
he didn’t chase you harder after that. he didn’t disappear either. he remained steady and slowly, you adjusted your rhythm to his.
he would ask to see you and you would rearrange your evenings without even noticing you were doing it. he never demanded it. never guilted you. he would simply say, “are you busy?” and somehow you’d feel compelled to explain your entire schedule. when you said you had plans, he’d answer with “another time,” in that neutral tone that carried no disappointment, no pressure. and yet the next time he asked, you were more likely to say yes to him.
you started spending more nights at his place than yours. he allowed you to sleep in his bed. it wasn’t planned. it just happened. he’d fall asleep with his arm draped over your waist and you’d wake up before him, lying still so you wouldn’t disturb the illusion of intimacy he created. he looked peaceful when he slept. almost innocent. and that made it easier to ignore the tight feeling in your chest.
he never defined what you were and he never had to.
when you were out together, he would rest his hand on the small of your back in a way that felt protective. he would pull you slightly closer if someone looked at you too long. once, at a bar, he leaned down and brushed his lips against your neck while talking to someone else, like it was absentminded. like he wasn’t aware of what that did to you. people would assume you were his girlfriend. he never corrected them but he also never confirmed it.
when your friends asked, you found yourself hesitating before answering. “it’s nothing serious,” you’d say. and the moment you said it, it would sting.
sometimes he texted other people in front of you. not hiding it. not flaunting it. just casually. sometimes you’d catch a name you didn’t recognize lighting up his screen. sometimes he’d flip the phone face down without comment. if you asked who it was, he’d answer simply. “just someone from the studio.” and you’d nod like that was enough for you.
you told yourself you weren’t jealous. you told yourself you didn’t have the right to be.
but the real shift happened in smaller ways.
he began to comment on you more subtly. not your body. not in obvious ways. your reactions. your tone. your moods.
“you get quiet when you’re thinking too much.”
“you look better when you wear your hair down.”
“why are you always such a crybaby, y/n.”
once, you didn’t answer his texts for an entire afternoon on purpose. you wanted to see if he would react. if he would double text. if he would show impatience. he didn’t. he waited. and then at 9:32 p.m., you got a message.
2hollis: alive?
as if nothing had happened. as if you hadn’t been staring at your screen all day waiting for a reaction.
when you saw him that night, he kissed you the same way. held you the same way. nothing in his expression suggested he had even noticed the game you tried to play. that’s when you started realizing something uncomfortable. he wasn’t reacting to you. you were reacting to him.
there were moments, though, where he let the mask slip just enough to keep you hooked.
one night, lying in his bed, you asked him quietly, “do you ever think about where this is going?”
he didn’t look at you immediately. he kept his eyes on the ceiling.
“why does it have to go somewhere?” he replied calmly.
you didn’t know how to answer that.
another time, you joked about him being a player. you expected him to laugh it off. instead, he looked at you steadily and said, “i don’t want to promise things i can’t give to you y/n.”
and it sounded like he meant it. it also sounded like a warning.
the toxicity began to swallow you. it felt like you were slowly giving up pieces of yourself in exchange for small moments of reassurance. the way he’d text you “miss you” after not seeing you for two days.
the way he’d pull you into his chest when you were about to leave. the way he’d whisper your name like it meant something, more than it probably did to him.
you were aware. you saw how carefully he maintained control over you. how he never raised his voice. never got angry. never begged. he didn’t need to. he made you feel chosen without ever choosing you. and somewhere between his certainty and your restless wanting, the spiral tightened.

NARRATIVE
INITIAL RESPONSE:
On the above date and time, deputies from East Los Angeles Station responded to a radio call (Code 3) at 4218 Magnolia Terrace, Apt. 3F, East Los Angeles, CA 90022, regarding a reported assault in progress.
Reporting party identified himself as HOLLIS FRAZIER HERNDON (DOB 01/05/2004), the leaseholder of the above address. Reporting party stated that a female acquaintance had entered his residence and had struck another female occupant with an object. Reporting party reported the victim to be unresponsive.
SCENE:
Deputies arrived at 02:38 hours and were met in the hallway (third floor) by the reporting party, HERNDON, who appeared visibly distressed. Deputies were led to the bedroom of the apartment where the victim, subsequently identified as WREN ISABELLE GARRITY (DOB 08/03/2004), was found in a supine position on the floor between the bed and the east wall. Victim was unconscious and unresponsive. Significant blood was present beneath the victim's head and on the hardwood floor of the bedroom. LAFD personnel were already en route and arrived at 02:41 hours.
