heeseung would never truly make his distress known in any circumstance. but if he wanted to tell someone… if he were desperate enough to get it off his chest, you would be the first person he ran to.
"do you really want me to tell you?" he mumbled.
you paused. your gaze faltering to his lips before you swallowed, looking away with a sharp exhale. it was brief, but he caught it and scoffed.
there was absolutely no way he could actually tell you, especially now—even if he would've liked to.
you two were similar in the fact that it was excruciatingly difficult to verbalize what you were feeling when the emotions got too serious. the both of you had this nonverbal mutual agreement to never pry if something felt off. though heeseung would break that rule quite frequently because he hated seeing you in a bad mood. but you… you stuck to it like an oath.
even now.
even with heeseung offering himself to you on a silver platter.
"heeseung…" you whispered, with no purpose apart from feeling the familiarity of the shape of his name against your lips as your shoulders drooped.
and then there was nothing.
you and heeseung sat in silence. the only sound that could be heard was the light patter of the rain against the canopy of the bench. glimpses of your younger selves running and jumping around the playground flashed through his mind. you two used to be such a mess. though now, the mess was no longer just soggy mud on brand new shoes.
you came home for spring break despite sunghoon's persistent attempts to keep you with him. and although you wished to spend every single second with him, you hadn't seen your family in a while.
"it's just a week." you said to sunghoon, who could barely rip himself away from your embrace.
you compromised by calling him every night before going to bed. and even when you did absolutely nothing, sunghoon still needed to hear your voice.
what you didn't know was that heeseung came home too. he came back for space. to clear his clouded mind. because that was nearly physically impossible for him to do with you constantly in his presence.
but here you were.
again.
"are you cold?" heeseung said, reaching for the sleeve of your sweatshirt soaked from the leaking canopy. "you're getting wet—"
a smile escaped you before you could stop it. and it was the first time he didn't avoid meeting your eyes in months.
"—don't… don't make it weird." he let out a soft laugh with a kind of sincerity you hadn't heard from him in a while.
he stretched your arm closer to him, pulling a small rag out of his coat to pat the spot dry.
"it's not gonna work," you taunted.
"it's literally working though."
"yeah, barely."
"just shut up," he scoffed.
"why do you even have that with you?"
"old habit," his grip on you slackened, "i guess."
when you were kids, he'd have bandages, a tube of healing ointment, a pack of wipes, and a rag stored somewhere on his person whenever you guys went to the playground. he had these cargo shorts he wore everywhere, with numerous pockets to hold all the necessities. because for some reason, you'd always end up falling in dirt, or bruising your knee. and he wanted to be the one to fix everything for you.
even as you grew older, heeseung continued to take care of you. even just a year ago, you and chaewon dragged him and anton to a night out in the city. you were adamant about walking for miles in these heels that literally bore into your flesh.
chaewon tried to convince you to wear flats but you didn't listen. and then after two hours of walking, you finally caved and told them your feet rubbed raw frim the straps. anton offered to carry you on his back as you sat down, groaning in agony. you refused, knowing that would just end up with you both on the ground because the only workout anton ever did was typing.
and instead of adding on to chaewon's 'i told you so's, heeseung pulled the very flats she told you to wear out of the sides of his socks, under the legs of his pants.
"bro, you've had these the entire time?" you yelled at him, causing side glances and murmurs from people passing by. "and didn't fucking tell me!"
"shut up," he grumbled, ignoring the small gasps from chaewon and anton as he knelt in front of you. he slipped off your heels, bandaged the bruises on your feet, and put the flats on for you. "there. now stop complaining."
heeseung, your personal brooding knight in shining armor.
you nudged him out of his thoughts, pointing to the kids playing in the rain. "where are their parents?" their giggles sent an uneasiness down heeseung’s spine. "it's literally raining."
they reminded him of you. everything reminded him of you.
"like that wasn't you a few years ago," heeseung joked, sliding his coat off and putting it over your shoulders.
