My final Stop Motion Animation
Evaluation
At the very beginning of this unit I was given a brief to create a 30 second ident for Digital Cinema Media (DCM) and within this ident I had to represent one or more emotions that an audience feels when they enter the magical world of movies, and I think I did this. As I think my ident successfully portrayed the true power of cinema.
I know my ident does this as it shows the purpose of identity to the DCM company. As throughout my ident I show what the company believes in. for example in my ident I use a voice over to say rhetorical questions about how films make us feel, and some of the questions I took from the DCM website. This is good as it ultimately shows the audience what type of company DCM are, and by doing that the ident is promoting the identity of the company to a larger audience.
Although my design also helps with portraying the true power of cinema, as the screen tempo was fast. This is good as the younger target audience will not get bored, and the older target audience will be able to understand what’s going on. Furthermore, I think my design is very original and interactive with the audience, as no other ident for DCM shows how film evolved, and it is interactive as the voice over talks directly to the audience. This is very good as it connects the audience to the ident, which makes a great impact on the image of the company. However, the only limitation with my ident is that it was too long, as it went over by 8 seconds. Consequently, this could be bad as I did not stick to the brief, which means that DCM might not like it or worse find another creator.
However, another element that helped do this was the onscreen graphics. Like E4 I wanted to create something that made my target audience ‘escape from reality’. For example, for the DCM logo I used bright blue graphic animation that went in and out of the logo. This is good as it draws the audience in more, and because the colours are bright it means that it holds connotations to positivity. Consequently, this makes the audience excited about film, which is what DCM want. Even though I am happy with the logo, I am not so happy with my typography, as I think I could have made it more interesting to watch. Â
In conclusion I believe that I have made an ident that is authentic, genuine and extraordinary, but if I could do it again I would learn how to make high quality typography and maybe cut the clips even shorter so I stay in the maxim time limit. Â Â Â Â
Screen Shots
I went to composition > new composition, and I made sure the composition is set in High Definition (1920 x 1080). The frame rate has to be at 24 fps and the duration at 3 seconds. I called it what makes us watch a film, and I used a black background, then I clicked OK.
I selected the text too; and I wrote ‘What Makes Us A Film’ but then I changed it to  ‘Why do we love film’ I did this because I thought it would look more professional and attract the audience in more.
Then I match up the audio to the words. I did this by using the timeline. Firstly I got the word why and dragged it to the bottom of the screen and increased the scale by 60 and then I pressed on the keyframes for scale and position. After that I moved the timeline indicators forward 5 frames, and then decreased ‘why’ down to 25 in scale and pressed on the keyframes and then move it to where I what the word to be. Repeat this process for all the words, but move each word 2 frames, so that the word matches up with the voice over.
Before editing my ident, I put them all into bins e.g. audio. This would make it easier and quicker to locate what I’m looking for during editing. I had one for audio and clips. This would also make it easier to locate the files that I’m looking for, as they won’t all be mixed in together. Throughout editing I discovered that my score was louder than my audio. So to make the score quieter, I put decreased the audio. I did this by pressing the score<Effect Control<Volume.
After that I re-opened After Effects, and went to Composition > New Composition. I made sure the composition is set in High Definition (1920 x 1080). The Frame Rate has to be at 24 fps and the Duration for 4 seconds and used a black background. Click OK. After that I went to File > Import > File and Select the DCM illustration image and enterin mp4. Drag the enterin mp4 file onto the timeline so it is above DCM illustration layer. Move the footage so it starts on Frame 0. Use the timeline indicator as a guide or change the hot text to 0:00:00:00. With the DCM illustration layer selected, I clicked on the Ellipse tool in the toolbar at the top. Â Then I draw a circle over DCM logo. This revealed a small section of the video as opposed to the whole footage. Â Then I save the file and dragged it on to the ident. Then I pressed on its opacity and then to fade in, I created keyframe, that was 10%, and then I Move the Timeline Indicator a few frames forward and Click on the Add / Remove keyframe button on opacity again. On this I selected another keyframe, but increasing the opacity to 100%. Also at the end I faded the logo out again, and I did this by repeating what I did before, but instead of increasing, I decreased the opacity back to 10%. Once I had finished my entire video, I rendered it then exported it to HD 1080p 23.976.Â
Definitions
2D Animation- is a long-established animation style in which the image can only move along the X and Y-axis (Up and down) and cannot move along the Z-axis. 2D Animation is used in many TV shows, films and idents but over the last decayed this method has been replaced by 3D animation as it looks more realistic.
