Alright because people keep questioning me about what counts as a rarepair, I’m gonna be autistic for a moment and unleash my fandom culture special interest knowledge. So:

What counts as a rarepair?

I’ve seen a lot of people question my inclusion of slightly more popular ships (Blazamy, Espilver, Sonaze, Sonjet etc) saying they aren’t rarepairs.

However, a rarepair is a very loose term.

You must keep in mind that rarepair is a term meant to apply to a wide variety of situations and scenarios, for basically EVERY fandom. And considering there isn’t exactly a middle term between popular ships and rarepairs, the term rarepair has to be pretty loose to fit with a wide variety of ships. Ships that just never took off for whatever reason, ships with characters who barely interact, ships with characters who NEVER interact, ships with unpopular characters, ships that are actively overshadowed, canon ships between obscure characters, crackships etc.

I think the issue regarding this misunderstanding here is we, tumblr users, are more open to lesser known ships like Blazamy, Sonaze, Espilver and such. Tumblr is a much more welcoming space for more niche, fun ships. But I made this poll taking into account other spaces like sonic Twitter or Instagram, as well as the fact that sonic the hedgehog is a fanbase of millions. I’m sure there are plenty of people who didn’t at all know Sonic and Blaze were even shipped. And even then these ships are objectively overshadowed by many other significantly more popular ships, which by definition makes them rarepairs.

I honestly was not expecting so many people to disagree with me about this term’s meaning but I do take it very seriously as I am currently researching the topic of rarepairs. That’s literally why I got the idea to make this poll tournament.
