What is a pressure reducing valve?

A pressure reducing valve is commonly known as a PRV. It is used for lowering and regulating water or air pressure between the upstream and downstream sides of a pressurised system. It will sit in line on a mains inlet pipe and allow the user to adjust the desired downstream pressure via a dial or wheel on top of the valve. Once this pressure is dialed in, the pressure reducing valve will continually open and close slightly in response to upstream pressure and flow rate. The goal of a PRV is to maintain safe pressure on the downstream side based on the settings of the user. They work by converting high pressure at the valve inlet to a significantly lower pressure at the outlet side.

How is a pressure reducing valve different from a pressure relief valve?

A pressure reducing valve is different from a pressure relief valve even though they both share the same PRV acronym. A pressure reducing valve is designed to regulate the air/liquid pressure coming through the inlet depending on the amount of liquid/gas currently in the system. It will adapt by opening and closing the inlet to the relevant amount required to keep the flow from the inlet consistent. This differs from a pressure relief valve which is designed as a fail safe that will open suddenly to release some liquid or gas from the system if the level gets too high. This means that pressure relief valves need to be checked and maintained every time that they end up being used. A pressure reducing valve is vital for the day-to-day, whilst a pressure relief valve is vital for use as a failsafe incase of any malfunctions down the line.

The Engineering Design Process

As part of their learning, children will be taught the engineering design process. This process is a series of steps that engineers follow to find a solution to a problem. While the design process is iterative it follows a predetermined set of steps, some of these may need to be repeated before moving to the next one. This will vary depending on the project itself, but allows lessons to be learnt from failures and improvements to be made. The process is as follows:

Define The Problem: What is the problem that needs to be solved? What are the limitations and requirements? 

Brainstorm Possible Solutions: We teach that good designers brainstorm possible solutions before starting a design

Research Ideas: By researching past projects, you can avoid the problems faced by others. 

Establish Criteria and Constraints: Having listed potential solutions and determined the needs of the project, the next step is to establish any factors that may constrain your work. This can be done by revisiting the requirements and bringing together your findings and ideas from previous steps.

Consider Alternative Solutions: You may wish to consider further solutions to compare the potential outcomes and find the best approach. 

Select An Approach: Once you have assessed your various options you can determine which approach best meets your requirements

Develop A Design Proposal: Having chosen your approach, the next step is to refine and improve the solution to create a design proposal. 

Make A Model Or Prototype: Use your design proposal to make a prototype that will allow you to test how the final product will perform. 

Test And Evaluate: each prototype will need testing, re-evaluation and improvement. Testing and evaluation allows you to see where any improvements are needed.

The Design: Once testing has been completed, the design can be revised and improved. 

Create The Solution: After your refinements have been completed and fully tested, you can decide upon and create your finished solution.

What Is The Difference Between a Barrister and a Solicitor?

Barristers and solicitors both practice law in the UK, providing legal representation for their clients. Traditionally, the key differences between the two were that solicitors mainly worked directly with clients on strategy, collating court documentation, and other legal work outside the courtroom, whereas barristers represented clients in court after being instructed by the solicitor working on the case. However, the Bar Standards Board’s direct access scheme changed this. The scheme first started in 2004 but expanded to its current form in 2013. The scheme authorised qualified direct access barristers to accept instructions from members of the public directly. So, currently, what is the difference between a barrister and a solicitor in their day-to-day roles?

Key responsibilities of a solicitor

Solicitors mainly manage day-to-day legal issues, ensuring that their clients are given the support they need. They will represent the client from the beginning, listening to the client’s issue, explaining how the legal process will work, and completing legal documents such as claim forms and witness statements. Solicitors usually do not appear in court on behalf of their clients and will instead instruct a barrister to do this.

Key responsibilities of a barrister

When a case goes to court, the solicitor handling the case will instruct a barrister, who will read the client’s documents and familiarise themselves with the case. The barrister will often meet with the client in advance of any hearing and give an opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the client’s case.

Barristers are the ones that you think of in court. In higher courts (but not in the lower Family Court or tribunals), they will wear a wig and gown. Barristers are usually specialists in a particular area and are called upon for advice on complicated issues.

Barristers are able to represent clients in the highest of the UK courts. They know all of the correct etiquette and are able to provide the best possible representation for their clients in court.