"a few years? bro, that was like, way over a decade ago," and you pulled his coat tighter around your body.
over a decade and it was still consistently plaguing heeseung's mind. over a decade and he still couldn't get over it.
maybe it was jealousy?
well no, not maybe. it was most definetly jealousy. that he could admit to himself at least. and maybe that jealousy was also mixed with the fear of being replaced because you didn't seem to need him anymore.
"you know, my mom still calls you my protector, heeseung," you said so softly that if he wasn't already tuned into you he wouldn't have heard you over the rain.
the quiet between sentences didn't feel awkward, just heavy and stifled.
"really?" heeseung softly smiled to himself. at least someone in the world believed you still needed him despite the outgrown fantasy.
"yeah, she's ridiculous," you laughed, turning your body so you two were face to face. "she wants to see you actually."
heeseung swallowed, heart beating a bit faster. his eyes followed your hands as you reached for his.
it's an old habit. he told himself, as if he didn't physically feel each goosebump on his body raise at under your contact. a strand of your hair fell in front of your face. and he should've held himself back but he didn't, carefully using the hand you weren't holding to tuck the strand behind your ear. it was muscle memory.
"she wanted to ask if you approved…" you gently traced the outlines of his fingers and he blinked rapidly, feeling your lingering touch in every nerve of his body. "…of sunghoon."
right.
sunghoon.
how could he have forgotten.
"why does it matter what i think of him?"
but it meant everything to you though. and to your mom, apparently.
"um… i kinda told her i broke up with all the other boyfriends 'cause you didn't like them," you winced, peeking at him through one eye. "please don't hate me."
what the fuck?
"me?" disbelief was heavily laced in his tone. "i didn't approve? dude… when did i ever say anything about any of them? now your mom probably thinks i'm some insane guy controlling her daughter. she probably hates— holy shit— why would you say that to her?"
"no, hee, she loves you. probably loves you more than me actually," you giggled, "you're a good judge of character… and she likes that you're picky about people."
i'm not picky, i just don't want anyone to be with you.

there it was. again. and that was definitely something he shouldn't say out loud.
what did heeseung think of sunghoon?
well, there was a brief moment where he thought maybe time would be an advantage. heeseung had known you for years while sunghoon only had a few months to compete with. but if time was really the advantage that would mean heeseung would've already had the upper hand.
and he didn't. he never did. because he never said anything.
sunghoon was everything heeseung wasn't.
sunghoon would've told you the very second he started to feel things, even if he didn't understand what exactly he was feeling. sunghoon wouldn't have believed space from you would magically fix his state of mind. sunghoon would’ve never shut down, much less shut you out. and sunghoon would've never left anything unsaid.
"did you really break up with them because of me?"
the back of your throat stung, and you blinked hard before answering him, “i did. yes."
heeseung's breathing staggered. he squeezed his eyes tightly before looking up to meet your gaze. and although he seemed to have gained some composure, the second he saw your face, he grimaced at the tear running down your cheek. you heard him draw in a breath while his eyes examined your expression for any telltale signs of discomfort. his eyebrows furrowed, fingers almost twitching towards you, but for the first time, he held himself back from reaching out to comfort you.
"why?"
you choked at his directness and your gaze quickly dropped to your distorted reflection held in the puddle, contemplating how honest he wanted you to be. “i mean…” you trailed off. and your face grew hot because you could almost physically feel his eyes boring into the side of your face. though you couldn’t bear to look at him in this moment. "i've never liked anyone," you sniffled, using the back of your sleeve to wipe your nose, "…more than i like you."
heeseung swallowed the forming lump in his throat and his entire body went limp. and you had almost forgotten you were clutching his fingers until your palms soon felt cold as his warmth slipped away from your grasp. still, you couldn’t find the strength to look at him even after the shaky breath he let out.
you were such a confusing person. an unsolvable puzzle. it was one of the things he used to hate about you. and he felt so stupid because for one brief moment, he was met with a flicker of hope before he pulled his hand away. but the thing was, heeseung now had you figured out. he knew you said things in ways that could come off meaning something much stronger than what you truly intended. you telling everyone you were in love with him a lifetime ago being the first.
i’ve never liked anyone more than i like you.
you had a weird way with words. a way that made it feel like heeseung’s heart had been swallowed, so that his stomach could be turned inside out to be put on display, solely for you. yet, even if he had gotten on his knees and held up his bleeding heart as a sacrifice for you… you would’ve looked away and would’ve never seen it. because you’ve never seen heeseung. not in the same way he sees you. he knew that now. he knew you almost too well despite sometimes wishing he didn’t know you at all.
heeseung sighed into the silence, shifting to a more comfortable postion.