3D Animation- this animation style allows the subject to move along the Z axis, unlike 2D animation, allowing the subject to appear more realistic to the viewer. 3D animation has recently replaced a lot of 2D animation as it is used more in film, TV and video games.
Stop Motion- stop motion is one of the slowest types of animation in which many images are cut together to simulate realistic movements. Each image is taken individually and that usually consists of a small difference from the last image so that when a large amount of them are cut together a simple motion is created. E.g. walking on the street. This type of animation can take months to finish and can easily go wrong.
Layering- is a technique often used in graphic design in which layers are used to produce an image. The background layer will always be the bottom layer as it will be behind all the layers above it. This technique is generally used for organization but can also be used to create different effects, for example a stacked effect, where the images are stacked above one another.
Editing Software-is used to add interesting effects to a piece of footage, image or audio as well as to cut them together to make them flow. This is essential in editing, as it ties all the media you need to create a final production. I will be using Adobe Premiere Pro CC and After Effects for my ident, as it is available for me at college as well as at home and I can use it for free.
Memory- is how much gigabits your storage device has. For example if your shots are really high quality they will have a higher FPS, which will take up more memory than a lower quality shot, so I might want to consider how much storage I would need and whether I will need multiple storage devices for back-ups.
File Formats- is different forms of media that can be saved under different file formats. For example an image would be exported to a jpeg. Some file formats are better suited to different reasons. For example some file formats cannot be read in certain editing programs. So I will be saving my video as MP4, as both Adobe Premiere and after effects are suited to that format and include all of the features that I need on my file whereas a format like MP3 would not include the video, just the audio.
Scheduling-on a production you need to schedule with all of your cast and crew to film at times that suit everyone as well as the shoot. It’s also used for organization and meeting deadlines. The filming for my video will take place within a week as I have the benefit of working by myself and having to make a short video.
Meeting Deadlines-this is were a client sets a date for you to complete there product that they asked for. My deadline is 6/17/2016, I plan to get my production done by then by organizing my days and my work this is so I can complete everything on the 6/16/2016.
Management of Resources- this can include such things as lights, camera and audio that need to be managed; for example a DOP, manages the camera and decide which shots work best, whilst working closely with the director. As I am working alone I will have less resources to worry about.
Liason with Clients-Â a liason is recommended when you are working for a client as the creator of their product can gain a clear understanding of what the client is looking forward. A face to face liason would work best as the client can visibly show what they want and the creator can ask as many questions as they want, which will help get even closer to the clients idea for the product.
Client Negotiation- some client might want something that the creator is unable to produce, this could be due to limitations with technology or it could be a lack of experience. This means that the film maker and client must negotiate with each other to come up with an alternative idea that is both possible to create and meets the clients needs.
Quality Management-Â In a production the creator or director would have to constantly look to see if all the quality is upheld in all of the clips within the video. For this production however I will be working alone and handling all clips by myself so I will have to constantly be checking the quality of the video, which will take a lot of time to do.
Team Working- is when each member of the production is given a different role and something to finish before the deadline. Some roles are much larger than others, as some job are easier to replaceable in the production, but more important jobs, such as editor, would be harder to find as it is a specialized job. However everyone in the production must know what is happening at all times, so production can flow better. For this production however I will not be working with a team and therefor there will be no teamwork.
Presentation-Â A large amount of preparation should be done if you are presenting to a client. Also you should always be profession because if you are professional the client will believe that you can be reliable and have experience in your industry. However, If the client has any doubts about your ability, you could easily be replaced. In order for me to be prepared I will have to have a clear vision of my ident as well as pre-production. I would also need to know what I want to create as well as how I am going to creating DCM ident.
