“Remind me not to eat any baked goods offered by that woman. She might try to poison me.” Sophia whispered to David as they watched Nancy walk away. She smiled at Tai who now had her full attention. He heart practically melted when Tai told her he was going to buy something for her at the candy store.

“Aww Tai. You don’t have to do that. I want you to save your money and spend it on something you really want.” Sophia told the boy with a smile. She opened the back door to let him get in and so she could strap Juliet back into her seat.

Tai hopped in and even helped get Juliet get strapped in before he clipped himself into his booster seat. Giving his baby sister a bright smile and tickle to her belly since she enjoyed that. “But I wanna make you happy Sophia! That’s what I want.”

That made David chuckle, it was good to see him getting closer to her. He had been worried in the beginning that this wouldn’t work out due to how Tai was keeping from getting attached to people too quickly but he just naturally seemed to enjoy Sophia’s company. It spoke volumes in itself. “Hey, once the little man makes up his mind about something? It’s almost impossible to get him to change it.”

"Okay Tai. You can get me something small." Sophia said as she held up her hand to receive a high five from him. She got into the front seat and buckled herself in. She reached down for her bag and grabbed the water bottle she brought for Tai. She handed it back to him with a smile.

"Tai, you have to help us pick out what movie to watch tonight. Is there anything on Netflix you want to watch?" Sophia asked as she handed her phone back to him for him to go through the movie titles.

Sophia hugged Tai back and bent down so Juliet could hug her brother also. She straightened up when one of the nosy soccer moms came over. Sophia tried to keep a straight face as the older woman gave her a judgmental look. Sophia balanced Juliet on one of her hips and took David’s hand with her free hand.

“Girlfriend actually. We’ve been dating for a months now. Right darling?” Sophia smiled at David. She caught Tai’s questioning look and gave him a quick wink. Tai quickly smiled and nodded his head. David was right, Tai would play along with whatever they said.

“Right baby.” He even hammed it up by taking her free hand kissing her knuckles, smirking at the look on Nancy’s face.

“Ah well congrats. I know it’s been difficult since you and that nasty split with your ex. Just you know, give us a call sometimes? You know we care about you.” She looked deflated but was trying to power through it, a dirty look thrown at Sophia very briefly.

Tai went to take Sophia’s hand once his father released it. “Sophia! It’s candy store day! I wanna use my allowance and buy you something!” He knew she loved brownies and muffins and over the last couple of months they had this routine with the candy and bakery. Now he wanted to do something nice for her since they had to play along and make Nancy go away.

Sophia nodded and got out of the car after him. She opened the back door and got Juliet out of her car seat. She knew the toddler would want to give her brother a hug. She balanced Juliet on her hips as she looked around at all the parents picking up their children. Sophia spotted the group of soccer moms standing close by and gossiping to each other. Sophia pretended not to notice when one of them pointed towards her and David.

“Well it looks like we got their attention.” Sophia whispered to David as she waved at Tai.

“Yup, can clearly see that.” He rolled his eyes a bit but was more happy to scoop Tai up into a hug. “How was school today?”

“Good dad!” He hugged him back and once he was set down, went to hug around Sophia’s legs before he peeked up and saw one of the moms coming over. “Hi, Ms. Jenkins.”

Ms. Jenkins, aka Nancy, was a mother around her mid thirties with bright blond hair and tan skin. Looking pampered and not like she lifted a finger on her own which was true. She mostly lived off a combination of trust fund and the financial support of an ex husband. Her daughter was one of Tai’s friends who happened to be extremely sweet. One wouldn’t even think they were related with the stark contrast. She strut right over to them and smirked at David. “Oh hello Davie, you know we only see you a couple of times a week. Hard at work?”

David nodded politely. “Yeah, between the kids and the office? It’s a little hard to balance sometimes but luckily I have Sophia here. A saint I swear, sent down like an angel to help out.”

Her dark brown brow raised at the younger woman next to him. “Oh right, your newest addition to the family? The nanny?”

