The Hunger Games has the FUNNIEST arranged marriage of all time btw. Katniss realizes she'll have to marry Peeta and she's obviously upset so Haymitch tries to comfort her by saying "you could do a lot worse" and Katniss is like "well DUH of course I could do worse than Peeta he's the best & handsomest person on the face of the planet but that's not the POINT I want to be able to choose for MYSELF". Then she goes and chooses Peeta anyway lol. Comedy gold I tell you

SotR spoilers re Peeta’s father

One thing I love about Suzanne Collins writing style is that she can get across so much in just one mention of a character and I think this especially true of the one mention we get of Peeta’s father Otho Mellark.

I also think there’s a real chance Otho didn’t have an actual relationship with Asterid -he just wanted to marry her because she was the prettiest girl in town.

During the scene where he doesn’t hit the ground, there’s the implication that he was not reactive in times of stress might demonstrate why he stood idly by while his son was abused by his wife.

His name, a Roman emperor, implies his family was more loyal to the Capitol than the rest of the kids in Twelve who have more organic or Appalachian names (Burdock, Asterid, Hattie, Blair, Maysilee, Marilee, Louella).

The way Haymitch describes the Mellark family body type (stocky) is so funny versus Katniss. He calls Otho “a big lug” with “meaty hands” but Katniss calls Peeta “solid” “strong” “broad-shouldered” in their initial interaction because she is attracted to him even at that point. (Which like the more I read these books the more I’m like girlie was down bad)

Also Burdock seems very Peeta coded but I cannot explain why.

Katniss and Peeta's feast in the cave comes with silverware and plates. I always found this odd- it seemed as if it would have inflated the cost frivolously. I figured it had something to do with standards in the captiol, especially with how Effie remarks about table manners on the train.

thinking abt how Haymitch handled the news that peeta loved katniss. a boy who doesn’t want to be a piece in the games, who wants to die with dignity, and who wants to paint his own poster even if it just means dying as he is, in love with the reflection of so many deceased friends.

did he see himself in peeta immediately? did he break things in his room like he did on his own train, in his own cell, in his own arena? did lenore dove come to him that night?