"but sunghoon?"
"he's different," a smile grew on your face as you sniffed, "he's like… i find myself feeling things with him i've never felt before." you glanced at heeseung briefly and he nodded, urging you to continue. "he's the complete opposite of me in a way. i really like that. and he makes me feel good about myself. i kinda like that makes me feel nervous? i— is that weird?"
"no." heeseung let out a small chuckle. "i don't think so." it was like the light in your eyes was immediately switched on the moment you started talking about him. but the light didn’t break him this time.
"and it's like i finally understand why people don't dread being with their partner."
"you're telling me you dreaded the ones before?"
"i mean yeah, i didn't like them."
heeseung's face contorted in disbelief and you shoved his shoulder lightly, "don't even look at me like that. heeseung. bro, they were so fucking insufferable," you deadpanned.
"you're literally insane."
heeseung smiled to himself. your 'craziness' was one of the traits he loved most about you. and he could only dream of experiencing it in the way only sunghoon ever will.
it wouldn't be fair to make you choose between the two. it wasn't something heeseung would actually make you do but how could he not think about it? it was a selfish thought that was consistently pushed down but brought right back up again whenever heeseung saw how you looked at sunghoon as if he created earth just for you. or when he remembered the image of sunghoon's hands roaming all over your body—the thing that forced heeseung to face the reality of it all. it left a sour taste in his mouth. and more often than he'd like to admit, he wondered what would it feel like to take sunghoon’s place.
but heeseung wasn't yours. and you weren’t his.
deep down he knew sunghoon was the type of person you needed to be with. someone who was nothing like himself. and he was fully aware that even if he did give you an ultimatum, and even if you did choose him, that wouldn't necessarily mean that he would have you in the way sunghoon has you. that’s not to say it didn’t hurt to come to terms with. but he had to check something. for his own.
his head hung low. "if i asked you," he hesitated, chewing on the inside of his cheeks.
should he really even be saying this?
"to break up with him… would you do it?" heeseung's teeth were clenched and his body felt like he was dropped straight into a firepit. a stark contrast to the biting cold under the rain.
your eyebrows shot up immediately. "what… i don't—" you stammered, your fidgeting hands frozen and intertwined with his.
it was a valid question though. by heeseung's logic at least. because he needed to know if it was worth keeping to himself. if it was worth pushing down again.
"—no. i wouldn't."
and those were the exact words he needed to hear.
"good."
"i really do like sunghoon," you whispered, leaning your head against heeseung's shoulder.
"yeah?" his arm wrapped around your shoulder to shield you from the leak above.
"yeah, i do."
"well then, i'm happy for you." he meant it wholeheartedly.
“i love you, heeseung. always.”
he inhaled shrarply, pushing aside his last bit of pride. "i love you too."
if heeseung had told sunghoon he liked you, would that have changed the way things turned out?
maybe it would've changed a lot of things.
but it was too little, too late.
because sunghoon was perfect for you. and heeseung couldn’t fight perfect.

I just read this, and i have so much clarity about everything that’s going on in casually. i also think this made me realise im actually on team heeseung purely because sunghoon is too good for yn, heeseung and yn are toxic for eachother but deserve each other atp with the way they’re acting. Sunghoon needs to leave the love triangle ASAP bc he’s being fcked over soooo bad rn😭 he’s got the short end of the stick everytime.
sunghoon is flawed but he works on it, and takes criticism to work on it shortcomings. whereas heeseung doubles down whenever he knows he’s in the wrong and yn does not careeeee she doesn’t want to be saved from him.

