Technically, Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan were simply agents of (necessary) evil forces which, at the time, were deemed good. One such force is what we know as imperialism, or expansion of an empire in the simplest of terms.

When a country wants to expand its borders, it means less land for other countries (e.g., China to Japan, China to Philippines, US to basically every other country).And this means that they can tap the natural resources which were supposed to be for the people living in the now-possibly war-torn country (e.g., Libya, Syria, Iraq).

So to everyone celebrating Thanksgiving, screw your imperialist praise. :)
