Okay, so I just had a copy of this game fall into my possession. It’s a Sega game called Roommania #203, and you play as an invisible god-like entity living in the room of an ordinary college student. His lifestyle is pretty lame as it is, and your goal as this god entity is to stage a kind of intervention in order to make his life more meaningful.
You interact with the main character by throwing little balls at things to direct his attention to them(Much like Pac Man 2: the New Adventures), and on days while he is out of the room you can mess around with him by moving stuff around, lock doors, ect. The game’s director, Tomoko Sasaki, said she was inspired by having developed an obsession with watching people’s day to day lives via webcams.
Another interesting thing about this game is that the main character is a huge fan of a fictional pop star called Serani Poji. Serani Poji released a real album in 1999, and is actually a duo, one of which is the game’s composer and director. The soundtrack itself is very pure Shibuya-Kei; sunny, upbeat, lounge/bossa nova styled pop.
The game originally came out for for Dreamcast in 2000 but I picked up PS2 port that came with a Serani Poji remix CD that is really really dope. I’m gonna upload some of these tracks, they’re a good time.
