Another day, another show. Wheein had to admit that she definitely missed promoting, but she didn’t miss the price for the lack of sleep that came with it. Though, the cameras, the outfits, being able to perform for fans; that all made it worth it. Seeing lit up radishes left adrenaline in Wheein’s very bones. The brunette’s chest was warm with affection, regardless of her lungs fighting for air. Her orbs took in the sight of green and white in the crowd, and the cheers that followed the end of their performance.
She took a swig of water, curiously looking to her members as they rambled about the performance and fans. They looked to be on the very same high as herself, but while they got ready to go home for rest, Wheein would be doing something entirely different. They watched the other groups promoting, singing along to the songs, dancing in place, up to the usual antics the beagle group was notorious for. At the end, the members retreated to the van excluding the brunette. She waved goodbye and made her way to her usual get-away.
Since her younger days prior to debuting, Wheein sought out a specific diner as her escape. It was the only place that really brought her comfort. Especially when her dissociation got bad. A soft sigh of relief slid through her lips when the diner was in view, and it was then that she realized she hadn’t even bothered to change clothes. Red shorts still were snug against her thighs, and she wore a black hoodie over the top. Wheein, you idiot.
The familiar sound of the door that was to notify a customer, rang in the young girl’s ears and she felt the strain of idol life simply evaporate. Here, Wheein wasn’t a member of Mamamoo. She wasn’t an idol who endorsed food, or clothing, or god knows what. She was simply Jung Wheein.
That’s how she liked it.
Wheein always sat in a specific booth; it was closest to where the owners were, because after all– she considered herself good friends with both. Especially the younger of the two. The brunette flopped onto the seat of the booth, slumping forward onto the table with an over-exaggerated whine.
“Hey, gorgeous, come give Wheeinie a little bit of attention?” called out the young girl, though it was slightly muffled with her face flat into the table. Regardless, her tone was laced with affection.
the searing, bright afternoon sun was what woke her. caused by the opening of her blinds, she groans heavily as her hands grasped for a pillow, a part of her bedsheets - anything to get the damned sun to go away. “time for you to get up and eat something, darling,” her aunt whispered to her sweetly, giving a light pat to her bottom.
“auntie...” “come on, sunshine. You know you have to.” “will you at least close the blinds a little?”
some silence; and the sunlight dimmed to the point where she could open her eyes enough to drag herself out of bed. the migraine that developed from the evening before had numbed to a more tolerable state after sleeping in most of the day. with the small rub of her eyes, her feet shuffled into the kitchen, fluffy blanket draped around her shoulders as she made her way to the table. a little mumble of gratitude to her aunt, and she began to nibble on her lunch - a grilled cheese sandwich.
( she never ate much, anyway. )
the rest of the afternoon was spent back holed up in her room, watching one of her old friends perform on a music channel. jung wheein. her recent success gave kali a sense of pride, knowing that she and her members would have reached stardom one day, with their talent and hard work. the girls stood out above the rest, carried a bold charm with them that not only distinguished their style but left a staple in what girl groups could achieve.
her phone rang with a little reminder to shower, and soon she was heading down the stairs into the diner to begin her evening. this week, kali picked ‘a thousand splendid suns’ to reread, having found it difficult recently to start new books. being her favorite book, she never grew tired of reading it, veraciously turning the pages to eat up the beautiful friendship between the two friends.
there was only one other customer before kali’s ears perked up at the familiar voice, her dark eyes lifting from the pages to meet the other. one corner of her lips tugged upward, leaving a mark in her book and shutting it to provide the special attention wheein called for.
“hey, beautiful. saw you performing a little earlier, one of the recorded ones.” she leaned against her arms, tilting her head slightly. “i’m proud of you. want your usual?”
( --- @jayvss has entered the diner。)
well, since my baby left me, i found a new place to dwell. it’s down at the end of lonely street at heartbreak hotel...
a heavyset groan emitted from the back of her throat, the creak in her stool ringing in her ears as she twirls bit by bit, feet dangling from the end. the old-timey feel of the restaurant - the diner - itself bothered her. eight years, kali has worked at this diner, and for six of them she’s been a partial owner. her aunt enjoyed the idea of bringing back older times, little pieces of nostalgia decorating the walls, with bright neon lights painting its patrons hues of blues, pinks, greens, and purples. along with the low hum of jazz, rnb, and rock ‘n roll playing in the background, there was a buzzing that just recently grew familiar to her on her nightly shifts at the diner whilst her aunt slept in the apartment above.
the tacky decorations, though? never would she grow accustomed, nor would she ever like them.
the clinging noise signaled a new customer coming in for a late bite. people seldom dropped by; and if they did, it was night owls such as herself who came to get away from the stresses life brought along as you grew older. troubled writers, veracious readers, students clicking away on their laptops, and more all found a place in her restaurant.
neatly placing her bookmark into her book, she hopped off of the stool and snatched her notepad, treading over to the blonde girl who sat herself in one of the window booths. “good evening,” she began, voice raspy and drenched with deep exhaustion. “here’s your menu. anything you would like to start off for a drink, maybe some water for now?”
“Like a strange flower that blooms between seasons; Like the morning star that hangs between days; All of this, some day, will pass.”
