God, A Catcher in the Rye is so annoying. Like, I get it’s supposed to be getting a message across more than polling or anything, but if all you’re trying to do is make a point, write an essay, not a novel. There’s no significant plot, so it’s not enjoyable to read, and it’s not even a “this is dull but it says some shit well” book because it doesn’t feel like it goes much deeper than themes of childhood and trauma and shit. Plus, the main character is whiny, annoying, and entitled, and sure he’s been through some trauma but you get the feeling he’d like this even if he hadn’t.

I really love how Frankenstein so interwoven with divinity yet nothing about it is inherently divine, just a really crude imitation of it…. Like the concept of a Creator and Creation indebted to the Creator should be holy by definition but here it’s the furthest thing from holiness. Instead of an omnipotent Creator that stamps things with “this is what’s good and bad” we have characters who face the ugly reality of their lived experiences, and from there the reader has to decide for themselves what the good and bad is

everyone in fantasy novels is horny on main for elves and it’s honestly a travesty like why the hell would you want to marry an elf you’ll just spend the rest of your days growing old in the woods with a bunch of immortal bastards whose heads are so far up their asses they think singing week-long ballads is prime entertainment and say shit like “thou” and “beseech” unironically y'all should be hooking up with dwarves who 1. actually know how to throw the fuck down and let loose at a party 2. will literally shower you in diamond dust and gold they mined and crafted with their bare hands and 3. can sling you over their shoulder like a sack of potatoes with their huge muscular arms developed from hours of said mining and crafting. there’s literally no contest.

ok I have given it a lot of thought & this is what I think:

- a muppets adaptation of pride & prejudice should be called ‘Muppets, Pride and Prejudice’ (comma mandatory)

(I did consider ‘Pride and Prejudice and Muppets’ but like that’s been done)

- Darcy & Elizabeth should be human actors playing it very straight. Kermit the Frog & Miss Piggy are Bingley & Jane.

- Gonzo & Rizzo reprise their role as narrator/greek chorus from Muppet Christmas Carol. this means the film can open w Gonzo very earnestly reciting the opening line 

(& then Rizzo being like ‘Gonzo what are you TALKING about’ and idk you could get a skit out of that whilst introducing the book and some of its context for younger viewers! it’d be good)

- major issue would be that Pride & Prejudice has a lot of women in it and there aren’t a lot of girl muppets unfortunately so all the men outside Darcy would have to be muppets in order for there to be enough muppet roles

- leaning towards Fozzie Bear for Mr Bennet. maybe Sam the Bald Eagle for Mr Collins? don’t know if any of the muppets are dickish enough to be plausible as Wickham so maybe he’d have to be a human man idk

But also I facepalmed at the thought of Miss Piggy as Jane.. can you imagine. Surely, she’d be a better Lydia… I think Muppets, Pride and Prejudice would get about halfway through the story and then go WAY OFF THE RAILS.

I confess, I’m not actually super knowledgeable about P&P, I just think the Muppets version should have a Kermit/Miss Piggy romance and given the pattern established by previous Muppet classics films they should be the beta couple

Miss Piggy would be great as a lot of P&P characters but unfortunately there are many of them and only one of her

Also she’d be funny as Jane in part BECAUSE she’s wildly unsuited to the part, but like, she’s miss piggy, she’s going to be Jane Bennet and no-one has the nerve to tell her no

I was thinking about all Darcy’s lines to Lizzy about how “I couldn’t tell if your sister even liked Bingley, she’s just that reserved I guess”, and there are two important takeaways:

Darcy would have to say them with a straight face while we, the audience, are watching flashbacks of Miss Piggy going absolutely WILD at the Netherfield Ball.

OR

Since Jane is the reserved Bennett sister, ALL of the younger Bennett sisters would have to go EVEN WILDER THAN MISS PIGGY.

Here’s how Macbeth should have proceeded after killing Duncan:

So, Duncan’s been killed, the princes flee, and Macbeth is king, but Banquo’s lineage is still destined to be king, presumably unavoidably. So, he should first have Banquo and his wife done away with in a “tragic accident” (I don’t morally condone this by any means, but for a conniving king who has no such qualms with murder, this would be the best way to control the situation).

Then, we will assume Macbeth is childless, as no child is ever mentioned. When Banquo is pronounced dead, Macbeth and his lady must put on an excellent show of mourning, be super sad about it, etc, and then very graciously say they will adopt their dear friend Banquo’s orphaned son and raise him as their own. This puts Macbeth in charge of how things will proceed while still technically keeping the prophecy intact so he doesn’t incur fate’s wrath.