Ideas
After looking at research and my target audience for my ident, I then began coming up with ident ideas and designs. I started by mindmaping four ideas that I thought my target audience would like. I came up with a variety of different ideas that would involve special effects, bright colours etc. Through this brainstorming, I then came up with the idea of the evolution of film and how it changed the way we felt about film and the cinema. I went with the evolution of film because I believe that it was creative, authentic and genuine, which is what the brief asked me to do. Once I had decided my idea I looked at the results of my focus group in more detail to help me understand what exactly what my target audience wanted and how that can be incorporated into my idea. For example, I looked at what they said about their favourite films and I decided to incorporate the most famous films from different times and genres, so that if anyone from any age watch the ident they could somehow relate to it. I also looked at what my focus group said about the music used in the DCM ident, which furthered my idea, as I thought what if every time I show a new famous film clip the theme tune of that film will come on. I think this is a great idea as it gives the audience nostalgia of the movies they love to watch as kids, which consequently draws the audience in more to the ident and makes them understand what the company is all about. I also looked at my secondary research, which made me understand how important it is that my ident looks professional, and that all of the content has to draw my audience in one way or another. This made me have an idea to do a voice over asking rhetorical questions to the audience, consequently this means the audience will be more interactive with the ident and less likely to get bored. With all of this information and ideas, I then began to storyboard my idea for the DCM ident, which I did with great detail so I knew exactly what I was doing when it came to actually making the ident. Â

Focus Group
I have looked back at the old DCM idents with a focus group, which have helped me discover what I needed to do to my ident design in order for it to appeal to their target audience. For example, in the DCM ident called amazing, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeSEVJdl3wk, shows lot of clips showing how we feel in the cinema. Looking at this ident was extremely helpful in making me understand what exactly the target audience would want the ident to look like and what would appeal to them. Firstly, in the ident is very interesting to watch and is very original, which grabs the audience’s attention. Although it is fast paced which one person said made them interact with the ident, and also said it was creative. So in my ident I have to make sure that my clips are fast paced so the audience are always interacting with it. however other people have said that they didn’t like the music and prefer something that would make them remember more of being at the cinema. So when I do my score for my idea I will have to remember to put some iconic theme songs in, so that the audience feels what I want them to feel. I have also discovered that my focus group likes an array of film and not just one genre. So instead of doing one genre, like most of the DCM ident, I could look at all of the main one e.g. romantic and Si-Fi etc. I think this would be good as it would be easier to answer the question what is the power of cinema? and would please all of my target audience. I also did some secondary research of different cinema ident with a similar target audience. This was extremely important to do as it helped me discover what kind of image brands and identities appeal to this target audience. It also helped me understand how important it is for my ident to look professional and of a high quality because this ident will ultimately set the tone of the company and it is therefore important that the viewer gets a great impression of the ident.
Budget- my budget will be £0.00 as I will be making everything with my own video. I will also don’t need any money for travel as all the stuff I need is in my home.
Health and Safety
·        Do not eat or drink near any equipment
·        Real medical drugs are on set and should not be touched or consumed.
·        Protect and respect all wildlife, plant and trees.
·        Makes no unnecessary noises.
·        Do not run because you might trip and fall.
·        There should be no trailing wires.
·        Electrical sockets must not be overloaded.
·        There must be adequate space around the machine.
·        Heating and ventilation must be suitable.
·        Lighting must be suitable with no glare or reflections.
  Legal and Ethical Consideration
When I am creating my own ident, it is very important for me to make certain of any legal and ethical considerations. The biggest legal consideration that I will have is copyright, as most of my content is clips and music from different films, and how I have to make sure that I have got permission to use everything in my ident that I did not create myself. As I created all of my animation and typography by myself I would not have to get any copyright as I am the one who created it. However, I do not have to get the permission to publish the clips and music.
Another legal and ethical consideration I have had to think about when creating my ident is if I am representing the DCM company correctly through the ident. Â I also have to make sure that I am generally representing the DCM company in a fair and honest way and that I am ultimately not being biased, rude or unfair towards them. I know that I have represented them honestly as I have made sure that I followed their brief very closely so that my ident communicates and represents the emotions we feel when we enter the magical world of movies.
This therefore means that I am not misrepresenting the DCM company in anyway, which is important because, if I were to do so, I may communicate the wrong message to my ident’s target audience, which therefore affects whether or not they believe in their general branding and beliefs on the school.
Pre-production
What is the production process?
The production processes have three stages that are needed to make an idea become a final master copy. This process can apply to any type of media productions, for example film, music video, television and audio recording. However, the stages for production can vary for each media, for example you don’t need to do any storyboard for audio recording, but all of the media production usually have the same stages. Pre-production is the first stage of production processes. Â
 Pre-production
Pre-production refers to tasks that need to be done before filming or production begins. Usually small video company uses this stage, and they used it for meeting with the client, research, story-boarding and location planning. However, feature film companies also used this stage but they only used it for financing, screenplay, casting and major staffing. However, in this case pre-production includes:
Location scouting
Prop and wardrobe identification and preparation
Special effects identification and preparation
Production schedule
Set construction
Script-locking (semi-finalization of the script)
Script read-through with cast, director and other interested parties
 Finances
Having a financial plan is very important in pre-production, because without it you can’t develop your project. However, gaining the appropriate funds needed is very difficult, so to make it easier the company would have to plan out and consider how they are going to get curtain funds to pay for equipment, actors etc. the company would also need all forms of costs as it would help the company gain a clear indication of how much they will earn when the final cut is produced. It is also important that the company to carry out market research for certain aspects of financing such as different software’s and location. Finances can come from many people or companies to fund their project, such as; the company’s own budget, sponsors, fund raising and bank loans. In the film industry, there are many small productions, which will use websites such as ‘Kickstarter’.