SUSPECT:
The suspect was located by deputies seated on the bedroom floor with her back against the west wall, approximately four feet from the victim. The suspect was unresponsive to initial verbal commands and did not attempt to flee or resist. She was observed to have blood on both hands and on the right sleeve of her jacket. Deputies secured the suspect and placed her in restraints at 02:47 hours. The suspect did not speak during this process and remained non-responsive to questioning at the scene. She was subsequently transported to East Los Angeles Station for processing and formal interview.
WEAPON / EVIDENCE ITEM:
A glass ashtray, approximately 4 inches in diameter, was located on the bedroom floor near the foot of the bed. The item appeared to have blood and possible hair matter consistent with contact with the victim. Item was photographed in situ and collected as evidence. Item had been displaced from the dresser surface on the north wall of the bedroom, consistent with having been grabbed from that location. One broken piece of glass was also collected from the floor immediately adjacent to the victim.
WITNESS STATEMENT (HERNDON):
HERNDON stated that he hadn’t been in the bedroom of the apartment with GARRITY when the suspect entered the apartment without his knowledge.
HERNDON stated that the suspect had access to the door entry code from a prior occasion.
HERNDON stated that the suspect appeared in the bedroom doorway, that he identified her and called her name, and that within a short interval the suspect had struck the victim.
HERNDON stated he did not intervene physically and immediately called 911.
HERNDON denied any physical altercation between himself and the suspect.
HERNDON's statement is consistent with physical evidence recovered at the scene.
HERNDON was interviewed at length and released pending further investigation. He was not detained.
MEDICAL:
GARRITY was transported via ambulance to LAC+USC Medical Center at 03:02 hours with severe head trauma. She was pronounced deceased at 03:47 hours by attending physician. Cause of death pending final determination by the Office of the Medical Examiner–Coroner; preliminary finding consistent with blunt-force head trauma with secondary sharp-force laceration. An autopsy has been ordered.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Woman Dead in East L.A. Homicide Linked to Rising Musician 2hollis; Suspect Charged
A 21-year-old woman was killed early Thursday morning at the East Los Angeles apartment of Hollis Frazier Herndon (2hollis), 22, whose debut record has drawn significant industry attention this year. A woman, 25, has been charged with murder.
By CLAIRE ODUYA and MARCUS BELL
March 22
The apartment building on Magnolia Terrace in East Los Angeles looks, from the outside, like dozens of others in the neighborhood — a three-story stucco walkup with a buzzer panel by the door and a dying ficus in the lobby. On the morning of March 14, it became a crime scene.
Wren Isabelle Garrity, 21, was pronounced dead at LAC+USC Medical Center at 3:47 a.m., less than two hours after sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call from the building's third floor. A second woman, 25, was taken into custody at the scene and has since been charged with second-degree murder and unlawful entry. She has not beenpublicly identified.
What has drawn national attention to the case is the identity of the man who made that call: Hollis Frazier Herndon, publicly known as 2hollis, the 22-year-old producer and singer whose label debut album "star" has spent eleven weeks on the rap charts and generated considerable buzz in musiccircles for its electronic, confessional sound. The apartment where Garrity died is his.
"This is an unimaginable tragedy," said a spokesperson for Herndon's label, Interscope Records, in a statement released Monday. "Hollis is cooperating fully with law enforcement. Our thoughts are entirely with Wren Garrity's family during this devastating time. We ask that the media respect the privacy of everyone involved."
Herndon has not made any public statement. His social media accounts, which had amassed nearly 1 million followers across platforms in the months following the release of "star," have been inactive since March 14.
A PRIVATE LOSS, A PUBLIC NAME
For those who know Garrity, the focus on Herndon has been a source of quiet frustration. "She was not a footnote," said a close friend of Garrity's who asked not to be named, speaking by phone from Los Angeles. "She was a whole person. She had a life. People keep asking about him and she's just — she's the reason any of this matters."
Garrity, a Glendale native, had been living in Los Feliz and working as a junior graphic designer at a small creative agency in Silver Lake. Colleagues described her as warm, meticulous, and privately funny. A former classmate at CalArts, where Garrity had studied design, said she had recently been accepted into a graduate program.
"She was just starting," the classmate said. "She had so many plans."
