I would absolutely LOVE to experience Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico. I don’t have a set location in mind. I’m fascinated by Mexican culture, and I adore Mexican food. I’ve been longing to visit Mexico since I was about 16, and I bought the album Guero, by Beck. It sounds like a strange thing to spark an interest in a country, but it did!

I have always had an interest in slightly darker stuff, and I collect skull themed items and clothing, so when I found out about the festival, I knew this was something I’d love to see one day.

A Bugaku performance at the annual Hō-Taikō Hanami Gyōretsu (Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s cherry blossom viewing parade - 豊太閤花見行列) at Daigo-ji temple (醍醐寺) in Kyoto. The title of the dance is Ranryō-ō (The King of Lanling) and is performed to ward off evil accompanied by gagaku music.

Examples of traditional oklejanki - a type of pisanki (decorated Easter eggs) from the region of Łowicz, central Poland [sources: 1,2,3,4].

Word pisanki is derived from the verb pisać (”to write” or in old Polish: “to paint”) as a reference to the old tradition of leaving messages or wishes on the eggs. The word oklejanki describes the type / method of decoration and comes from the verb oklejać (meaning: “to paste”+”to cover”) - they are being decorated by pasting small scraps of paper on the egg, similarly to the creation of traditional wycinanki (papercut art). Region of Łowicz has also a tradition of creating “mugs” [pictured 8&9] out of a wydmuszka (emptied eggshell) and paper.

Originating as an ancient pagan tradition, the custom of preparing pisanki was absorbed into Christianity. Nowadays, in a form of the “Easter eggs”, they are being put into the Easter baskets (remnants of old Slavic food offerings) for the blessing in churches on the Holy Saturday.

Groundhog Day 2015 – Punxsutawney Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter

Punxsutawney Phil, the American groundhog famous for his weather predictions, saw his shadow after emerging from his burrow atop Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania on Monday, forecasting six more weeks of winter.

Phil’s prediction came at about 7:25 a.m. EST in the Western Pennsylvania borough of Punxsutawney, the self-proclaimed weather capital of the world, where some in the group chanted “six more weeks, six more weeks” as they waited for the groundhog.

Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow, North America will experience six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, cold weather is on its way out. (REUTERS)