yes ofcc you’re very welcome !!! it’s been long overdue😖. i think it was a pretty perfect ending for them too (if i do say so myself😹). and i agree, it wasn’t as angsty as i had initially planned it to be. part two probably held the most angst of the story in my opinion. but given the nature of the JLB universe, i had to consider heeseung’s future official smau (as don’t make it weird is just a side story). plus… i honestly didn’t want to have to like… remediate (?) this situation in the future (bc if it ended on a more angsty note, i fear his future would’ve been so very messy😭). having it end like this makes it easier to deal with if that makes sense. plus i wanted to show that he truly does values the close bonded friendship he has with yn (and sunghoon as well) despite his romantic feelings. and it exhibits the growth yn went through as well by not letting heeseung’s feelings deter her away from who she really wants!

hihi enova, despite everyone choosing sides for casually i just wanted to say how i think you’ve written the characters beautifully. i love how none of the main characters have no flaws because it makes the story feel so real and raw. i know that lowkey makes me sound so corny but it’s genuinely so good to see because i feel like I’m always going through turmoil reading casually.
i was thinking about how most people are on heeseung’s side and rooting for him to get the girl, and i see why that is the case. however, i was thinking about it on a deeper level because i truly believe that yn cannot let go of heeseung because of the way he gives her false hope every time and it makes it harder for yn to let go and move on because she is wrapped up in her feelings so i honestly don’t blame her for that. For example, heeseung constantly flirts with her even after she was rejected and he gets jealous when she hangs out with other guys but then says she “deserves better” like their relationship is very push and pull where heeseung keeps her close enough but pushes away when it’s real and I find that extremely toxic and irl if this happens i wouldn’t want to stay in that constant cycle. i do understand that heeseung has insecurities or sumn idk that made him reject her even tho he liked her (??? math not mathing but wtv😭) but I don’t think that’s a valid excuse to your behaviour like it can explain it but not excuse it so i’m unsure if heeseung is the best person to be in a relationship with because if this is how he is now, who knows how he’ll be IN the relationship. Like if they ever got into an argument i feel like they will never be able to communicate with each other and he will just get defensive about everything even if he’s in the wrong? Idk if you get me.
However, thats not to say sunghoon is the better choice ngl because whilst heeseung is playing with her feelings sunghoon is honestly kinda shitty too ngl 😭. sunghoon legit slut shamed her for hanging out with heeseung, i was genuinely appalled. although people may excuse it bc she said his name during s*x that does not mean shit to me bro, like all that’s telling me is your just as insecure with urself than heeseung and you don’t know how to communicate properly because how do you go from 0 to 100 like that. Ok time to talk about…..yn. I think she is also very flawed, but I don’t think she would’ve been this way if the boys didn’t put her in such a turmoil and I will stand by that. Yes she is messy, however she also has feelings and I feel like everyone kinda forgets that. I am not saying she’s perfect and does no wrong, believe me i think she needs to help herself by removing herself from the situation and sort out where her head is at. Like right now she’s moving crazy bc she’s jumping head first into every situation and not giving it a second thought. I think she acts the way she does to protect herself, and I’m not saying it’s correct and morally right but everyone (the 2 boys) is kinda expected something from her which is maybe why she feels like she needs to do something.
Ok everyone is gonna disagree with me here but I also think jungwon is a bit of an enabler to yns behaviour sometimes, and I know yn has her own brain to think and stuff and jungwons loyalty lies with yn so he should be like that. I am only saying this because I think although jungwon is one of the better characters and he does call out when yn is in the wrong, he does it in a really gentle way and they kinda go back to being jokey/playing about. They kinda brush it off or brush over it briefly and sometimes I don’t think yn actually understand the extent of how she’s behaving/the whole situation and how crazy it is.

ooouu i'm glad you brought this up actually. because looking back to the beginning of casually, most people hated heeseung's character and loved sunghoon's (lowkey had to nuke the man's character bruh bc it was almost unfair how unanimously everyone was split between the two😭... but this is back when i didn't really have a plan lol). but then when sunghoon messed up it was a complete switch yk. heeseung is still a deeply manipulative person (tho he has had some positive development). him toying with yn's feelings in the past was really not okay. literally so toxic. and i agree with you, it's the reason she could never fully let go. but at the same time it is also the reason she doesn't fully trust him with her feelings in present time. and i guess it kinda gives an explanation as to why she's not just immediately accepting of heeseung's now proclaimed feelings (even tho it's obviously reciprocated on her end lmao). and you're so right, all of his "reasons" for rejecting and acting a certain way towards yn only gives an explanation but it doesn't excuse his behavior.
