[pats her back lightly] You don’t have to thank me but you’re welcome. [shakes his head, unable to believe the sudden change of events as he sees the manacles being brandished; looks to her but catches on quickly] She got too close to the edge. It’s so windy out tonight, you see. [knits his brows together in slight confusion over the newest addition to the group but ignores the man] There’s nothing more to it. I was just in the right place at the right time. It’s a lucky thing that I was out here tonight. Perhaps we can put this whole thing behind us seeing as though it was just a slight misunderstanding.

[nods eagerly, hoping their story is convincing enough] A very lucky thing, I'm so grateful to him. [offers Daniel a small smile, then shifting her gaze to the men as they back away and return their handcuffs to their pockets] I think he deserves a reward of some sort. [looks to her fiancee, narrowing her eyes critically. Once he agrees and invites Daniel to a dinner, she nods her head] Thank you again, Mr. Kerr. I'm indebted to you.

It’s okay, I’ve got you. I promise, I’ve got you. [clutches tightly even after he falls, his eyes closed shut as his heart beats loudly] You’re safe now, Sophia. [sighs softly, his jaw clenched as he hears footsteps approaching, turning his head at the sound] We’ve got company. [sits up, realizing just how compromising a position they’re now spotted in and gets to his feet] This isn’t what it looks like. [he says to the guards enclosing on them]

[doesn't let go of him quite yet, grateful that someone was there to help her] Thank you so much, thank you... [her body goes rigid as she hears people approaching, eyes widening as she sees them move to put handcuffs on him] No! No, it was an accident, you see. [looks to Daniel entreatingly, silently willing him to play along] I was, um, looking over the edge. To see...to see the-- the propellers! The propellers right beneath the ship. [feels her dread rising as she spots her fiancee rushing over] It was a complete accident and luckily Mr. Kerr was here to save me. If not for him, I might be dead right now.

[keeps a hold of her hand, refusing to let up] I give you my word, I won’t let go of you. [looks at her head on, his jaw dropping slightly as he searches her eyes] It’s a pleasure to meet you officially. [curses under his breath, using both hands to hold her up] I’m right here. I’m not letting go! [uses all his strength to pull her up, his arm wrapping securely around her waist as he brings her further up the railing, falling back onto the deck with her still in his arms]

[grabs a rung as he pulls her up further, pushing her leg up to give her more leverage]

[grabs onto him frantically as he pulls her up, still afraid to lose her balance and pull them both over the railing] Don't let go, please. [lets out a shriek as they fall to the deck, her body trembling and hands still holding on tightly even though they're safe].

It might seem like that but I can promise you this isn’t the answer. You’ve got so much life left to live. Don’t piss it away or have anyone else make you feel like the only way to deal is by killing yourself. They’re not worth your life, do you hear me? I can help you.

[stares back at her pleadingly, hoping she’ll come around] You don’t have to understand me. Just trust me. [stands by anxiously, his eyes widening as she lets go, grabbing onto her hand and trying to pull her up] Don’t let go. Whatever you do, don’t let go; I’ve got you.

[grips his hand tightly, her heart rate spiking as the panic starts to settle in] I won't. Just don't let go of me either. [begins to turn, shaking when she finally faces him] I'm Sophia. Sophia Todd. [attempts to step up onto the railing, but loses her grip and stumbles] Daniel! D-don't let go of me! [struggles to pull herself up, forcing herself not to look down at the water]

I think if you actually let your guard down for five seconds, you’d see that I’m not so bad. Yeah, I kinda noticed that and this is me trying to pull you back. You need a reason to stick around. No. This is you attempting to end your life, giving up. It’s not the same thing. Then explain it to me.

Maybe not right now but I have a feeling my luck could change. We’ve already established that I’m a stubborn bastard. You wouldn’t leave me with any other choice. It’d be worth it but it’d be nice if you spared us both the plunge.

This is the only way out. I've tried to think of a way around it. I...this is the only time that I'll get a chance to find a way out. On this ship. Otherwise I'm just bound to this lifestyle that I literally have no say in. No one would want to live like that.

[takes a moment before looking over her shoulder at him] I don't understand you at all. [lets a few seconds pass in silence before she lets go of the bar with one hand, hastily reaching back for his]

I don’t agree with that at all. Yeah, I’m a perfectly good stranger but that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. I can see you’re from a different class from me but to hell with all those people. If you aren’t pleased, fuck them and do what makes you happy. You shouldn’t have to stick around those folks. You’re only going to stay trapped until you try breaking free.

I bet you say that to all the guys; you’re charming the hell out of me right now. Too bad, I’m taking it as one. We’ve been through this. I’m standing right here and talking to you. It’s officially my business. Uh huh, sure. I don’t have much but I’d bet whatever I do have in saying that you’re wrong. Of course not. What I want is for you to get back on the deck. And what gives you the idea that I'd want to befriend you? Has it not occurred to you that I'm at the end of my rope? Making friends isn't really on the itinerary right now. That's much easier said than done. This is me breaking free, okay? This is my way out. You wouldn't understand.

I don't find you appealing at all. Quit while you're ahead. E-excuse me? No, you're not jumping in after me. You're insane. You even said it yourself; it's freezing.

I’m a weird guy, I can accept that. You just have give me a chance to prove myself to you. The only way you can do that is by staying alive. Bleak outlook to have but I guess I can’t blame you for it. You’ve just got to surround yourself with better people.

You’re a spitfire, I like that. Yes, nothing thrills me more than finding ways to piss off complete strangers. How’d you know? You’re a special case, given the state of things. You aren’t in a position to be by yourself. Then I guess it’s going to sit here collecting dust because I’m not touching it. Not likely. There’s all the reason in the world. There's no reason for me to bother doing that. You're a perfect stranger and I'm not even the least bit invested in the idea of you. As if "surrounding myself with better people" is the simplest thing in the world. You forget that while men can do whatever they please, it isn't anywhere near as simple for a woman.

You're the most infuriating man I've ever had the misfortune of speaking to. And no, that isn't a compliment. Just a wild guess. This isn't any of your business. Thanking you, that's a laugh. Nah, my inspiration was shot anyway so it doesn’t matter now. I don’t do anything I don’t want to do. I’m here because I want to be. I think it’s safe to say I’m not like everyone else. Sounds like you’ve been around some cruddy people.

Well, now I’m offended. That just means I have to stick around even longer then. Yup, I’m officially attached to this situation. You can keep the permission, I don’t want it. Then you have awfully peculiar taste in how to spend your downtime. You can say that all you want but your word holds no weight at all to me. Most people are cruddy. I suppose my tolerance of it has just worn thin.

I couldn't care less about your feelings. Do you truly enjoy bothering people when they're explicitly asking you to leave them alone? It's non-refundable permission, you can't return it. Freezing. I don’t know how many degrees exactly but I sure as hell wouldn’t want to find out. Ah, you would think so but I’m just here with a friend of mine and he’s catching some Zs right now. I couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d take in the night, smoke and draw, you know. And then I spotted you. Just like that, change of plans.

And it seems to be working, no? You’re still here talking to me. Too late; I’m already involved so now it is my business. Allow me to introduce myself then. My name is Daniel, Daniel Kerr. You could even call me Danny if you want. If you didn’t have any doubts, you would have jumped already, regardless of me being here.

If you think it’s cold right now, just imagine how bad it is in that water. And besides, it’s not like I’ve got anywhere else to be.

It couldn’t hurt. Why don’t you let me be the judge of that? See, I could leave you alone but that wouldn’t exactly be a smart move on my part.
