Cosmic Web
The concept of the cosmic web—viewing the universe as a set of discrete galaxies held together by gravity—is deeply ingrained in cosmology. Yet, little is known about architecture of this network or its characteristics. Our research used data from 24,000 galaxies to construct multiple models of the cosmic web, offering complex blueprints for how galaxies fit together. These three interactive visualizations help us imagine the cosmic web, show us differences between the models, and give us insight into the fundamental structure of the universe.
An awesome work of the Center for Complex Network Research
using nothing more than newton’s laws of gravitation, we astronomers can confidently predict that several billion years from now our home galaxy, the milky way, will merge with our neighbouring galaxy, andromeda. because the distances between the stars are so great compared to their sizes, few if any stars in either galaxy will actually collide. any life on the worlds of that far off future should be safe, but they will be treated to an amazing billion-year-long lightshow. a dance of a half a trillion stars, to music first heard on one little world, by a man who had but one true friend.

Fiery Looping Rain on the Sun [Full HQ video]
Eruptive events on the sun can be wildly different. Some come just with a solar flare, some with an additional ejection of solar material called a coronal mass ejection (CME), and some with complex moving structures in association with changes in magnetic field lines that loop up into the sun’s atmosphere, the corona. On July 19, 2012, an eruption occurred on the sun that produced all three. A moderately powerful solar flare exploded on the sun’s lower right hand limb, sending out light and radiation. Next came a CME, which shot off to the right out into space. And then, the sun treated viewers to one of its dazzling magnetic displays — a phenomenon known as coronal rain.
Constellation embroideries were one of the first things I made when I started sewing, I wanted to go back and redo one that’s more like how I work now. It’s interesting to see how it’s changed, the fabric is dyed from a blend of colours to get the colour I wanted rather than just grabbing some blue, and the stitching is far neater!
Popped this on my etsy HERE, if people like them I might do a few more, they’re fun :)
