There are some films about an impossible love which seem to affect people deeply and universally, and in the modern era there have been a few which I really love: Lost in Translation, Brokeback Mountain, Before Sunrise, Once, and Call Me By Your Name come to mind. Before all of these was David Lean’s poignant Brief Encounter.

What remains unsaid is sometimes the most powerful.
