Lee Heeseung was always late.

To class, to hangouts, to his part-time job, you name it.

But the three biggest things he regretted being late to were college admissions, his own college graduation, and confessing his feelings for you.

The first time Heeseung regretted being late, he was sat in his room, slumped over his desk with you on the phone. He was frustrated at himself for procrastinating and putting off his college application when he saw the words “We are not accepting admissions at this time” written in bold across his computer screen. You remember listening to him going on and on about how little time they gave, and the next he was full-on bawling, crying over how he thought his mom was going to kill him (she almost did).

Luckily, he made up for his tardiness with his persistence.

Heeseung went to far lengths to attend the same college as you, even going as far as threatening persuading the dean of admissions until they got annoyed and finally accepted his late application.

But alas, that wasn’t the last time Heeseung was going to be late for something.

The second thing he regretted being late to was his college graduation. Not only did he see his mom’s infuriated expression in the crowd as he tried to sneak to his designated seat, but he nearly missed his name being called as the graduates were given their diplomas. You couldn’t help but giggle when you saw a disheveled Heeseung practically run onto the stage, his gown unzipped and cap crooked. Heeseung waved at you from the stage with the biggest smile on his face once he caught sight of you, leaving you both embarrassed and amused.

But his third and biggest regret was realizing his feelings for you too late.

Now, Heeseung watched as your boyfriend wrapped you into a hug right after the ceremony ended, embracing you with the proudest smile on his face. Your group of friends cheered and whistled as you two shared a kiss, and Heeseung felt his heart twinge in his chest, wishing he was the one at your side in that very moment.

“They’re going to get married, for sure,” Jake blurted out, sighing in adoration as he too, watched you with a light smile on his face. Heeseung could only swallow the lump beginning to form in his throat, trying his best to muster up a smile.

“Yeah,” he replied, the bittersweet feeling of that moment settling in his chest.

A silence hung between them as Heeseung finally realized a truth he couldn't outrun: some things, no matter how much you wished, couldn't be made up for with persistence or a charmingly perfect smile.

And as the crowd dispersed, leaving him standing there with only his regrets for company, he understood that sometimes, being late meant missing out on the one thing you wanted most.

He was just too late.

“It says what?”

A sigh left Sunoo’s lips as he leaned closer to the counter. He held out his wrist toward Jungwon and dragged his finger across the words imprinted on his skin, although Jungwon couldn’t see them. Jungwon narrowed his eyes in concentration, a frown pulling at the corners of his lips when he couldn’t see what his best friend was trying to show him.

He tilted his head to the side in uncertainty as he straightened his posture. “I’m sorry, Sun. I wish I could see it,” Jungwon shrugged.

Sunoo let out a heavy sigh as he rolled his sleeve back down his arm, a pout forming on his pink lips. “This whole soulmate thing sucks,” he groaned, leaning forward as he folded his arms onto the counter in front of him, burying his head into them.

Jungwon just hummed in agreement, adjusting his apron before getting back to work behind the counter. “Isn’t it funny though?” He asked, earning nothing but silence from his friend.

“What kind of situation would you have to be in for those words to be the first thing your soulmate says to you?” Jungwon mused as he picked up a glass, pondering over the words Sunoo claimed to be written on his wrist. 

The pink-haired male lifted his head from his hunched position, placing his chin onto his forearm. “I have no idea,” he replied, eyes lowered and bottom lip jutted out in disappointment.

Jungwon smirked. “Let’s hope you’re not getting caught doing anything illegal when you first meet your soulmate,” he quipped, shooting his best friend a sympathetic smile before reaching beside him to grab another empty glass. Sunoo let out a sound that sounded like something between a hum and a sigh, ignoring Jungwon and the heaviness that was beginning to settle in his chest.

A silence soon fell upon the pair as Jungwon continued to clean glasses, Sunoo sending him a glance every now and then. His eyes then fell onto a spot on Jungwon’s neck, where the male had mentioned his soulmate mark was. Sunoo leaned a little closer to get a better look, but just like all the other times, he was only met with Jungwon’s bare skin.

“I feel like I would feel so much more at ease if I was able to see everyone else’s soulmate marks,” Sunoo explained as he sat straight, breaking the silence between them. “That way I know I’m not going crazy and that the words are actually there.”

