That should have been reassuring. It was not. It sent a shiver down her spine. She could not shake the sensation that they were barely scratching the surface of something vast and nameless — buried but breathing, rising up from its grave.

It was there in the room with them, its presence as unmistakeable as her mother's, looming over them, making the walls feel closer, the air colder and stale.

Cosette felt sick. She nodded faintly, waiting for her mother to continue. She had questions, of course. Her mother had explained nothing. Questions but no words, no voice.

If Cosette felt sick, then God only knew how Fantine felt. The weight of revelations pressed against her chest, her shoulders... She was breathing despite every inhale feeling as if she was taking in water.

She knew this day would arrive eventually. She thought that she had prepared herself, but the hypothetical and reality were starkly different. Fantine felt entirely unprepared. She had always found the words to explain things away. Now she sat, her mouth dry and empty.

Swallowing the dryness in her throat, Fantine shifted in her chair. She had desire to be brave and yet all she had achieved was cowardice.

"He and I did not meet on the best of terms." She had opened what she had sworn to keep closed. "There was a... disturbance—" it was kinder. Fantine wasn't sure she was ready to relive snow down her back nor the anguish she felt as her nails dug into the man's cheek "—and he arrested me. That moment of my life is... Blurry. I was incredibly sick and the details were lost by fever. Luckily your father intervened and we find ourselves here."

Silence fell between them, one she knew was heavy with questions Cosette was bound to ask.

A continuation of a random blog sending a DM telling you they reported your account, a random blog pretending to be the tumblr staff tagging you to tell you that your account has been flagged.

However, there are some rather blatant red flags to look for.

Misspelling, a string of random numbers, and talking about services tumblr doesn't offer, such as monetization.

Report and block.

It had been sudden. Nini had known who Meg was from the moment she saw her dancing. Nini, as a dancer, believed everybody had their own quirks when it came to dance. No matter how long they had been taught by a teacher to iron out every imperfection to blend into an ensemble, there would be little quirks that made a dancer stand out, whether it be for the better or for the worse. She had a sinking suspicion at the very least, but it only grew with time. Nini understood why Meg wouldn't have recognized her. When they met, she was still going by Marie and was a straggly little thing who hadn't grown into her dance or her body. She had been a teenager and still naive.

Nini wasn't sure what made Meg realize, however. But there had been a discussion in her dressing room, and Nini had said something or other about having danced since she was young, and suddenly there was a hand around her arm.

❝ took you this long to come back to me, huh? ”

Light eyes glanced at the hand that clasped the bare skin of her upper arm, where her velvet glove just ended with a raised eyebrow. ❝ You approached me. You were the one to come to the Moulin Rouge. ❞ She said, her voice monotone as she glanced up from her arm to the other woman.

Meg had done everything in her power to forget then. The dimmer and further away the opera house was, the better she slept at night. Drinking it down only caused the people to grow hazy too. Next to Christine, Nini had been Meg's closest friend.

All she had left of Nini was a trinket that she had shoved into a pocket, a drawer, a cupboard. Every reminder did nothing but cause her chest to ache.

As it did now. Nini's eyes pierced into Meg's own, the woman's words an acidic accusation. In her defence, Meg wasn't sure if it was meant as such, but it felt like one regardless of intention.

Meg's breath was loud in her ears, the weight of the last decade sitting in her throat. She had known Nini was familiar; it was the fear she was wrong that kept her from approaching earlier than now. Meg wasn't sure she could take such a mistake— not after losing everything she already had.

If Nini only knew what it took to return to France, let alone Paris. If she knew that Meg's departure was against her will. That never saying goodbye was not a choice Meg had willingly made.

"You could have said something." Meg's voice was uncharacteristically weak. The bite—the venom—was nowhere to be found. She felt defeated in a way she couldn't quite place. As if Nini's apparent rejection summarised the way Paris had also seemingly abandoned her. "My ignorance was not intentional." So much could change in ten years. She wanted to explain, but the shame of it all kept her tongue tied. "Are you not even the slightest bit pleased I have returned to you?"

Erik could feel every bit of the body pressed against him, flushed heat against his natural cold, her heartbeat pounding where her chest touched his. panic and nausea rose in his throat, try as he might to master it.

her point was instantly proven : this was entirely out of his control.

part of Erik wanted to push Fantine away as she began to fiddle with his shirt, but her leg around him and the insistent grip of her hands prevented his escape. instead, he forced himself to listen to her words, leaning in the better to hear her.

despite her insistence, indignant rage nearly boiled over within him. he could just kill the man. one less monster in the world, preying on the miserable. but logic quickly cooled his senses. what would happen to the women in the man's employ, then? likely they'd be worse off than they were even now . . .

as much as he loathed to admit, she was right and he was in the wrong. he would have to play along, at least in this moment, if he ever wanted her help her or any of them in the long run.