That made him frown but he hated causing scenes, so instead he knew Sophia could handle this since they had a plan after all to settle this sneering and gossiping that the ‘rich housemom’ group enjoyed doing.

Sophia hugged Tai back and bent down so Juliet could hug her brother also. She straightened up when one of the nosy soccer moms came over. Sophia thought it over for a few seconds, before deciding that it couldn’t hurt anyone. Plus it would be good to see David one up the extremely flirtatious soccer moms. “Alright. Let’s do it. Plus I can finally say that I’ve had a relationship that’s only lasted 10 minutes.”

Sophia smiled. “I’ll be the best fake girl friend you ever had. It will make all of your other fake girlfriends look like trash.”

“All done.” Juliet said from the back waving her cup. Sophia reached back so she could hand the cup to her. Sophia put the cup into the diaper bag.

They were coming up to the school, which had plenty of other cars waiting for their kids. David saw a spot and quickly went for it, beating out another van which he had to wave at after with a knowing smirk. Sometimes the parental life could be savage and he’d adapted to it over the years. 

“Tai Tai!” Juliet, happy as ever, could see her big brother waiting outside. Talking to a group of friends, his crisp black and grey uniform on and Batman backpack on. He spotted the car and gave them a wave before finishing up his talk.

David looked to Juliet and winked. “Tai will play along, he doesn’t like the gossiping moms either. Let’s go on out and greet him.”

“Maybe the sight of me might scare them away?” Sophia suggested. “Not all of them know I’m the Nanny. Maybe one of them might mistake me for your cool hip new girlfriend.”

She laughed and then realized that she didn’t want to have all of the soccer moms gossiping about her. She heard what they talked about the times she picked up Tai alone. They could be super mean. “On the other hand. Maybe it’s best you face them alone. I’ll just sit in the car and take notes in case you need a witness for later.”

“Actually… that isn’t a bad idea.” He smiled to himself a bit at her first suggestion. Why not be the single dad with the ‘hip and young’ girlfriend? If they hadn’t known she was the nanny by now then that was on them now wasn’t it? “Come on now, I’m sure you have some snappy comebacks of your own should anyone try and talk down to you.”

David chuckled and looked to her before winking playfully. “Do me the honor of being my ‘girlfriend’? Just for ten minutes or so.”

“That will be nice. I’ll take some pictures of it and we can make a scrap book out of it.” Sophia added. “While you and Tai are painting Juliet and I will go get the grocery shopping done.”

Sophia looked back at Juliet and the toddler smiled at her. They had been shopping buddies since Sophia started working for them. “we could get something special to make for dinner while you guys are painting.”

“Something special? Now you’re just spoiling us.” He teased a bit there, he loved Sophia’s cooking. Whatever she made always put him in a bright mood and it did make him more intrigued and willing to try new dishes. Ones that were healthy for him and the kids but also being tasty at the same time.

One of these days he wanted to thank her for all she did by surprising her with a little something special of his own, but he couldn’t think of what just yet. “Almost there, about five minutes away. Hopefully this is gonna be smooth sailing. Last time I got stopped by one mom in particular… she brings on the heavy flirting and it is cringeworthy.”

“Here you go miss Juliet.” Sophia said as she handed the little girl her sippy cup.

“Thank you.” Juliet said before taking a long drink from the cup. She was so polite. Sophia was proud of the manners she was teaching Juliet. She hoped that she was the best behaved toddler in the whole city. But she knew that she was probably pushing it. She had seen some world class temper tantrums from Juliet. Those only usually happened when it was close to nap time.

“You are very welcome.” Sophia answered before opening a water bottle for herself. “Do you want one?” She asked as she held it up the extra one she had packed in the diaper bag to David.

“Yeah thanks.” He took the bottle and waved it up to her in a cheer before opening it at a red light to take a swig. In his head he was already mapping out the weekend, wanting to spend as much time as he could with his baby boy. After all Tai was starting to shoot up and soon he’d be a hormonal pre-teen before he knew it. Plus he promised rewards for good work and he’d been doing just that.

