I would talk to you about Seivarden Venndaai, but as much as I enjoyed Ancillary, and Seivarden, I don't really have much of substance to say about her except that it's rare a character who is a twerp is also permitted to have depth and I appreciate it when it happens. Could you be tempted to talk to us about Seivarden Venndaai instead?

I am so sorry for letting this ask languish for so long. Probably because I got overwhelmed at the prospect of thesisposting about My One True Beautiful Wife. But let's give it a shot on this beautiful Seivarden Sunday!!!!

what I love about Seivarden. Structurally she's the deuteragonist (of AJ; the sequels are more ensemble). In another story she'd be the love interest. In another story she'd be the villain. In another story she'd be the annoying protagonist. Instead she's Seivarden.

When I first read AJ I was not doing well mental-health-wise and had very low self esteem and Seivarden was very important to me because she is allowed to be a complete loser. When we meet her she is a total failure with zero redeeming qualities but with just enough pathos to get us invested. And she builds a new life and a sense of self, with structured support but she does it because she chooses to. And it's not easy, and she constantly backslides and fails and discovers new flaws in herself, but the narrative allows her to recover and keep going.

She's a mirror to both Awn and Breq, but while Awn dies and becomes an idealized martyr, and Breq conceives of herself as dead and living out a ghost existence, Seivarden has to suffer the indignities of being alive. It's painful and embarrassing but she keeps going.

and then on top of that she's a loyal dog who just wants to be allowed to sleep at the foot of Breq's bed. she's mega hot and accidentally charming. she's a war criminal and also a dad jokes boomer. she calls Sword of Atagaris a pathetic excuse for a soldier and then apologizes to it for being rude about its captain. while they are locked in combat. she's canonically submissive and great in the sack. she has epic autism moments but also is an accomplished socialite but also gets bored or stressed out two minutes into any conversation. there are a lot of things very wrong with her. she's my beautiful wife.