How Garrity knew Herndon, and the nature of their relationship, has not been disclosed by investigators. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has confirmed only that the two were acquaintances.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released by authorities, is described in public records as a 25 year-old Los Angeles woman with no prior criminal history. She was denied bail at her arraignment last week. Sources familiar with the investigation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is ongoing, said the suspect was also known to Herndon, though the specific nature of that relationship is expected to be a central element of the prosecution's case.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office declined to comment beyond confirming the charges.
THE RECORD, THE ROOMS, THE SUDDEN QUIET
Hollis Frazier Herndon had, by most accounts, arrived.
Raised in Pasadena, the son of PR mogul Kathryn Frazier and musician John Herndon, Herndon began producing at eleven and was performing his debut show in NYC by eighteen. He released a series of self-produced EPs that circulated quietly within the Soundcloud community. The sound — electronic, trappy, with lyrics that critics described variously as "confessional," "unsettling," and "deceptively simple" — developed a devoted following.
He was photographed for three magazine covers. He declined most requests to discuss his personal life. Those who had followed his career from the beginning described a more complicated figure.
"He was always like that," said one musician who produced with Herndon in his early years and who asked not to be identified. "Very guarded. Very aware of how he came across. I think he liked being a little unknowable. It worked for the music. I don't know how well it worked for everything else."
Since the night of March 14, Herndon has not performed, given interviews, or appeared publicly. A spring tour, announced in February and featuring dates across North America and Western Europe, was quietly removed from his website within days of the incident. No cancellation was formally announced.
THE INVESTIGATION
Detectives from the LASD Homicide Bureau have taken over the investigation from East Los Angeles Station, which handled the initial response. Sheriff's officials have described the case as straightforward in terms of evidence but declined to elaborate. The suspect's public defender did not respond to a request for comment.
The trial date has not yet been set. Legal observers note that cases of this nature, involving a defendant with no criminal history and a crime described by investigators as unpremeditated, frequently involve extended pre-trial proceedings as both sides assess the viability of a plea arrangement.
Sources close to the case suggest the prosecution intends to argue that the suspect's actions, while not planned in advance, were the culmination of a documented pattern of behavior directed at Herndon over an extended period. Defense attorneys are expected to contest that framing.
"Whatever happened in that room," said one attorney with knowledge of similar cases who reviewed publicly available information at the Times' request, "the question of what preceded it — the nature of the relationships involved, the history between these people — that is going to be the whole trial. The act itself will almost be secondary."
GARRITY'S FAMILY
The Garrity family released a brief statement through a representative on Tuesday.
"Wren was the brightest part of every room she was ever in. She was loved beyond measure and she is already missed beyond words. We ask for privacy as we grieve, and we ask that those writing and speaking about this case remember that our daughter was a person, not a detail in someone else's story."
A memorial is being planned for a date to be announced.

'Come Here': The Obsession, the Trial, and the Impossible Question at the Heart of the 2hollis Case
After three weeks of testimony, a woman has been sentenced to fifteen years to life for the murder of Wren Isabelle Garrity. The courtroom left behind more questions than it answered — about fame, about desire, and about how much one person can owe another for what they allowed.
By SIMONE ACHTERBERG
On the second day of the trial, a prosecutor read a text message aloud to the courtroom.
It said: come here.
Two words. No punctuation. No context. Sent at 2:17 a.m. on a Tuesday in October, fourteen months before a woman died in the sender's apartment.
The prosecutor paused after reading it. The pause was deliberate — long enough to let the room understand that this was the beginning of something. Then she read the response.
The defendant had replied within four minutes.
She had said: on my way.
There were, the prosecution told the jury, 186 exchanges that followed this pattern over the course of approximately 14 months. One person sending for the other in the middle of the night. The other coming. The record of that pattern — reconstructed from phone data, text logs, and location history — formed the spine of the case against her. Not the night itself. Everything that preceded it.
The defendant was sentenced last week to fifteen years to life in state prison following her conviction on one count of second-degree murder. She was also convicted on a concurrent charge of unlawful entry. She showed no visible reaction when the verdict was read. She had shown very little visible reaction throughout theentirety of the three-week trial, sitting at the defense table with the focused stillness of someone who had decided, early on, to feel everything privately or not at all.
The victim, Wren Isabelle Garrity, was 21 years old. She has been dead for almost a year.
THE MAKING OF AN OBSESSION
To understand the trial, you have to understand what the prosecution was actually arguing — which was not, in the end, a story about a single act of violence. It was a story about accumulation.