“So movie tonight with the kids, plus candy store… maybe bakery for you Miss Sophia?” He smiled over at her gently. “Tomorrow I’m thinking I might start that project Tai wants to do, paint some things on his wall? Have a whole section where he paints something meaningful to him every year. So he can see his progress.”

“That doesn’t seem like a personal question at all.” Sophia answered with a smile. She clapped along with Juliet when the song ended as she thought about David’s questions. Would it be weird to say that she loved her job. It was the truth. She loved the kids and living in the penthouse. She even enjoyed David’s company, sometimes more than her own friends.

“I really like my job. I don’t really have any issues. I love working with the kids.” Sophia smiled at David. “Let’s face it I didn’t have much of a social life even before I took this job. I was too focused on school.”

“You still have friends and all, I like to think about you too Sophia. Not just as my kids’ nanny but… someone I care about.” He caught himself before he said ‘someone he’d be interested in’. She worked for him, that was extremely inappropriate to even put out there and he figured that once the kids were old enough to be able to handle their own she’d go on to the next set of kids who needed her help.

David, keeping his eyes on the road, did peek to see the GPS. About halfway there if they didn’t hit another large patch of traffic but he doubted that. 

Juliet was humming along to the next song but then started to quiver her lip, seeing her sippy cup in the front with Sophia. “Juice please? Juice?” 

“Okay honey. Sophia? Could you hand her that? I screwed it on pretty tight, no accidents like last time.”

"Here you go miss Juliet." Sophia said as she handed the little girl her. Sippy cup.

“Or the lemon poppyseed scones, or the brownies.” Sophia admitted with a smile. Going to the bakery was her favorite place to go, just like the candy store was David’s favorite. A song from Moana came on the playlist and Sophia joined Juliet in her attempt to sing along to the song.

She picked up her phone and did her best to take a selfie with the three of them in it. “That’s a good picture, Juliet. We should print it out and hang it up in your room.”

Juliet grinned as she sang along to the sound of Where I’ll Go, happy about that and the picture. She was a natural when it came to photos and she just a ball of sunshine when told to smile or say cheese. 

David was sure that she’d end up in some field of art, if not at least appreciating it when she got older. For now, he was just all smiles at his beautiful baby in photos. “I think we should use the good photo ink when you want to print that, hang it along with the collage you’ve got going on.” A specific wall in Juliet’s room that so far had about five photos of her family. One with him alone, another of Samantha, one of her and Tai, himself and Tai and then the three of them together during a beach trip with Cherry and Alex that the latter had taken for them.

“So, Sophia, may I ask you something? Might be a bit personal but… I was wondering how do you like things so far? Comfortable? Is there anything I can do to accommodate you more? I want you to have a personal life outside of the kids and school.”

Sophia started the playlist with and oldie, but a goodie, Under the sea. Juliet cheered and started to dance in her car seat. Sophia started singing along as she waited for David to get into the car.

“It sounds like I am going to have three kids hyped up on sugar later.” Sophia was teasing David of course. She thought that it was adorable that he had a sweet tooth. Plus it was fun to watch him walk into a candy shop. She wasn’t sure who got more excited him or the kids.

“Mm-hmm, three kids plus a huge energetic doggo who loves to go on walks… and consequently pull you along so he he can say hi to the other dogs around.” A few times when she had the leash with Biggie, the large dog was prone to using his strength to get a bit of control, wanting to socialize with the neighborhood pets. 

David started up the car and backed out of the garage, into the usual Manhattan traffic. Good thing he knew to get a head start to Tai’s private school. “I’ve seen you indulge too, Miss Sophia. You can’t seem to resist those pies fresh from the bakery.”

“All right. I got the playlist all set up.” Sophia smiled and held up her phone so Juliet could see. She shook her head when David asked if she wanted to drive. She hated driving in the city when she didn’t have too. Of course she would do it when she absolutely had to, such as to take one of the kids to the doctor.

