American V: A Hundred Highways was released on 4 July 2006, nearly 3 years after Johnny Cash's death.
Recorded in 2003, the album contains one of the last songs the 71-year-old Cash recorded ("Like the 309," which Cash also wrote), and like the rest of the "American" series, contains cover versions of other songs, and re-recorded versions of earlier Cash recordings (going back as far as 1962 for "I'm Free from the Chain Gang Now," written by Lou Herscher and Saul Klein).
American V: A Hundred Highways peaked at #1 on the Billboard chart, Cash's first #1 since 1969's Johnny Cash at San Quentin.

I taught the weepin' willow how to cry, cry, cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear, blue sky
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you, big river
And I'm gonna sit right here until | die

integral to undertsanding johnny cash is that his older brother, who was the favorite child, was tragically killed at a young age in a freak accident and johnny carried guilt about it with him for his entire life