Jungwon let out an amused scoff at his friend, placing the glass he was holding onto the counter before leaning backwards and crossing his arms over his chest. “I can assure you, Sunoo, my mark is there.”

Sunoo pursed his lips as he nodded slowly. “Okay.”

Jungwon just shook his head before gently patting the pink-haired boy’s shoulder, heading towards the back to complete another task, leaving Sunoo alone with his thoughts.

After he left, Sunoo began to sip on the strawberry milkshake Jungwon had made for him a few minutes prior, failing to notice his blazer beginning to slide off the unoccupied stool beside him. It was only at the last second he finally realized when he saw it slipping in the corner of his eye.

Before he could reach out and grab it, another pair of hands shot out, catching it just before it touched the floor.

Sunoo let out a small sigh of relief as he watched you handle his blazer with care, neatly folding it with a small smile on your face.

As soon as you turned to face him, your eyes instantly darted to his bright pink hair.

“Is that allowed?”

The male could only give you a look of confusion. 

“What is?”

Sunoo watched as your eyes widened at his response, continuing to look at you with a puzzled expression, unable to determine why you were so surprised.

And then it hit him.

You had just said the three words etched on his wrist.

Sunoo felt his breath get caught in his throat as he stared back at you with the same astonishment, unsure of what to say in that moment. The two of you continued to gaze at each other for what felt like hours in complete silence, minds turning and hearts beating at a rapid pace.

It was only when you both began to feel a tingling sensation on your wrists did you finally move, scrunching and rolling your sleeves up in a rushed manner. 

You both immediately froze when you saw the words inked on the other’s wrist.

Sunoo gulped when you shifted closer to him after a few seconds, stretching out your arm to get a better look at your soulmate marks. His mouth fell slightly agape when he read the words that had just come out of his mouth, delicately written across your skin.

An overwhelming feeling washed over him as you met eyes, and he soon found himself unable to tear his gaze away from your face.

You were his soulmate.

And he was yours.

HEESEUNG — makes fun of you throughout the whole thing.

we already know heeseung, he’s a huge tease. as soon as your hands grip onto the steering wheel, he’s already making fun of you. mans is laughing throughout the entirety of the drive, only occasionally giving you tips. he’s especially cackling when you accidentally hit the curb stop.

“i have never seen anyone this bad at driving.”

JAY — the quiet observer.

probably the most patient one out of everyone. sits quietly in the passenger’s seat while you drive. mumbles a “good job” when you do something right and confidently takes hold of the steering wheel when you start to panic and don’t know what to do. is surprisingly calm when you park the car, which scares you a little.

“not too bad.”

JAKE — extremely supportive.

is cheering you on from the passenger’s seat. he’s hyping you up for hours. gets very excited when you park correctly for the first time. even when you accidentally do something wrong, jake is super supportive and assures you that it’s okay. his constant energy amazes you, and you do your best to not let his efforts go to waste.

“see, i knew you could do it!”

SUNGHOON — worries too much.

as soon as you step on the pedal, he’s already a nervous wreck. sits stiff in the passenger’s seat while you drive. acts like a drama king when you step on the brakes too hard (according to him). is screaming bloody murder for his life when you make a mistake, and you have to tell him to shut up so you can concentrate and get it right.

“no!! i’m too handsome to die!!!”

SUNOO — the thorough explainer.

is really good at explaining how to maneuver the car. stays calm while you drive, never missing his cue on when to tell you to slow down or come to a stop. he makes driving seem like a piece of cake, and that’s exactly how it feels like when he’s the one teaching you. has a small smile on his face when he sees you driving with ease.

“i told you it would be easy.”

JUNGWON — stresses caution while driving.

emphasizes safety and is constantly reminding you to be careful while you drive. more worried about you than himself. is glancing at you from time to time to make sure you’re okay. hovers a little, but it’s more endearing than annoying. holds his arm out in front of you when you have to hit the brakes unexpectedly because he wants you to be safe.

“please, please, please be careful.”

NI-KI — a little reckless.

this man literally does not care. if the light turns yellow, he’s yelling at you to go faster despite your protests. if you run into a car waiting to turn into the road you’re driving on, he’s telling you to pass them. will not hesitate to make some rash decisions. however, you still follow the road laws and keep him in check, leaving him huffing and puffing in the passenger’s seat.

“what are you doing? go!!!”
