Who makes fun of Light Skin people: Darkskin people, but rarely, and from a place of anger and sadness, that lightskin people do not use their privilege to help, or admit to their privilege Who makes fun of darkskin people: Everybody. Every age group, every gender, every demographic, every city, every state, every continent, every class, everybody. Including dark skin people.
This.

People of color & Skin bleaching
Our society has undeniably favored white beauty over and over again. Seems like there is not enough room for anything other than Eurocentric characteristics. Straight hair, green or blue eyes, refined noses and white skin. That is the what is considered universally beautiful in our society. Something that is UNATTAINABLE for most women and men of color.
Today I received a patient; Female, late 20s and black. She came in the ER (which was yet again short on staff) with excruciating pain, irritated skin, irregular heart beats and trouble breathing. Her hair was falling out, this woman couldn’t even scream as heard as she wanted to because she could barely open her mouth. At first glance you’d think she escaped from a burning house. After we revealed that her esophagus was severely damaged her sister decided to reveal that she had been using chlorine bleach to lighten her skin and decided to “take in some” in order to cleanse her insides. Her sister said that she’s been doing so because she wanted to “look pretty” and that she “read somewhere on the internet that skin bleaching is popular amongst celebrities and people of color wanting to look nicer”. She apparently looked up home methods to lighten the skin as fast as possible and many people testified to applying home cleansing solutions would help. This woman is a victim of our society’s abusive standards.
‘She’s stupid’, ‘She brought this upon herself’, ‘She’s got to learn to love herself’ many might argue. The problem? POC constantly feels attacked, ugly and unwanted. It is so hard to love yourself, be in harmony and have good mental health when society that consistently makes you the butt of every joke, tells you your hair is ugly, that your skin looks dirty or that you aren’t good enough. The problem is that we as a collective don’t make it easier on them. POC celebrities/ role models bleach their skin and get surgeries to rid themselves of their natural ‘POC’ physical attributes or they photoshop their skin to be lighter! The people that should be empowering POC are also complying to Eurocentric beauty standards while ALSO setting whole new standards for everyday POC folk.
People are harming their bodies and killing themselves in order to reach a standard or because they can’t.
This woman? She could have died. She’s now in intensive care, with burnt skin, a damaged esophagus and honestly? we do not know if she will lose her vision.
Skin bleaching isn’t uncommon. Obviously most of the time people use beauty products or medications to achieve lighter skin; none of which is recommended.
POC you should know that ALL skin colors are beautiful. You do not have to change the way you look or the skin color you have to be considered beautiful. If you feel the need to harm yourself or recognize symptoms of depression please contact your doctor or psychologist. You are important, beautiful and loved.
The world is beautiful because of natural and natural beauty. Damn shame that white is seen as the real source of beauty.

Story of cities #29: Los Angeles and the 'great American streetcar scandal'
The last train on the last line of greater Los Angeles’ Pacific Electric streetcar network made its last run on April 9, 1961.
Between 1938 and 1950, one company purchased and took over the transit systems of more than 25 American cities.
Their name, National City Lines, sounded innocuous enough, but the list of their investors included General Motors, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Standard Oil of California, Phillips Petroleum, Mack Trucks, and other companies who stood to benefit much more from a future running on gasoline and rubber than on electricity and rails.
National City Lines acquired the Los Angeles Railway in 1945, and within 20 years diesel buses – or indeed private automobiles – would carry all the yellow cars’ former passengers. Does that strike you as a coincidence?