YES sunghoon is deeply insecure and has a raging inferiority complex (which i've talked about a few times before). after yn said heeseung's name when the slept together and him going straight to sleep with yuna to make himself feel better. he absolutely acted on impulse instead of thinking or talking things through (LMAO i'm sorry, to this day idk how i came up with something so vile). but honestly, i think how he approached yn after literally seeing heeseung and her kissing shows his growth in character. and i think the main difference between him and heeseung (in regards to yn), is when sunghoon did what he did, he was thinking of how he felt, not how it would affect yn. whereas heeseung did things with the intention of hurting her. and also i fully get what you're saying with not thinking heeseung is the best person for her to be with... like realistically, neither him or sunghoon are secure relationship options. they both have their flaws and whoever she ends up with would have to do some serious work on themselves in order for relationship to healthily work out in the long run... yn also needs to work on herself lmaooo.
ohh regarding the timeline, sunghoon was not aware of heeseung's feelings for yn. i kind of explained it a bit in this ask. like the only person heeseung has told about his feelings for yn... is yn lmao (and that wasn't even until recently). i will add too that heehoon were friends way before they even met yn (they were friends since they were babies… this is kind of a spoiler. but not really lol). and then also heehoon both developed feelings for yn way before yn started having feelings for heeseung… so i wouldn't say that there was always a triangle going on. but idk… maybe in their heads lmaooo. i really do need to post a timeline fr for this all to make sense... i keep saying this but i've been procrastinating it.
i feel like this story would make so much more sense if it was written. bc there’s really only so much i can convey through text messages. i honestly thought i would’ve put more written pieces in this smau but i didn’t (mostly bc i got stuck on where to go with it in the middle). however, if it were fully written, it would quite literally be long as fuck😭… (i lowkey thinking of writing this entire thing over again in a non-smau format. it would lowkey be better given the type of story it is. i don’t know if i will ever end up actually doing that tho).
you're so right in saying yn is very flawed as well. though it might not have seemed that way in the beginning of the story. and actually, the purpose of jake's character was to slowly reveal all this !!! she is a problem just as much as sunghoon and heeseung. and she's not acting out of malicious intent. she's genuinely just confused and conflicted😭. but her actions affect people more than she thinks they do (this goes for heehoon as well).
i do see where you're coming from in regards to jungwon. but i don't necessarily think he's an enabler..? it's more so that he's coming to terms with the fact that he can only do so much to help her in a situation like this. she is a very defensive person and as it has been seen, she wasn't even completely honest with jungwon about a lot of things regarding her feelings. and he kinda brushes off her behavior bc he knows she'll deflect anyway. and my intention rn with his character is him lowkey giving up on trying to save her from herself yk? plus in this specific two-timing scenario, yn isn't really a 'victim' ... it's sunghoon honestly, which is why jungwon went to him and asked how he was doing. there's also a big difference in how jungwon spoke to sunghoon vs. how he spoke to yn after they did morally questionable (sunghoon sleeping w yuna + the slut shaming, and yn with her two-timing). but i'd say that sunghoon is more receptive of the criticism than yn is. which is why jungwon feels the need to be more "gentle" with her if that makes sense? but i do understand why it may seem like he's being an enabler of her behavior because he is more biased towards her than sunghoon.

i saw an ask about mixing characters up, here to say i mixed up the heeseung from nothing weird and the heeseung from casually 😭😭
i guess it can get a bit confusing since i'm updating multiple stories all at once hahaha. though casually heeseung is basically the devil in comparison to nothing weird (JLBU) heeseung LMFAOO. and just note that if it doesn't explicity say "the 'jungwon's litter box' universe" (or JLBU) near the top of the post then it's a completely unrelated story and not connected to that universe at all!
