More just like a creative release valve here but hopefully some folks like this! Now for my more knowing kaiju friends out there? This idea relates to the unmade Heisei films Godzilla Vs. Gigamoth which was a precursor to Godzilla Vs. Mothra (1992). In it, the King of Monsters faced off against not only the divine goddess MOTHRA but the unmade monster known only as GIGAMOTH.
Now according to the story? Gigamoth more or less came into being as a result of a nuclear waste dump on an island in the South Seas is contaminating the nearby land including a buried Mothra egg. This egg, similar to the finished product film, was unearthed by a landslide following a typhoon. However when the egg hatched, not one but TWO Mothras emerged from the egg, not unlike the original ending of Mothra's first battle with the King of the Monsters.
Unlike the Showa era though, while one of the twins was relatively unharmed, Gigamoth was described as malformed, mutated by the toxic waste possibly seeping into the egg. An evil twin by any other name, Gigamoth did what any other young and deeply troubled child would do and went out for some fun in the BIG CITY! As Gigamoth itself was a radiation saturated mutate, Godzilla was drawn to her which brought the two monsters to blows. Eventually cocooning itself, it's metamorphosis is interrupted by the JSDF and their maser cannons which leaves her wings immature and incapable of flight. Still the rampage continues!
To come to a point, Gigamoth begins layign MULTIPLE eggs and once more comes to blow with Godzilla who's atomic breath actually aids the Gigamoth in fully maturing her wings. Through use of an anti-nuclear bacteria, Mothra being the carrier, she skewers herself on an injured Gigamoth's horn which dissolves her twin and her eggs.
Now this is of course a rushed review of the unmade story, if you'd like to hear more about it? I'll post the link below which hopefully will provide a more befitting retelling of the story. Now as for why I am doing this crash course? Well, first of all? I wanted to make sure everyone was acquainted first with Gigamoth as I proceed into how I think a reimagining of Gigamoth could play out. Before I begin though I want to give a special shoutout to @mooncalfe-art who within their current work with Mothra and Supergirl (Check that out by the way, seriously? The art is amazing and the story telling is honestly just plain fun) as well as my NUMEROUS PESTERING QUESTIONS? Has been a big inspiration for this idea, honestly wouldn't have come to this idea if it weren't for her. Bootlicking out of the way now, LET'S GET INTO IT!
MOTHRA VS. GIGAMOTH: BIO-WAR
The idea here is a bit inspired by Godzilla Vs. Biollante and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla but in fairness? They were among some of my favorite of the Heisei and Millennium eras within how they explored genetics and bioengineering, myself fun fact being a BACHELOR of biomedical engineering (Currently looking to go masters and then MEDICAL). The idea here is that some private military group at one point got their hands on MOTHRA's DNA. Now this seems bad of course but we've seen this before, again bringing to mind Biollante and Kiryu in terms of such effects that can be had with messing with Godzilla's DNA or tissue but you have to consider that Mothra isn't just another monster, she is quite literally? A goddess
Something that isn't entirely capable of being explained by science, she exists on the edge of the unknown for which lies beyond the veil of life as we know it. So what happens when you decide to try and REPLICATE the divine? Nothing good. Gigamoth in this is not a radiation mutate but the result of a botched attempt to clone Mothra. Why is she malformed? Speaking scientifically right now? Cloning isn't an easy science, especially when you're trying to clone something you don't have a solid understanding of within terms of biology. It's flawed, trying not only to reset the adult donor nucleus to an embryonic state but there's also genetic errors, certain genes failing to turn on at the right time, even the culture broth from which a tissue sample is grown!
So, Gigamoth is a mutated clone then, interesting enough but here is where that divinity deal comes into play and it would be HEARTBREAKING with Gigamoth. See, for the most part of Mothra's existence? She exists in a cycle of death and rebirth. She dies, egg hatches, she is reborn, she lays the egg, and the cycle starts again, very Phoenix-esque when you look at it. So what happens to that cycle when a divergence is created? It's chaos in the cycle of rebirth for Mothra cause in this? There can only be one at a time, there is only SUPPOSED TO BE one at a time, the transition of the soul if you want to call it that to a new vessel.
Two existing? It's like a glitch, a tug of war and for Gigamoth? IT'S DRIVING IT CRAZY. It's not rampaging just for the sake of rampaging or looking to kill Mothra out of some misguided perception of superiority. Gigamoth as well as Mothra knows that this is unnnatural but the issue comes down to who is to remain and therein lies the struggle, the frustration and anger following the metaphysical tear being created between the two. This isn't a battle that could've been avoided, the second Gigamoth was 'born'? The story can only end one way....
It's a short idea but what do you all think? Drop a comment below to voice your opinion and even share some ideas of your own if you want. Whatever the case? Stay safe, have fun, and stay scary!