Presuming Macbeth can live with the crushing guilt and not go mad (a tall order), he should immediately pass decrees popular with both the nobility and the peasantry. Macbeth is already established as a good soldier and war hero, and this will cement his popularity. He should also make himself known as a king who performs genuinely good deeds—giving out lavish alms, helping widows, seeing his people—stuff that gives people an immediate sense of his character.

All the while, he should be giving the murderers regular payments. This would hopefully buy their silence, but should they ever decide to speak up about the crime, his established good character and popularity across the country will allow him to easily discredit them and their believers. Even if this whole affair could be done without killing Banquo, the popularity and good character will also secure his power should the princes ever try to reclaim *their* throne, as people would want to support such a popular ruler.

This would ensure Macbeth maintains a secure reign for as long as he is alive. Then, when he finally dies and Fleance (Banquo’s son) takes power, the prophecy is satisfied but Macbeth has carried out his full kinghood.

Is it immoral? Fucked up? Full of trickery? Absolutely! But it’s also smarter than the path Macbeth did take

Marathi Word of the Day

किल्ली

[killī], noun (feminine), plural किल्ल्या [killyā]

key

गाडीची किल्ली तुझ्याकडे आहे का? gāḍīcī killī tujhyākaḍe āhe kā

Do you have the car key?

Note: This word was brought to my attention by @hunterswearingplaid, who noticed I previously used the word चावी [cāvī] for ‘key’. From our research, it seems that both words are about equally well-used in Marathi.

Of these, चावी is likely a loanword from Hindi-Urdu and more common in places like Mumbai, while किल्ली is the more “Marathi” word, and may be more common in places like Pune.

You can’t go wrong with either word when you want to refer to a key!

I did some extra research on the etymology of these words! Thanks to Krishnaji Pandurang Kulkarni’s etymology dictionary, which is the only one of its kind to exist for Marathi, to my knowledge.

It seems that चावी comes from the Portuguese word ‘chave’. It makes sense then, that this word would be used more commonly along the coastal regions of Maharashtra, which had greater contact with the Portuguese.

किल्ली on the other hand comes from the Sanskrit word ‘कील’ [kīla].

I loved looking up the etymology for this, so I’ll try and include word origins for future Word of the Day entries!

​Hey guys there’s a new Marathi langblr called @survivetoread​ and they just got started.

I know the “Indo” part of the Indo-European family is LARGELY neglected in the langblr community, so if some of you are looking for something a little different to study maybe give Marathi a try! And it shouldn’t be too hard to pick up for those of you who are used to other Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi/Udru or Bengali. Also, like its cousins, it sounds very pretty and is written in a beautiful script, and boasts an extensively rich history and culture.

Bonus points: it is a generally open language, and yet isn’t given much attention! So new learners are more than welcome, you’ll be learning a language that not many people (outside of India/Marathi diaspora) know, and you won’t be stepping on the toes of closed communities!

Ways to to be patient with yourself during COVID-19:

A lot of stuff is saying to try to be kind to yourself during the pandemic, but it isn’t always clear on what that looks like for students etc who have to keep doing academic work during all this, so here’s my personal ideas:

Some assignments/ tasks will take longer than usual because it’s hard to be motivated and focused. This is okay, and a normal response to the situation. Ask for an extension if you need it.

Self-care looks different right now. It’s about getting you through the next day or two, not creating good habits for the long term, because the long-term feels really uncertain right now and your brain is focusing on surviving the short term.

Set yourself super small goals that you can actually achieve, because it will feel less overwhelming and help motivate you more because you’ll not feel “unproductive”

In school, prioritize big assignments that you need to pass over smaller ones if you have to choose one to work on for a day.

Ask for help. Exetensions on assignments. Explain your circumstances— most professors aren’t out to have you fail right now. Most of your peers are also struggling.

With assignments, something is better than nothing, late is better than never.

Remember that it’s okay to struggle, it’s okay to struggle with things more than usual, and that beating yourself up over it is only going to make things worse.

Avoid toxic productivity culture. Motivation should never be based on threat of failure or loss of self-worth.

Find what inspires you to keep going. There is no “failure” or “not being/doing enough” right now. The idea is to do what you can, if you can.
