The Barbaric Murder & Dismemberment of Robert Beckowitz:

July of 1982: The city of Detroit would undergo one of the most gruesome murder cases to date. Robert Beckowitz was sitting with his girlfriend, Jeannine Clark, peacefully watching television until his friend James Edward Glover crept up from behind and shot him in the head. Clark and Glover spent the next three days mutilating the body of Beckowitz while ingesting large quantities of illegal narcotics. They both took photos of themselves cutting the body with hacksaws and posing the body in various demanding/sexually exploitive positions while nude. By the end of the relentless mutilation, Beckowitz’ limbs had been removed from his body, including his head, and had over 80-100 stab wounds. However, Jeannine Clark contacted the police and explained to them what happened to her boyfriend. According to Clark, she was held captive by Glover, forced to consume drugs and participate in the mutilation, which she unwillingly complied with. Despite Clark’s statement, the pictures authorities discovered painted a vastly different picture of how the homicide transpired. In addition, a few eyewitnesses gave information to the local newspaper stating that they saw Clark leave her home numerous times by herself, and once more where she purportedly went to a store to purchase film for the camera. During trail, Glover pleaded not guilty to the crime but later admitted to holding Clark captive and was granted a plea deal: A 30-50 year prison sentence. As for Clark’s fate, she was found guilty of mutilation of a corpse and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

It’s not often that serial killers turn themselves in, as most lack remorse for their crimes. This wasn’t the case, however, with Wayne Adam Ford, a serial killer from California who walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff Department with a victim’s severed breast in his pocket. He then calmly confessed to having killed four women in 1997 and 1998, but is thought to have killed more. Ford has been on death row since 2006, and is currently waiting for his date with death.

The Neuroscience of Aggression

What could be the cause of inexplicable acts of violence committed by serial, spree, and mass murderers? In addition to environmental and sociological factors, extensive research has been conducted on the biological and neurological factors of overt aggression.

Evidence has been found through extensive research on animals, that the neurotransmitter, serotonin, plays a key role in regulating aggression. When selective serotonin transmitters were knocked out in mice and monkeys, both animals displayed a significant increase in aggression, and decrease in peaceable interactions such as grooming. A decrease in serotonin has also shown to play a key role in human aggression as well. Pharmacological interventions which augment the brain’s use of serotonin has displayed a decrease in hostile behavior. In addition, some people with a history of violent behavior, such as arsonists, criminals, and suicide victims, show low levels of serotonin in their cerebral spinal fluid.

Another cause of aggression could be linked to the limbic system, which is comprised of a complex set of structures that lies on both sides and underneath the thalamus, just under the cerebrum. It includes the hypothalamus, the hippocampus, and the amygdala.

The amygdala, in particular, plays an important role in the neurological factors of aggression. Upon conducting research on animals through electrically stimulating the amygdala, it has been found that the animals increased in aggression significantly. Before spree killer, Charles Whitman murdered seventeen people at the University of Texas, left a note behind which begged people to examine his brain upon his death. His autopsy revealed a tumor pressing against his amygdala.

In addition, the cortical inhibitory mechanisms of the neurobiological system play a key role in regulating aggression. The prefrontal cortices, specifically the orbital prefrontal cortex and the ventral medial prefrontal cortex helps to inhibit limbic regions involved in the generation of aggression. They also effectively evaluate charged stimuli and signaling other critical nodes.

Forensic Investigations: Eyewitness Accounts

One of the most unreliable forms of evidence is the eyewitness statement. There are many factors which lead to a false eyewitness account, they are

Unconscious transference-This refers to the generation of memory which is related to an incident but is not relevant to it. For example, a store clerk who was robbed may mistakenly identify one of his regular costumers as the suspect.

Leading witnesses in lineups and cognitive interviews-Investigators who interview witnesses can help to contribute to false eyewitness accounts by not asking them properly formatted questions. Investigators are required to ask open-ended questions, for example, “describe what the suspect looked like,” instead of “did he have brown hair? Was he wearing glasses?” Police officers also have to be careful leading a witness during a lineup by body language, or an encouraging word. They must also reassure that the suspect may or may not even be in the lineup to ensure that they will not choose the wrong person.

False encoding-Encoding refers to the acquisition of information. Many aspects of a stimulus can effect how it’s encoded. As the complexity of an event increases, especially that of a violent crime, some portions of the event are bound to be wrongly remembered. Despite what myths may perpetuate, a stressful situation does not enhance the encoding of events.