"The defendant did not decide to kill anyone on the night of March 14," Deputy District Attorney Rosa Mendiola told the jury in her opening statement. "She had been deciding, for two years, to subordinate every other part of her life to a person who did not ask her to and did not want her to. What happened on March 14 was not the beginning of anything. It was the end."
The picture that emerged over three weeks of testimony was one that will be familiar in its broad contours to anyone who followed the case in the press — and, given the involvement of Hollis Frazier Herndon, the 22-year-old musician whose debut album "star" had made him one of the most talked-about new artists of the previous year, a great many people had. But the details, as they surfaced in the courtroom, had a texture that news summaries could not quite capture.
The defendant had met Herndon approximately two years before the incident at a party in Silver Lake. She was, at the time, working a stable office job and described by former colleagues as competent, reserved, and pleasant to be around. Within six months of meeting Herndon, two of those colleagues told the court, she had become difficult to reach, frequently distracted, and prone to canceling plans without explanation. Within a year, she had effectively withdrawn from most of her social relationships.
A forensic psychologist retained by the prosecution, Dr. Adaeze Okonkwo, testified for two days about what she described as "erotomania-adjacent fixation" — a pattern of obsessive attachment in which the subject constructs an elaborately meaningful interpretation of an essentially ambiguous relationship.
"The defendant was not delusional in a clinical sense," Dr. Okonkwo told the court. "She understood, on some level, that the relationship was undefined and unequal. What she did was choose, repeatedly, to interpret ambiguity as potential. Every text, every invitation, every instance of physical intimacy was processed not as evidence of what the relationship was, but as evidence of what it might become. This is not a mental illness. It is a pattern of thinking. And like any pattern, it became, over time, very difficult to interrupt."
The defense contested this framing vigorously. The defendant's attorney, public defender Nathaniel Cross, argued throughout the trial that his client had been in a genuine, if undefined, intimate relationship with Herndon — one that Herndon had cultivated, sustained, and refused to clarify, and that his behavior bore at least partial responsibility for the psychological state his client found herself in on the night of March 14.
"My client did not arrive at that apartment as a stranger," Cross told the jury. "She arrived as someone who had been invited there, repeatedly, over the course of two years. Someone who knew the door code because she had been given it. Someone who had spent the night in that bed, cooked in that kitchen, sat on that couch. Whatever Hollis Frazier Herndon may say about the nature of their relationship now, the record of his behavior tells a different story."
It was an argument that landed differently depending on who you asked. Legal observers noted that it stopped well short of a full responsibility defense — Cross was careful never to suggest that Herndon had caused the death of Wren Garrity — but it introduced into the proceedings something the prosecution worked hard to keep out: the uncomfortable question of what, exactly, Herndon had known he was doing.
THE MESSAGES
The text messages were the trial's most discussed element, both inside the courtroom and out.
There were the 186 late-night summonses. But the prosecution also introduced a larger archive — 4,300 messages in total, spanning the full duration of the relationship. Most were mundane. Some were not.
Herndon's side of the exchange, read aloud to the jury, was notable primarily for its brevity and its consistency. Short messages. Infrequent responses. When he did reply, often a single word, or nothing at all. The prosecution argued this demonstrated a man who was aware he was being pursued and chose, repeatedly, to encourage that pursuit without making any commitment that might be held against him.
The defendant's side was different in almost every way — longer, more emotionally exposed, oscillating between affection and hurt and self-reproach with a candor that made the courtroom, on more than one occasion, go uncomfortably quiet.
One message, sent at 3 a.m. on a night in the second year, read:
i know you're not mine. i just don't know how to make my body understand that.
Herndon had not replied.
A juror, speaking anonymously after the verdict, said that message had stayed with her. "It wasn't the violence that was hard to watch," she said. "It was everything before it. Watching someone disappear like that, message by message, and the other person just — not saying anything."
HERNDON ON THE STAND
Hollis Frazier Herndon testified on the eighth day of the trial.
He had not spoken publicly since the night of March 14, and the courtroom was at capacity. He looked different. Older in a way that seemed unrelated to the fourteen months that had passed. The ease that had characterized his public appearances — the particular quality of nonchalance that critics had written about — was gone.
He sat in the witness box like someone who had recently and thoroughly run out of the energy required for performance.
He described the relationship as, in his words, "undefined." He said he had not been in love with the defendant. He said he had cared about her. He said he had not understood the extent of what she was experiencing. Under cross-examination, he acknowledged the late-night messages. He acknowledged the physical intimacy. He acknowledged that he had known, on some level, that she wanted more than he was offering.
