❝ No… uhh… I wasn’t-I wasn’t bragging. I just got a lot of odd jobs. ❞
❝ Waiter, driver, carpenter, model and then soldier. Can I ask you something?❞
"I didn't think you were. It's just pretty impressive."
"--Um, yeah. Sure. Go for it."
[ Nathan smiled a little - he was, of course, happy for his ‘sister’. His phone chimed. ]
“It’s a big responsibility. I just hope she’s ready for it.”
[ Nathan had no children, the thought had crossed his mind - but, that was when he was much younger. Nowadays, he had to look out for his own family, and couldn’t dream of starting his own. ]
” I’m glad that you have such a kind overseer.” [ He rose an eyebrow at her request ] “Ice cream? I suppose I can arrange that. Shall we?”
[ And he, due to old habits and proper raising from his family so meany eons ago — offered her his arm to take. ]
[ Kate nodded in agreement, knowing well enough that raising children is never easy. Her parents had a huge struggle with her and her brother, and they did an amazing job. That couldn't be anything less than challenging. ]
"I bet she'll be a great mom. --That's probably irrelevant, seeing as I don't know anything about her, but... Y'know."
[ With a shrug, she offered a friendly smile and, moving on, waved to her so-called overseer. ]
"Yes. We shall."
[ With a slightly bemused expression toying at her lips, she took his arm. ]
"----You do like ice cream, don't you?"

“I’m Chancelit, by the way.”
[ It was their mini-vacation anyway before they get pulled in Afghan… again. God, sometimes he wonders what’s wrong with that country and why is the President still forcing Democracy on them if they didn’t want it? Lots of people die… and they’re mostly civilians… ]
“I just turned twenty-eight last month. Uh… I worked for the Green Berets…. I was a former model and uh… your turn.”
"Nice to meet you. I'm Kate."
[ She nodded as he spoke, her smile slowly growing with the more he said. Getting to know little - or big - things about people was something she'd never take for granted. It was oddly special to let people into your life like that. ]
"Oh, um, alright... I turned thirty-two in April, I am a waitress at Marello's Diner, and I was definitely never a model."
[ The angel was silent as she spoke. —- His eyes widened when she explained what happened, and he tried to hide his concern, but he couldn’t. It seemed like she was going through a lot, and he was angry at himself for being upset about her forgetting about him. —- About their friendship. ]
”Wow..”
[ He could only gape, and stare at the ground. —- He felt guilty. So, guilty. ]
“I’m sorry for pressuring you to come over here, and see me…I had no idea that you were going through something like that…”
[ His voice cracks, and he sighs. ]
”I’m sorry.”
[ This as the exact reaction she hadn't wanted. Sure, there were worse things he could say or do, but not by much. This kind of response when she told people about her condition... It made her feel like she wasn't normal. She knew she wasn't, but she didn't need to be reminded. ]
"No, don't --don't do that. Please. I'm okay."
[ She'll offer a friendly smile, though it's less bright and warm than usual; almost forced. ]
"Don't apologize. It's not your fault; you didn't know. I.. Should probably be saying sorry, really. I shouldn't have just jumped to deciding that I was going to break everything off."
[ For her - yes - he imagined it must be exciting. For him - he was worried, of course he was worried, but that wasn’t something he could share with anyone. So - Nathan did what he practiced for decades. He faked a smile ]
“Thank you, she is, quite understandably, exploding with joy.”
[ When she mentioned that she wasn’t busy, that his company and their lunch would be the perfect excuse to escape her job - that’s when Nathan smiled genuinely. ]
“A food truck ?”
[ He raised an eyebrow - not understanding what seemed to be a joke. ]
“Well, I’ll take you wherever you wish to go. If you need some time to tell your boss or — I don’t mind waiting.”
[ He shrugged, glancing over at the man Kate was having trouble with when he first arrived. Something about the man he did not like - but it could simply be because he was being rude. ]
"I can imagine."
[ Kate had always, for as long as she could remember, wanted to be a mother --to have a family. When she was a little girl and people asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would always answer with "a mommy," without fail. With the deal life's thrown at her lately, though, she knows it can't be that easy. ]
"I mean, somewhere other than a food truck would be nice, but... Y'know."
[ She shrugged, still smiling as she often was, and glanced at the back of the diner, where her boss would have been behind the swinging door. ]
"He'll know I took my break - he's pretty lenient, really. --I actually do have one request, about where we go. Can it be somewhere with ice cream?'

“I live to serve my country, ma’am. It’s all right.”
[ He felt a little bit giddy for getting appreciated, even though if it was from a stranger. He was mostly called a cold-blooded murderer or a no-brain soldier by the media. This was a nice change. ]
“I’m sorry for keeping you. You-you had to go be somewhere?”
"Oh, don't be humble. You're not getting off that easy."
[ As far as she knew, she didn't have anywhere to be --which wasn't always such a good indication of her schedule-- so she was happy enough to stay and talk to him, if he didn't have anywhere to be, either. ]
"Actually, no. Not as far as I can remember. --If you're not busy, I'd be happy to grab a coffee and keep up the conversation, if.. That's not a really weird offer."

"--This one, you mean?"
[ She'll pull an iPhone that fits the description he gave her out of her bag, holding it out so he can take it if it's the one he's looking for. ]
❝I’ve got no social life, so I practically live on the couch which— pretty much answers your question without me having to vocalize it.❞
"I envy you. I can't seem to find a minute to settle down, really."