Altered storage-Storage is the second step in building memory. Activities that eyewitnesses carry out or information they learn after they observe an event can alter their memory of the event. One of the failed efforts of Ted Bundy’s defense strategies was to discredit Nita Neary’s eyewitness testimony by saying her memory was altered by seeing newspapers about Bundy after the Chi Omega murders. Fortunately in Neary’s case, seeing those headlines did not modify her memory of the man she saw sneaking out of her sorority house.

What Is The Cause of Aggression and Violent Behavior?

In 1939, a group of psychologists from Yale University proposed that aggression was born from frustration. It should be stated that frustration does not always result in violence and aggression, and in turn, violence and aggression do not always stem from frustration. Frustration can trigger an already aggressive personality to explode into a violent outburst.

One of the main components of the criminological theory, the frustration-aggression hypothesis, is the concept that frustration and aggression is a result of thwarted goals and expectations. When the behavior directed at a specific goal is blocked, arousal increases, and the individual experiences a drive to act on it and reduce it. The responses which lead to a reduction in the arousal may become strengthened or reinforced over time.

One possible example of the result of the frustration-aggression hypothesis is Elliot Roger. He felt frustrated in many aspects of his life, specifically in his inability to obtain the type of girlfriend he wanted. When denied his dream, his frustration turned into aggression, which ultimately lead to violence, resulting in the death of six innocent individuals.

Age progression is the process of modifying a photograph to give the effect of ageing in appearance. It’s often used to aid the search of missing children. The artist scans the image of the child, and develops it using age-appropriate pictures of bloodline siblings and parents. Another way of adding family traits is using a drawing software. 

These images compare the age progression of missing children with actual photographs of them after they’ve been found.

Luminol is a chemical that can be used to show trace amounts of blood by creating a light producing chemical reaction when mixed with hemoglobin.

Luminol powder is mixed into a liquid containing hydrogen peroxide and other chemicals. This mixture will then be sprayed over the area that is being examined.

The reaction of the Luminol spray mixing with the iron in blood will then produce a blue glow that can be seen in a dark room.

Other substances that can accidentally have the same reaction with Luminol are: bleach, urine, faeces & horseradish.

Unfortunately Luminol can destroy other crime scene evidence so it is usually used after other options have been explored.

Correlation between head Injuries and Mass Murder

According to a new study in the journal Aggression and Violent Behavior, out of 239 eligible killers, 21.34% (N = 51) had had a definite or suspected head injury.

Also out of 106 killers with ASD and/or head injury 55% (N = 58) had experienced psychosocial stressors.

From Criminologist Dr Adrian Raine CAT Scaned 40+ convicted killers and compared them to “ordinary people” and found the result that the convicted killers have lower activity in the pre-frontal part of the brain.

The pre-frontal part of the brain explained by Goldman-Rakic is used in representational knowledge and is used to intelligently guide thought, action, and emotion, including the inhibition of inappropriate thoughts, distractions, actions, and feelings.

• Richard Ramirez “The Night Stalker” - When Ramirez was two, he had a dresser fall onto him which caused a laceration that required 30 stitches to fix. Also was knocked out by falling out of a swing which resulted in him having seizures into his teenage years and early adulthood.

• John Wayne Gacy “The Killer Clown” - Gacy was beaten unconscious by his father when he was 6 y/o. At 11, he was struck in the head with a swing which he did not go to the doctor over until he was 16. These events caused him to have constant black-outs.

• Dennis Rader “The BTK Killer” - As an infant, he was dropped by his mother and stop breathing. His mother never took him to the hospital for his injuries.

Seven Unsettling Jeffrey Dahmer Facts

Before he was a serial murderer, Dahmer was a serial rapist, going to bathhouses and giving men drinks laced with sleeping pills and then having sex with them once they fell unconscious.  Eventually, he was banned when men began to complain and a few of his victims became seriously ill.  Dahmer later explained his actions to officers as attempts to satisfy his urges to dominate other men “without hurting anyone.”

Ate Thanksgiving dinner with his family at his grandmother’s house as the corpse of his second victim Steven Toumi lay stuffed in a suitcase in the basement.  As soon as his family left the next day, Dahmer dismembered and disposed of the remains.

Told would-be last victim Tracy Edwards that he was going to cut his heart out and eat it.  Dahmer did consume the heart of one victim and described it as “kind of spongy,” and unappetizing.  Nevertheless, he found the experience erotic, getting an erection as he consumed the fried organ.

When officers entered Dahmer’s apartment to investigate what they assumed was a domestic incident after victim Konerak Sinthasomphone escaped into the streets, they noticed a strange odor.  It was the corpse of previous victim Tony Hughes decomposing in the bedroom, which one of the officers just barely glanced into before leaving.