She did not wish to see how her hands trembled. Holding him there was as much for her own good as it was his. She never wished to acknowledge her fear— to admit that men terrified her felt like an unfathomable defeat. To think that she once feared men due to Félix's lapse of committment and not their fists.

The footfalls of her pimp grow louder; each click echoes off the cobbles below their feet and rebounds around her skull. She cannot tell if her headache is the drink or her exhaustion, but the sound of shoes against stone simply causes it to throb more prominently.

She snatches his purse from his hands. In this moment, his words mean nothing. All men promised was violence, Erik's words meant little to her. In Fantine's observation of men, they all craved various levels of cruelty.

She makes a point of flashing said purse quite plainly towards her pimp, a coy smile crossing her lips before she takes Erik's hand and coaxes him away.

Her feet carry her quickly along. She wishes to escape everyone's gaze. When she does, she wretches.

It catches her by surprise, the way her fear becomes nausea and leaves her heaving with tears in her eyes. There is nothing to bring up. All it does is find her chasing a breath, desperate to breathe. Her hands find the nearest wall, nails scratching against them with her exertion.

Eventually she can focus, vision blurry through moist eyes. "You cannot return home with me. My landlord will forbid it." She is already indebted and terribly behind on what she owes. Her chest burns and shaky breaths dominate her speech, but she pushes on regardless. "A pretty sum will be expected for this amount of time. You understand, don't you?"

Headcanon;

Fantine still has moments in the verses she coexists with Javert & Valjean of being afraid of them.

It's not a personal thing, but even after years of working through the trauma of everything so intrinsically entwined, one bad dream, one sudden recollection, and she feels those initial emotions towards them again.

Usually a few hours alone helps her reset herself again, but what frustrates her the most is the not knowing when it could happen. She gets caught in the belief that healing is linear when it has been proven time and time again to her that it's an ongoing effort.

Erik's brow furrowed in irritation as the smoke from Meg's cigarette curled near his face, wafting it away with an agitated flick of the wrist. the inner singing instructor that still resided in his mind wanted to reprimand her, tell her that she was ruining her instrument, but what was the point ? with the kind of drivel he had her singing these days, it wasn't like she needed the full flexibility of range she might once have possessed.

❛ none of the mainstays, of course. ❜ Erik barely looked up from the score he was editing. ❛ it's spreading among the stagehands, the transient chorus girls, the new carnies. ❜ his lip quirked in irony. ❛ they seem to think you're sleeping with me for solos. ❜

mouth curled down again as he moved the crystal paperweight out of her range to protect it from being used as an ashtray again.

❛ they seem to have noticed you're one of the only people who gets to actually see me. ❜ Erik didn't sound particularly bothered by this, if anything, there seemed to be a touch of amusement in his tone. ❛ it's not worth killing over, and I suppose it helps with the air of mystique, but it's not doing wonders for your reputation. ❜

eyes cast to study her in his periphery, guaging her reaction. ❛ I'll leave it to you to handle as you see fit. I certainly don't want any of those chorus girls hunting me down thinking they can get ahead. ❜

If Meg was to be honest with him, she'd much prefer not to sing another one of his 'numbers' another day in her life. Unfortunately for her, she needs the money; that, and her mother is here. Whether Meg understands her seemingly unfaltering loyalty to the woman who has (and continues to) destroyed her life, she doesn't know. Perhaps the tether is more of a memory of before. A hope they can return there someday.

She drags the paperweight back towards her, making a point to scrape it across the desk and across his papers. She doesn't particularly care for his possessions. The man can purchase multiple new ones should he desire. Perhaps she'll take it home with her— she's needed a new one for months now.

"And when have you ever cared for my reputation?" He might not care to meet her eyes, but that didn't mean she couldn't watch him, scowl, even. "If sleeping with you rewards me with... this... then I struggle to understand their jealousy."

She extinguishes her current cigarette in his paperweight, smashing it hard against crystal so to satisfy some underlying anger, but it's hardly enough. Part of her wishes to smash it against something. How ridiculous of a life this is! Girls jealous for scraps! Meg used to dance in operas! This? It is the bottom of the barrel.

"You've killed for much less, where has your sudden understanding of perspective come from?" Perhaps it's age. He's hardly able to move like he once did.