 Time
Time in pre-production can be very important as arranging everything can help in the development of the project. Time in pre-production can include such things as deadlines, scheduling. This is good as it provides a target to achieve, and to keep development at a good pace, so you don’t get behind. However, if you do not meet deadlines, the company can lose money and you could lose your job. Scheduling allows the company to set work at a certain time and who is working on that curtain piece of work. This is good as it makes everything clearer and shares out the work equally. Time is one of the most important elements as it ensures that the companies project is completed on time and is at a high standard.
 Personnel
Personnel is another very important element in pre-production, as it has multiple aspects such as, the size of the team and assigning different roles. The company will also need to find skill personnel for each job so the job can be completed to a high standard. However, it is not a bad idea to hire unexperienced personnel, as they can learn on-the-job, and it would be financially better as less experienced works get paid lower wage then experienced workers. Furthermore, it is easier if there are more than one personnel doing a specific job as it is more likely that there will be less mistakes made, however it is harder to do this if the company has a small budget.
 Facilities
Facilities is another very important element to pre-production. Facilities can include making sure that the company has all the correct equipment needed to create the finished product. For example, in film to produces high quality footage you have to have the latest cameras and lighting. The company will also need to look at space, so that there is enough room for all the equipment and personnel. This is very important because if the space is too small, it could create an uncomfortable working environment, but if the space is to big it will waste money that could have been used elsewhere. Furthermore, facilities can differ in other industries, for example a radio station will only need recording studios and mixers. Additionally, it is important to know from the beginning how much facilities can cost, so it is important that the company makes a financial plan, as it will save a lot of money and time. Â Â
 Materials
In per-production there has to be a plan created for materials, so the company knows what materials they need and how they are going to get them. This also includes were the company is going to get their materials from, which might affect the overall cost, as some supplier sell with better deal. These materials can be library and archive materials, photo-library materials, sound library materials, scripts, graphics, interviews and sources. To make sure the company gets all their materials they make a priority list. They do this to understand what materials they need most so that they can get them first, before anything else. Many companies also research their materials before buying, so they know they got the best price for it, which consequently saves money. For example, Sound Libraries is a place where you can get free music and sound effects. This will save money and time for the company as they will not have to wait for copyright laws on music they have used.
 Contributors
Contributors mean what the personnel do in the development of a project. In terms of the development of film, this can include; writers, producers, director, cinematographer, film or picture editor, production sound or sound designer. All these departments make up the development team of a project. Each department contributes a certain amount of work in a certain amount of time. Although sometimes companies will ask specialist to come in and ask their opinion on a certain topic or help in their specialised department. For example, in the television industry some shows invites a random audience and ask their opinion on the show. This is good as it helps the development team understand what’s working and what’s not.
 Location
Location is probably one of the most important elements in pre-production, and location includes of accessibility, cost, distance, area. Accessibility can affect the work flow of the company because the location can be hard to access for some of the crew, which means that some people might only be able to do a few days each week, consequently this will definitely make it harder to get deadlines completed. Also the cost of a location is very important as the company would want their location at a cheap price. Although the company might want their location to be somewhere close to other companies who specialize in the same industry. This could be good as it will allow the company to create connections to other companies that might have better facilities and materials. Furthermore, distance can be an issue as it could be hard for employees to get to work, which will increase the chance of them being late and then getting frustrated, and not doing their work properly. Finally, area because it is better if you find a location that doesn’t need any work done to it. this is because it will save time and money which will be better for the company. Â
 Copyright and Ethics
In regards to pre-production, it is very important that you take into account all the ethics and copyright. Copyright is a legal process in which a person or company is given exclusive rights to print, film, perform and record a project. This helps protect any content created by someone who doesn’t what to share their product. Ethics is another important aspect in film interest. this is where moral principles influence the viewer’s choice in the film to progress the story.   Â