“You go ahead and drive. I gotta a be the DJ! Isn’t that right Juliet?“ Sophia smiled at the toddler. 

"Yes. Princess songs!” Juliet said as she clapped her hands.

He smiled and got her into her car seat, buckling her in tight and right in the middle so she had a view of both of them as well as the road ahead. Once Juliet was strapped in, David went to the driver’s side seeing as Sophia was already hooking up her phone to the USB and in the passenger seat buckled up.

“Okay, off we go. I’m thinking we might end up stopping at the candy shop since Tai’s been getting nothing but A’s on his reports. Been awhile since we went in and Grace told me that they stocked some new things we might like.”

“That’s right. We’re going to go get Tai.” Sophia smiled at Juliet. She grabbed the diaper bag along with her purse before walking out the door. She knew that they were just going to Tai’s school. But it was always helpful to be prepared. It was no fun to sit in a car and have to smell a dirty diaper.

She pushed the button for the elevator as she waited for David to lock up. The doors opened right as he walked over with Juliet. “What would you like to listen to in the car, miss Juliet? We can listen to Raffi or I have a new Disney playlist on my phone.”

“Disney please.” Juliet loved some Raffi but she was feeling in a ‘Disney’ mood, of sorts. Considering she was being called princess constantly it was a wonder that she didn’t think it was her name after all this time.

“Disney. Hoo, I hope they have something new on.” David could tolerate children themed music for a certain period of time before it drove him crazy. Lucky for his kids that he grew up on the older films and had an appreciation for the soundtracks to his favorites.

As the doors opened to the parking garage, he took his keys from one pocket while balancing the toddler, the beep from the 2017 Toyota Camry he’d recently gotten as the more kid-friendly car (and Sophia’s for whenever she wanted to use it). “Did you want to drive? Or should I? Up to you Sophia.”

"All right. I got the playlist all set up." Sophia smiled and held up her phone so Juliet could see. She shook her head when David asked if she wanted to drive. Sophia smiled as she watched David walk out of the kitchen with Juliet. He was such a good dad to her. It was clear to see that he adored her. Juliet was definitely a Daddy’s girl. She took the plates from the table and started to load the dishwasher. She placed the flat iron in the sink to wash it. Once she was done with the dishes, she cleaned up Juliet’s high chair and the table. She was just finishing wiping down the counters when she heard David and Juliet in the hall way.

“I’m ready to go when you are.” Sophia said as she folded the dish towel and sat it on the counter.

“We’re ready too. Aren’t we honey?” he said tot he little one he was bouncing in his arms. Juliet, dressed in a pink and white stripped shirt and white shorts with some newer sandals on her feet. White with a pink flower at the toe part. It was slightly warm and she wanted it when he held up some shirts for her to choose from.

“Tai!” Juliet seemed determined now, wanting to see her big brother. David chuckled and kissed her forehead, walking over to the large door. Whistling to get Biggie’s attention. “Okay big guy, we’ll be back in a bit. Guard the place.”

All he got was a ‘boof’ in return before the large dog returned to the nap he was trying to take in the living room on the couch.

"That's right. We're going to go get Tai." Sophia smiled at Juliet. She grabbed the diaper bag along with her purse before walking out the door. She knew that they were just going to Tai's school. “That sounds good.” Sophia answered. She watched as Juliet pushed away her plate and held up her hands to announce that she was all done. She actually finished her whole lunch including two helpings of veggie straws, Sophia was impressed. She stood up and picked up the plate off of Juliet’s tray.

“Do you want to clean up from lunch or clean up the baby? I’m happy to do either. ” Sophia had already started to wipe the squirmy toddlers face and hands.

“I can get Juliet cleaned up, if you want to handle the dishes. There’s not too many because you clean as you go. Plus you’ve been with her all morning while I was holed up in the office, want to take her off your hands for a bit.” David stood up, putting all the plates together for her before he picked up his daughter. “Okay honey, let’s get you cleaned up and into something cute.”