On the night Dahmer was captured, officers found boxes of Soilex in his apartment.  Dahmer confessed that since he was being evicted, he’d been planning on dissolving all of the “mementos” he kept from his victims in the Soilex, effectively eradicating any physical trace of his crimes.  This means that if he hadn’t been arrested and managed to go on with his life without committing another murder, the rest of the world would have had no idea about the men who’d perished at his hands.

Was aroused by the sight of his victims’ viscera and would cut open their chests to ejaculate into their abdominal cavity.  In addition, he used the severed heads of his victims as masturbatory devices and sucked on their detached penises, one of which he painted white with foundation makeup.

In their last conversation before Dahmer left the army for alcoholism, acquaintance David Goss told him that the only thing he was proving with his discharge was that he was a loser.  The usually soft-spoken Dahmer immediately flew into a rage, advancing towards Goss and declaring in a raised voice, “That’s one thing I’ll tell you, Goss, is that I’m not a loser.  Someday you’ll hear from me.  You’ll see me again or you’ll read about me, but someday you will hear about me and you’ll know that I’m not a loser.”   It is unclear if Dahmer meant that he was going to actually make something of himself or if he was referring to the later murders he perhaps already envisioned himself committing.

In Australia, on a killing spree that lasted from 1989 until 1999, serial killer Kathleen Folbigg murdered four of her babies by suffocating them. Her first baby, Caleb, was barely a month old when he mysteriously died overnight. His death was attributed to ‘’sudden infant death syndrome’’. Kathleen gave birth two years later to a baby boy named Patrick, but he only lived to be eight months old when he mysteriously stopped breathing as well. The couple thereafter moved to Thornton, New South Wales, where they had a baby girl who died less than a year after she was born. They moved yet again and had another baby girl named Laura. Laura only lived to be 19 months. This all came to an end in 1999 when her husband came across her diary which detailed the killings. Kathleen was sentenced to 30 years and to this day maintains her innocence, insisting that her children had died from natural causes, a.k.a. ‘’sudden infant death syndrome’’.

13 year-old Nicole Lovell (pictured above on the left) disappeared from her family’s home in Blacksburg, Virginia after climbing out of her bedroom window during the early morning hours of January 27th, 2016. Prior to that morning, Nicole told her friends that she was planning to sneak out to meet up with her new 18 year-old boyfriend named David. This David was later identified as David Eisenhauer, (picture above, top right) an 18 year-old freshman at Virginia Tech.

Hours after Nicole climbed out of her bedroom window, her parents found her bedroom empty, her window open, and a drawer pushed up to her windowsill to help her climb outside. They immediately reported her missing. Investigators immediately began interviewing Nicole’s friends and neighbors. A few of those friends mentioned Nicole’s plan to meet up with an older boy named David. Three days later, David Eisenhauer was arrested. David admitted to meeting Nicole online and to driving to her home during the early morning hours of January 27th to meet up. He said that he believed Nicole was 16 or 17 years old, but when he saw her that morning, he realized she was much younger and decided to leave. Investigators did not buy this story, and charged David with Nicole’s abduction. Shortly thereafter, Nicole’s body was found on the side of the road near the Virginia/North Carolina border. She had been stabbed to death. David was then charged with murder in addition to abduction.

In a twist to an already tragic case, David later told investigators that he did not act alone. Fellow Virginia Tech freshman Natalie Keepers (pictured on the bottom right) allegedly helped David in both the planning of Nicole’s murder and the clean-up of Nicole’s body. Natalie was subsequently arrested and charged with being an accessory to a felony before the fact and with concealing a body. After searching Natalie’s dorm room, investigators found a Minions blanket that belonged to Nicole, covered in blood. When speaking to investigators, Natalie apparently referred to David as a sociopath, and to herself as a “sociopath in training.” She said the two of them became friends early on during their first semester of college, and that David approached her with a problem about a younger girl early on during the second semester. David apparently told her that he met Nicole at a party and thought she was 18, but found out that she was only 13 after having sex with her. David said that Nicole was threatening to expose their relationship, and as a result, David and Natalie came up with a plan for David to kill Nicole in order to keep the relationship a secret. After David went through with it, he originally left Nicole’s body hidden at Craig Creek Road. Then, he enlisted Natalie’s help in moving Nicole’s body, removing her clothing, wiping her body with Clorox wipes, and dumping her on the side of the road near the state’s border. When asked why she agreed to help David commit such a brutal act, Natalie told investigators that she was “excited to be a part of something special and secret.”

David is currently on trial for Nicole’s abduction and murder. Natalie is scheduled to go on trial later this year.
