A part of the sun goddess wishes the shift in the grandmaster's exterior was loud.
Loud meant it was easier to disagree with. Loud meant she could read the fury, the discomfort, far easier than what was being given to her now. Anger, was a much better emotion to carefully work with, than disappointment. It radiates from Kuai Liang as she listens, still refusing to look at him as her chin remains low, and the sun goddess can feel her eyebrows knit together in a frustrated frown.
She pays attention. The sun goddess always does. Olivia must being who she is and how mankind is towards her. A piece of her knows her words would've, might've, offended the grandmaster and she thought he would understand why she would be so concerned for the frost dragon and the eggs at her level. At the immortality she carries, comes with a large span of experiences and witness to what mankind has done to grand creatures of the earth, big or small, legendary or mundane. It is a list she would not speak of because it would be a conversation that could go eons if given the detail and time.
Olivia sees how Kuai Liang is with others. That is something she, painfully will not admit out loud, admires and adores about him. The respect towards other warriors even when the are men like Johnny Cage, who use humor in all they do. The mutual understanding he carries with Hanzo Hasashi, once an enemy, now a friend and ally. The patience, along with the restraint, he holds with The Lin Kuei recruits he has chosen in the time they have known each other. The sun goddess knows that Kuai Liang cares.
He has always shown he cares, with that silent heart of his, so carefully used that most do not take notice. So much so that the sun goddess cannot help but see how others perceive him as a result. How the Elder Gods have looked down upon the grandmaster and call him 'cold'. How many, allies and enemies, think he cannot carry humor or charm, all because The Lin Kuei's reputation for being cold-hearted and aggressively cruel.
It is why she worries. The heaviness on her heart, for these frost dragons, are never at the doubt of Kuai Liang. It is the doubt she holds for those who would not feel the same way he does. Centuries alive, holding a wisdom many do not see of the sun goddess sometimes, knows how mortals have treated the beasts. For their pelts and armor. For their strength and their speed. For what they can provide, as trinkets and prizes, than actual companionship.
Kuai Liang is not a poor judge of character. His current warriors, proud and loyal, would not dare betray him and what they have strive to create in the new era. Yet Olivia cannot help but think of Frost. Of Sektor. Of those that Kuai Liang trusted with himself and his home, and was betrayed by others for it. The sun goddess, this woman who cares deeply for the grandmaster of The Lin Kuei, did not wish the past to repeat itself.
She understands why her opinion, this truth of how she feels, would offend both Kuai Liang and Jǐngbīng. This connection they have created. A bond between dragon and grandmaster. One that Olivia could not understand, not fully, as her connections to animals was created through a natural binding she carries with those of her element and terrain, or because most animals who become her companions are not permanent with her life. They were free to leave, to return, and to never to come back if they so wished it, because that is what animals do. They are not living creatures who remain tethered when they no longer see the need.
Her voice comes out suddenly, quiet and stern, trying not to allow her pride, that godlike arrogance to cloud her thoughts, along with the ache that she has disappointed Kuai Liang.
"I ask you because you are the only person I know who could understand why I ask this. I know what has happened to you, I know how others used you and turned your mind and body against you. You, above all others, know what happens when someone you trust might betray you, grandmaster."
"Do not misplace my need for reassurance because of the doubts you might think I hold for you. I will never doubt you, grandmaster, because you are not someone who gives treachery as I have seen others do." It has nothing to do with The Lin Kuei and their history, nor does it have to do with Bi-Han, but of others who have betrayed the grandmaster she holds regard for. "You one told me, long ago, how you do not trust easily. How you do not trust Elder Gods, those of divinity those who demand gratitude or worship. I believe this to be true of you as I have seen it." There's a pause and the the sun goddess keeps her composure professional and true. "But when you do trust someone, be it warrior, immortal, or beast, you trust with all that you are. It is not a weakness that you do this but others might it is."
Olivia does not speak of Frost. There was no need to remind the grandmaster of his fledgling he had once mentored all those years ago. Such implications did not need to be spoken of so bluntly when they both know what the goddess means.
