What Is the Duration of the Energy Crisis?
The CEO of Centrica, the company that owns British Gas, Chris O'Shea, told the BBC in January 2022 that "high gas prices will be here for the next 18 months to two years."
That was before Russia invaded Ukraine, and as a result of Europe turning away from Russian energy, Russia had to reduce its energy exports to the continent.
For the UK, which had limited gas reserves and was strongly dependent on other European countries that obtained much of their energy from Russia, this made an already dangerous situation even worse.
The energy crisis may well last into 2024 because global gas supplies are still insufficient to adequately satisfy demand and because Russia and the international community are still at odds over its illegitimate invasion of Ukraine.
Douglas McWilliams, vice-chairman of the Centre for Economics and Business Research, has stated that "prices are likely to be high but declining for three or four years, unless the Ukraine crisis resolves itself."
Additionally, Ben van Beurden, the CEO of Shell, issued the following warning: "It may well be that we have a number of winters where we have to find answers via efficiency savings, through rationing, and a very, very speedy buildout of alternatives."
Which bills will be most impacted by the energy crisis?
Thankfully, the government implemented the Energy Price Guarantee, which set the average annual energy expenses for a three-bedroom household at £2,500 for two years.
When combined with the £400 Cost of Living Support Package, the average home's expenditures will only go up 6.5% from October to March; however, when the support expires in April, the rise will be 27%.
This price increase would put millions more people through hardship and push hundreds of thousands more homes into fuel poverty.
Does the UK have it worse than other nations?
Yes, the crisis has had an especially negative impact on UK households.
Simply put, energy costs are greater here than in Europe.
According to the European Commission, gas costs 6.8p per kWh and electricity costs 21p per kWh on average in European nations.
Therefore, if you lived on the continent, you would pay 34% less for gas and 38% less for electricity than we do in the UK.
It doesn't help that the UK only has 9.9 terawatt hours (TWh) of gas in storage, which is 17 times less than Italy, which uses a comparable amount of gas annually.
In brief, things haven't always been this way. The domestic energy market saw stable and moderately low prices from December 2018 to March 2022.
Gas and electricity costs for a three-bedroom home in the UK averaged £1,170 per year, and they never moved much from that number during any given six-month period—only by around 10%.
Now, however, we live in a new reality where Europe's primary oil and gas provider is illegally invading a neighbour, there is a gas scarcity worldwide, and households all over the UK are struggling.
The administration must commit to accelerating the development of renewable energy sources and maintain the Cost of Living Support Package through April 2023. It is the only option.