"Why didn't you tell her that directly?" Cross asked.
A silence followed that lasted long enough to be noted in subsequent coverage.
"I don't have a good answer for that," Herndon said finally.
It was the moment most cited afterward — in legal commentary, in opinion pieces, in the comment sections that had been following the trial with an investment that said something about the particular cultural moment the case had arrived in. The defendant, seated at the defense table, did not visibly react. She had been looking at her hands.
The prosecutor, on redirect, asked Herndon whether he believed his behavior had caused the death of Wren Garrity.
"No," he said.
Then, after a pause the court reporter noted lasted approximately eight seconds: "I don't know."
He was not asked to elaborate.
At no point during his testimony did he look directly at the defendant. She looked at him once, near the end, and then returned her gaze to the table in front of her. The jury watched both of them do this. It is difficult to say what they made of it.
WREN GARRITY
She has been, throughout much of the coverage of this trial, the least visible person in it.
This is a fact that her family's attorney raised during the sentencing hearing, and it is worth raising here: Wren Isabelle Garrity was a 21-year-old woman who went to a man's apartment andwas killed there. She had no relationship with the defendant. She had done nothing to the defendant. She was in room she had every right to be in, with a person she had chosen to spend time with, and she did not come home.
Her mother, Diane Garrity, spoke at sentencing. She spoke for eleven minutes. She did not look at the defendant once.
"My daughter was not famous," she said. "She was not a musician. She did not have a hundred thousand followers. Nobody was going to write a song about her. She was just a girl who wanted to be a designer and make things that were beautiful and live her life. And she doesn't get to do that now."
The courtroom was silent.
"I want whoever is reading about this case, watching it, following it for whatever reason — I want them to know her name. Wren. That's all I'm asking. Just know her name."
THE SENTENCE
Fifteen years to life.
It is, legal observers note, the minimum sentence for second-degree murder under California law, and its imposition suggests that Judge Carolyn Marsh found some merit in the defense's argument about mitigating circumstances — the lack of premeditation, the absence of any prior criminal history, the psychological evidence presented about the defendant's state of mind in the period preceding the incident.
It means the defendant will be eligible to appear before the California Board of Parole Hearings in fifteen years. Whether she will be released at that point depends on factors that cannot yet be known.
The defendant was taken from the courtroom without incident.
She did not speak.
WHAT IT LEAVES BEHIND
"star" is still streaming. It has accumulated, since the night of March 14, a number of plays that Interscope Records has not publicized and that sits, depending on how you feel about such things, somewhere between irony and tragedy. A second album is reportedly in progress. Herndon has not toured. He gave one interview, to this magazine's music desk, earlier this year — aconversation notable for its care and its silences and a single line that has been quoted more than anything else in it.
When asked whether he had anything he wished he had said or done differently, he was quiet for a long time.
"Most of it," he said. "Most of it, I would do differently."
He didn't specify which parts. The interviewer did not press him.
Wren Garrity's family has established a small fund in her name to support emerging designers. The link is in her mother's Instagram bio, which still uses a photograph from Wren's graduation. She is smiling. She is holding a rolled certificate with both hands.
She was twenty-one years old.
She had just gotten in.

you were laying in bed, your phone had been blowing up for hours. you knew it was him, you knew it was roman. you had thought this was the end, your last text was sent & you were ready to leave all the years of uncertainty and pining behind you. you thought he wanted this too. you would glace and your phone every so often, not being able to sleep.
you couldnt lie to yourself & say his texts weren't tempting. they hurt. he knew what to say, he knew how to pull on your heart strings.
you could feel the tears well in your eyes, this happens everytime. its push and pull with him. you still remember when this all first started and you thought this would bloom into a happy regular relationship. you were so wrong.
before you know it youre sobbing, why couldnt he just be happy with just you? why couldn't he focus on two things at once? why couldn't you make him happy?
youre entire body is aching from the sobs that shook your entire body for hours. you lay there, not a singular muscle in works. you close your eyes, giving up on even feeling more for him, letting yourself sleep.
you wake up to the light coming in from your curtains, you look at your phone and you had only slept for 3 hours, you sigh before staring at the ceiling
you contemplate just checking the texts he had sent, but you had known it would only end badly on your part. you knew not to get on social media. you knew your feed would be filled with him on tour right now.
videos of him holding girls hands at barricades, him shirtless on stage, his beautiful hair moving with him.