"You... you started with speaking of how Jǐngbīng was a military value to The Lin Kuei. You cannot be troubled by my own discomfort when that is what you had explained to me. Of course I requested for you to explain yourself, Grandmaster Kuai Liang, but I did not expect you to tell me that you would use the frost dragons and the young as part of a functional military unit."
"I did not think you would turn Jǐngbīng or the future frost dragons into weapons. What I am concerned of is the warriors who might be trained to be riders and gain the trust of the dragons and use them for... wicked intentions when they see what power her babies contain. A dragon's trust is one that does not question, Grandmaster Kuai Liang. They will soon fight their own kind for someone they consider loyal companion. I have witnessed such among others who have taken dragons and gained their trust in what they believe was right for their clans, flying into wars, killing innocents, and all because they believed their riders were trustworthy."
Sapphire eyes, feeling that gaze of the cryomancer, glances up towards Jǐngbīng now. Feeling the way the beast stares at her, in agreement to what her rider speaks to the sun goddess, and that in itself confirms Olivia of what she says.
"Jǐngbīng would fight me to the death if I were a threat to you, no matter how much trust or-" She stops, that smile of relief she once held for the grandmaster fading into a frown"-... whatever alliance we've created together as friends. It does not matter what history we hold with each other, she will sooner turn me into a statue of ice or bite my head off than question what I am doing is right or wrong."
Olivia sighs, knowing her thoughts and worries of this would not strike the grandmaster, but she cannot remain quiet of this. Being silent is never wise for any relationship, professional or casual, and the sun goddess was never one to keep her thoughts closed off to those she cares about.
"Your judgement is not one I doubt. Believe me. You have chosen your warriors wisely and with care. You see promise in others I do not, for I am not someone who chooses others the way you do, because I am far too... restricted in who I let in and who I allow to hear my reflections." Now her gaze shifts to Kuai Liang's, her frown deepening, ashamed and wounded. "Most do not acknowledge what I give no matter how concerned my intentions are. I am not an Elder God nor a goddess many hold in high regard. I am worshiped to provide warmth and life to Earthrealm." Nothing more, nothing less. "People have prayed to me to shed light on the truth and yet do not approve of what I say. It is no surprise you would think the same, Grandmaster Kuai Liang."
"I know you will keep the frost dragons safe. I know you will hatch the eggs, tend to their upbringing, and your home within The Lin Kuei will provide the shelter better than anywhere within Earthrealm. As I said before, I am happy you brought the eggs, I am relieved to see you alive, and I know you will be the right man for this task that you have chosen for yourself. No one else could, Grandmaster Kuai Liang."
The sun goddess takes a step back, then another, then a third, providing distance from the warrior. Sapphire eyes trained on him, then to Jǐngbīng, who remains where she is behind the grandmaster, obedient and ready for what her rider will do in this conversation.
The cold around them increases and the sun goddess does not shiver or twitch at the change in temperature. The cold, in all it's majesty and power, does not vex her the way it does most in this realm.
It does not trouble her the way Kuai Liang's gaze does nor the silent anger he carries underneath his words.
"You do not need my solace then you do not need my presence or advice. Perhaps it is best I take my leave for you to continue onto your training with the frost dragon and her unhatched young. A sun goddess has no place near beasts who have always kept their distance from the warmth of my light." To return to the Shirai Ryu. To tend to the clan who would consider what she says, without fear that what she says or how she feels is not scrutinized. Her hands, that were once calm and intertwined, now settle at her sides, fists tightening slightly, her lips shifting into a grumble.
"Jǐngbīng had no reason to trust you and yet she did. You seem to forget that I did for you when we first met. I saw you, that scar, of your past, and many would say I have hundreds of reasons to distrust you but I never did. I would not be standing here, telling you how I feel, if I did not trust you would do the right thing."
Silence again. Heavy against the space between the dragon rider, his companion and the sun goddess.
"Your reassurance is accepted and I trust that anyone who dares try to harm or use the frost dragons with maltreatment will be your responsibility to tend to. I trust Jǐngbīng to do what must be done should that day arise too."