“Dressy time!” She was always happy to go out and wear new clothing, something he swore she got from her mother but that remained to be seen. 

For now he was just glad he had a nanny for her that knew how to handle a young girl and taught him a few things about raising a girl.

“I actually have no plans for the weekend. So a movie night sounds great.” Sophia answered as she gave Juliet some more veggie straws. The toddler had already finished her sandwich and was now working on the rest of her lunch.

“What movie should we watch this weekend?” She asked Juliet as she wiped her face. Sophia had discovered long ago that it was much easier to clean as the child ate instead of waiting until the end.

“Mmm, not sure. There’s a lot they added on Netflix I think, a few things on Hulu too.” David thoughtfully chewed on a veggie straw and watched as Juliet was finishing up, messy baby so of course she was his. He’d been the same way at her age and had pictures to prove it that his aunt always teased about showing off. 

“Let’s decide when we have Tai picked up, can browse the selection on our phones while we wait if we beat traffic and have to wait for the kids to let out.”

Sophia half wondered what the soccer moms said that scared David away. A bunch of middle aged women couldn’t be that bad. Although they did seem a bit catty whenever she had picked up Tai from school. She took a bite of her sandwich as she tried to imagine all the things the soccer moms probably said about her.

She smiled at David’s question. “That sounds like fun.” She looked over at the toddler, currently drinking her milk. “What do you think Juliet? Do you want to go on a ride and get Tai?”

She brightened at the mention of her older brother. “Tai Tai!” Even going so far as to happily pound her half drunk cup of milk in celebration on the plastic table of the high chair she was in. 

David chuckled and shrugged. “Looks like she’s in agreement. I could use someone coming along, makes the car ride less quiet and boring. Also since it’s a weekend that Tai isn’t visiting his mom I was thinking we could find something on Netflix to watch together. All four of us. If you’re not busy studying… or hanging out. Don’t want to snatch you up from your friends.”

"I actually have no plans for the weekend. So a movie night sounds great." Sophia answered as she gave Juliet some more veggie straws. The toddler had already finished her sandwich and was now working on the rest of her lunch.

"What movie should we watch this weekend?" She asked Juliet as she wiped her face. Sophia had discovered long ago that it was much easier to clean as the child ate instead of waiting until the end.

Juliet looked at her plate before looking at Sophia. Sophia smiled at her and opened the bag of veggie straws. Juliet gave her a bright smile at the sight of them. Sophia placed a large handful on Juliet’s plate before putting some on her own plate. She handed the bag to David as he came to join them at the table.

“I would have thought you would have enjoyed flirting with the single moms.” Sophia smiled at him. “They seem like they would be right up your alley.”

She grabbed a napkin and reached over to wipe the cheese away from Juliet’s mouth as the toddler munched on a veggie straw. “After Tai gets done with homework maybe he can help us make some cookies.”

“See you’d think I’d be into the single moms flirting but that’s where you’re wrong, Soph. I flirt sure but sometimes they say something and it comes off a little too strong you know?” He shrugged and popped a veggie straw into his mouth, chewing thoughtfully at the idea of homemade cookies.

“I think that would be a good idea… then again I have the crazy sweet tooth. Trying to make sure Tai doesn’t get that habit from me but it’s already too late according to his mom. Sorry but… also not sorry.” David smirked and took another bite of his sandwich. “Did you want to come down to the school with me? Make a car ride of it?”

Sophia half wondered what the soccer moms said that scared David away. A bunch of middle aged women couldn't be that bad. Although they did seem a bit catty whenever she had picked up Tai from school. She took a bite of her sandwich as she tried to imagine all the things the soccer moms probably said about her.

She smiled at David's question. "That sounds like fun." She looked over at the toddler, currently drinking her milk. "What do you think Juliet? Do you want to go on a ride and get Tai?"
