Before the Spark — Marilyn at the Waldorf, 1956
Photography by Eve Arnold
This photograph captures Marilyn Monroe in a rare moment of stillness — watching, waiting, poised just before she transformed a routine press conference into legend. In 1956, as Eve wrote, “there was an overwhelming amount of publicity about her.” Yet here Marilyn stands quietly, gathering herself, fully aware of the attention she would soon command. Just before this scene, wearing a black velvet gown with “straps the width of spaghetti strips,” she looked in the mirror and told Eve: “Just watch me.” And then she made her move. Halfway through the conference, Marilyn leaned forward and deliberately snapped one of those “thinner-than-thin straps.” Chaos. Laughter. Flashbulbs. A scramble for a safety pin. The room was hers. Eve approached Marilyn with attention and compassion, always searching for the truth beneath the performance. What she witnessed was not chaos — but a woman entirely in command of her own narrative.

Sometimes art just makes you STOP in your tracks, and this is one of them for me. Female sculptor @brigittelajoinie had created this powerhouse of a metal sculpture: "La Femme qui marche" (2017) - photographed by @zoeforgetphotography
Materials: Reinforced steel, steel, glue, pearl, gold leaf, oil patina, recycled elements (wire mesh, rubber, horsehair, plastic soldiers and horses, buttons).