you have no motivation to get up, you dont want to. memories of him everywhere, not even your room, your sanctuary, was safe. he was everywhere. he marked his territory on you and your life the second he walked in. and you have to pay the price knowing his spirit haunts the very walls you feel trapped between now.
memories of you guys sitting in the floor making his music when he just started, memories of him singing to you while you study, memories of you guys giggling over random videos at 3am. he was everywhere in everything.
you continue laying there. thinking about how differently things could be right now. mourning what could have been. wanting the old him. missing the sweet boy that would hold you while crying. in any other circumstance he would be running his fingers through your hair, wiping your tears, kissing your head.
hes the only person you want despite him being the reason you feel this way. you want to call him, hear his voice, let him console you, listen to his praise. he knew how to make everything better, so why has he made everything worse?
it had been days since u sent the last text, your phone has been dead for two days. he had sent more texts before but you hadnt even had the strength to strain your neck to look over. you had done absolutely nothing but think of him and the possibilities of what could have been.
you were determining time by the light that would come and go from your curtains. it was dark, and it had been for about an hour. you close your eyes and let sleep wash over you, knowing you would spend tomorrow the same you have for the previous days.
you wake up to a hand on your knee, you were laying on your side with ur kees barely hiked up, you barely opened your eyes to see him. you could hear him say something but you couldn't comprehend it. you stay still, tears welching in your eyes, bringing your knees to your chest and bringing ur forhead to touch your knees. you let out a sob, your entire body shaking.
you had done nothing but want him for the past week and a half, and now that hes here your body reacts before you can.
"hey hey hey shhh" he says climbing in your bed and rubbing your hair, what you wanted. he knew what you wanted in every sense. you cant speak, youre not sure how youre even breathing. nothing can surpass your throat but sobs. he continues holding you, his head on yours.
your voice is trembling and you cany get any words out. he knows, he always knows.
"its okay, you dont need to talk" he says softly and slowly, always so patient. after what felt like hours of him consoling you, you're breathing regularly. your body is still trembling.
"are you okay" you nod. he knows your not, nobody in the state he found you in is. he stares at you, he knows you like the back of his hand. you can feel his eyes glaring at you. you cant bring yourself to even look up. you know the moment you do he will be able to see that you think you made a mistake. its like he can tell the inner workings of your brain by just looking at you.
you hadnt moved from your original position, you're still knees to chest. "im sorry" you can he means it by the crack in his voice, but this relationship is beyond apologies. you just nod in response, not knowing what else to say or even do
"i am, sorry." he continues "for everything. for pulling back anytime something got serious, for the empty promises, for hurting you. im so sorry"
you cant bring yourself to look at him but you use every bit of energy you have to sit up.
"then why did you do it?" you say lowly, voice creaky from not speaking for days. "why are you apologizing now?" you didnt know why you were even speaking or how you were doing it. "why string me along when you knew you werent going to take me seriously one day?"
you looked up at him, tears in your eyes. he was biting his cheek "i never meant to. when we first met, I thought you were perfect, you still are. i wanted to be the person to deserve you, i did want to take you seriously and i still do."
you thin your lips hearing this, it means nothing now "okay."
"dont do that, please" "what?" "shut me out, i know I deserve it, but please" you don't respond "i want to be good for you, i want to make us work, i want this, i want us" shivers run down your spine, you stay still. you still don't respond, not even knowing how you would.
"fuck.. please" "please let me make this up to you" he says moving closer on the bed to you, taking your face into his hands "let me take care of you, please"
you want to say no, you really do. but you have wished for days he would be here to hold you, to tell you its okay. you nod. he nods in return "you can tell me to leave first thing in the morning, okay? whatever you want" you nod agian.
he stayed truthful, he always does. he cooked for you, he picked up around your house, even spoon fed you. you didnt really speak while he did, he knew better. he didnt want your forgiveness, he wanted to help you.
he put you to bed and slept on the couch on the other side of the room. you fell asleep watching him lay down.
you woke up in the exact position you fell asleep, you look over and see him still sleeping. all the times you two slept on the couch together, you frown.
without thinking you get out of bed with your cover still around your back, before kneeling down to were hes sleeping. you contemplate getting back into bed, you wonder what you're actually doing. you crawl onto the couch before you can even think too hard. like on instinct he moves his arm for you to lay on his chest. you put your head in his shoulder, just like you used to. you can feel his hand slowly creeping up your shoulder like he's uncertain. you dont move. you guys lay like this silently for awhile.
as you're drifting off agian, you hear his soft voice in your ear.
"i love you"