"Perhaps I'll direct them to Hammerstein." She almost laughs, but instead contents herself with lighting up another cigarette. A flick of her wrist extinguishes the flame and she exhales another puff of smoke. "They'd have more reason to be upset if I was sleeping with him."

Cosette frowned. Her suspicions had been confirmed. There was something between her mother and Javert, even if neither of them would name it. But Cosette struggled to find comfort in her mother's cryptic admissions.

What had she told her, really? Not the story, only that there was one.

Cosette's gaze dropped to her lap where she had begun to wring her hands, restless and unsure what to do with herself.

"Did he... hurt you?" she asked, slowly.

Fantine watched Cosette in silence. She had been talking in riddles for as long as she could remember— even before Valjean. Valjean had done nothing but enforce it with his own reluctance to face the past.

The sight of Cosette wringing her hands caused Fantine's brow to draw together. Only when she went to ask what was wrong did Cosette speak again.

A shaky exhale replaced the silence, her tongue briefly wetting dried lips.

"... He did not hurt me, Cosette." Not physically at least. Whatever mental torment had come from their shared history, it wasn't particularly intentional, either. He was cruel in a way he believed was righteous; she could not blame him for behaving how he believed the system wanted him to. Or could she?

Her eyelids pressed close for a moment. She didn't want to linger too long on the morality of something long since passed.

"As I'm sure you know, he was a policeman. That is how we met... Years ago, now."

His words barely make it past the sound of her own, heaving breaths. She couldn't find her words; the sensation of him passing innocently behind her still lingered.

She wished to crawl out of her skin, bathe and desperately scrub away this feeling seemingly clinging to her like tar.

"Nothing." She forced the word out, sweaty palms wiping against the fabric of her dress and partially clutching at skirts. She felt as if she was to let go, she'd forget where she was entirely. "Nothing."

Fantine forced herself to glance up, catching Erik's gaze with her reiteration.

How could she even begin to explain? Could she even explain— did she even want to? Fantine wasn't sure she'd ever be able to verbalise the reason for such a reaction.

"It's me." That's all she could manage, her voice trembling with the effort to keep herself together. She already felt embarrassed (stupid, even) for her reaction to something she was sure Erik had not thought twice about. "I must be tired." Not that sleep brought any peace. "Perhaps I should retire for this evening."

The proximity coupled with his words caused Meg to push him away if only for some breathing space.

"I don't need your heroics, Erik." Her voice remained low. As much as she despised this situation, she wasn't stupid. She could hear the seriousness in his voice. "I've been in worse positions than this. If anything, I'm sure I could handle this alone."

All Erik had ever done was cause problems. If, in the rare instance it wasn't a situation of his own making, he usually made things worse.

As for Meg, she had become adept at covering up his mistakes— correcting them before they were made, even. Whatever he had gotten them into now, Meg could sweet talk her way out of. Make promises as an exit plan.

"Whatever mess you've made will be my responsibility to clean up, so why don't you just run along and allow me to do that?"

She pushed the man against the wall, her heart thudding with the ever loudening footsteps of her pimp. She did not need a white knight, not like this and not here.

The fallout would be on her and, as a warning, against the other girls too. As much as she made a point of not having friends, Fantine also did not wish for the other women to be harmed.

"You had nothing under control." She played with the buttons of his shirt before taking the fabric and forcing them to around so it was her against the wall, one of her legs around his hip. "If you want this to blow over, you're going to have to play along."

She felt as if she could throw up. Having someone thinking they could challenge the status quo so brazenly was unthinkable.

Her lips found his ear as her hand found her skirts and encouraged them up, mumbling as she did, "you have no idea what that man is capable of..." Her breathing came erratically. "Money talks louder than apologies here. You buy my time and he'll be kinder to all his women, do you understand?" She swallowed her grief, her anger, "or do you want me to become an example tonight?"

Meg nearly choked on the smoke of her cigarette. She would have been offended if it wasn't so absurd.

When did anyone see them together? In fact, when did anyone actually see this man at all? An affair with a stagehand, a musician, even a dockhand, Meg would understand, but him?

Her laughter filled an otherwise pregnant silence. She has learned how to be ugly; her laughter more resembles a cackle. One that means to demean before she can be demeaned herself.

An eyebrow rose as she took another drag of her cigarette before deliberately tapping the ash into a makeshift ashtray that happened to be something of Erik's.

"And who exactly is 'they'?" She sat, teetering at the edge of a chair in an office she made a point to spend as little time as possible in. "Do I really need to be wasting my time on silly rumours? For someone so familiar with a lasso, I wouldn't have expected these rumours to have made it back to either of us, Erik."
