If I can't love you as your lover, I shall love you as my friend
shoutout to project hail mary for showing one of the biggest and what sometimes feels like most unattainable aroace fantasies coming true: having a best friend who doesn't value you less than their romantic partner.
this part of the book destroyed me because imagine rockyâs fear and panic as he tries to figure out how to save his ship that has been taken over by taumeoba and no longer has fuel; and heâs still so, so far away from home and heâs thinking he failed not only his people but his mate and grace, too; and he thinks heâs destined to die the same way as his crew mates when he came so close to being able to save erid; but by some unexpected twist of fate, he hears graceâs voice come through his radio and he realizes heâll never have to be alone again.

One time I was at a pub trivia night with some writer friends and we almost won but there was a tie. As a tiebreaker they asked us and the other team to write down as many moons of Jupiter as we could in two minutes.
None of us are very into astronomy so at first everyone was like oh weâre gonna lose but there were three of us at the table that night who were either former classics majors or otherwise super well read on Roman mythology and the three of us were like give us that paper right now and we just took turns writing down all of the lovers of Jupiter from mythology that we could.
So of course we won lol
You really never know what random niche knowledge you have will come in handy at trivia night. You really donât.
really tired of seeing the idea that women & girls are less likely to be diagnosed with autism because it "presents differently" so widely accepted even in progressive spaces
it is also widely accepted that women get raises less often because they don't ask as much as men. this is objectively not true.
it is also widely accepted that women are more talkative than men. this is objectively not true.
it is also widely accepted that women are taken less seriously when speaking because their speech patterns are associated with a "lack of confidence". this is objectively not true. [1][2][3]
every time we talk about gender discrimination, people look for an explanation that starts with women's behavior.
and every fucking time, actual research shows that across the board, women actually don't behave that differently from men.
women aren't diagnosed less often with autism due to "presenting differently". it's gendered medical neglect, and weaponized diagnoses disproportionately applied to women (e.g. BPD, HPD, bipolar, etc.)
THANK YOU
Look, as a kid, I had the stereotypical 'boy autism'. I was not fucking good at masking. I was not using my 'superior feminine social skills' or whatever to learn the rules of the playground and hide my autism from the doctors.
I was sitting in the corner rocking and talking to myself, putting my toys into regimented lines, throwing up every time I ate anything with the Wrong taste or texture and lashing out at classmates who upset me because I didn't know how to use my words.
My mother claims that she first realised I might be autistic when somebody suggested that my brother might be autistic, and maybe she should read up on the condition, and then she got hold of a list of symptoms and realised that it was literally just a list of things about me.
Everyone fucking noticed. The kids at school noticed. The teachers noticed. The educational psychologist noticed. Like again, short of wearing a sign around my neck saying 'ATTENTION: MAY CONTAIN AUTISM', there really wasn't any way I could have been more obvious about it.
I apparently told one of the doctors that the reason I didn't have a friend at school was because the school had an odd number of students and it was therefore impossible for everyone to pair off without there being an outlier. That is⌠not a neurotypical line of reasoning.
Anyways, I didn't get a diagnosis until I was seventeen. I did get incredibly close at the age of ten, but was turned away at literally the final hurdle.
Why? Because the consultant in charge of making the final decision openly admitted that he didn't believe that girls could get autism.

this gag NEVER fails to make me laugh. watching them all file in one by one and collectively laugh harder every time the next guy walks inâŚi could watch videos of this practical joke all day
Their faces as they collectively realize theyâre married to the funniest women on the planet
whenever people say âitâs just a prankâ about minor cruelty, remember: the people laughing hardest here are the people being pranked. youâll notice that they arenât hurt, or upset. theyâre enjoying it. they feel loved and included.
thatâs how you make a good prank.
I keep putting this back in my queue because it means I restumble upon it and it always makes me laugh. So delightful
It's important to note that Chekhov's Gun was not originally about foreshadowing, but a piece of advice to playwrights about how every element in a play should have narrative relevance. The corollary to Chekhov's Gun is that if a gun mounted on the wall in act 1 is never used at all in the entirety of the play, then it should be omitted from the play entirely.
also very true
Very funny example of writing advice that is very specific to its medium getting overapplied outside its scope. Can you imagine how awful set design would be if people tried to apply this to movies. 60 minute post credits scene in the Matrix where Neo has to fire every gun that appears in the "lots of guns" scene
