I just read a fanfic where Arthur thought the line: “Out of all the people in the world, Merlin deserved to die the most.”

Which is hilarious, because it was one of the most touching sentences in the entire story.

I forgot I took a half day for doctors appointments. I’ll be in the waiting room for 2-3 hours today.

But my brain is stuck on this fandom (not even remotely my primary fandom), and I only have three other fics downloaded, all of which I’ve read within the past 3 months.

Getting older is realizing that the animation in American Dragon Season 2 was objectively not bad. In fact, most of it looked great.

They just made Jake too pointy and did the dragons dirty.

AU where Arthur finds out about the prophecy and pieces together that "his closest ally Emrys" must be Merlin because who else would it be, but incorrectly assumes that Merlin doesn't know and therefore has never practiced magic before.

Even better if he finds out early season 1 so He's just so devastated the entire time and he's just like "I can't believe this, this prophecy is going to turn my best friend into a sorcerer, and it's all my fault for being the once and future king" and Merlin's in the back just murdering a sidhe

I don't think people (and merlin) understand how powerful merlin is. And when I say powerful I don't mean in a magic sense, I mean in a political sense.

Just stop a little and think about it, by the latter seasons merlin holds the highest position between castle staff, he is the king's manservant for christ sake, he could order every single one of the castle staff to do his things for him cause he is under direct service of the king, just by this regard he already has the same amount of influence a, let's say, minor noble.

Bu HOO BOY, his influence doesn't just stop there because not only is he in the highest position in the castle staff, he also is a close friend and trusted advisor of : Pretty much all the knights, a good chunk of nobles and foreign royals, The royal physician, The freaking queen and last but not least he is best friends with the king. The amount of trust and power put in Merlin's hand is gigantic, if he truly desired he could influence and change most of the royal court with just a few words.

One of the episodes that best show this is servant of two masters, we all know the iconic scene of merlin walking in the armory and just straight up announcing he is going kill the king in front of one of the knights and then walking away, this shows the amount of trust everyone put on Merlin, were anyone else doing that they were probably going to jail for treason, but since it's merlin he walks away with a crossbow and a laugh.

Should merlin have at one point wanted to turn against Camelot he could destroy tbe entire kingdom from inside and not even be suspected of being the one doing it.

Merlin is in a perfect position to control the kingdom, if someone could control merlin they could just slowly destroy Camelot from the inside out.

Merlin's opinion on someone could also help or destroy their lives in court, if merlin doesn't like you then you bet your ass that he is telling his friend the king all about how much of a douche you are, if he likes you then you know he is telling the king how nice you are. Merlin's opinion on you could literally decide how the entirety of the court will treat you. Also if you have ever hurt merlin that's practically a death sentence, you will be hated by all of the royal court, the knights and servants, and you better know they are now committed to making your life a living hell.

Anyways, merlin is one of the single most important and influencial people in Camelot, and he doesn't even know about it because he is too much of an idiot to even realize this.

Merlin also has an excellent bullshitdar. Like half the time when he tells Arthur he has a “funny feeling” it has nothing to do with magic Merlin can just sense someone’s bullshit. So if someone does try to be fake nice to him to try to get in with Arthur, Merlin is more likely to go “there is something off with this guy I don’t trust him.”

Until I had read the original post, I never understood the significance of this line from Merlin in episode 5x04: “I’ll have someone show you to your room.” In other words, Merlin would instruct another servant to show “Hilda” to her room, rather than doing it himself. 

Here’s more proof from episode 4x11: Arthur tells Princess Mithian that Merlin is the one who can arrange a tour of the citadel. Arthur then says that some of the buildings are several hundred years old. Now, if Merlin is the one conducting that tour, it’s likely that he knows this information. Suppose that Merlin only arranged the tour and someone else carried it out (unproven), he’d still need enough knowledge of Camelot, especially for a visiting foreign princess. Merlin is not a scholar or even formally educated (insofar as we know). But he is the one that Arthur entrusts with a task that is, essentially, part of foreign diplomacy. 

In episode 4x12, Arthur learns of Morgana’s attack on Camelot and instructs Merlin to lead everyone else to safety. This requires the people taking Merlin’s orders. 

I guess the most obvious example of how influential Merlin is comes from episode 5x12, where Merlin openly mocks the king of Camelot during a game of dice, much to the amusement of the commoners. Of course, Arthur’s improved character plays a huge role in this, but so does his reliance upon and trust in Merlin. And if this is normal for the commoners to see, then they already know Merlin’s high position in the royal household.

How could I forget that Princess Mithian had to win over Merlin in order to gain support for her engagement and eventual marriage to King Arthur? Brilliant strategy on Princess Mithian's part, and yet more proof of how much Merlin's opinion mattered.

Reaching out to the worldwide collective fandom: I’m realizing I love shows where the main character(s) have a secret that could really get them in trouble if anybody found out, and deal with the ramifications of them having to hide that secret. Specifically in their emotions and dealings with others characters. Recs?
