Wondering if the new French Leroux adaptation shifted the main focus to ballet because it’s simply easier to make ballet look beautiful on screen than to do the same with opera. Also, ballet is probably more appealing to a young adult audience than opera, sadly.

So I don’t have a full confirmation of this, but I think part of it is that I don’t think it’s a Leroux adaptation per se. I know Variety has referred to it as one, but I think that might be just assuming because it’s called The Phantom of the Opera that it’s adapted from Leroux, when the material put out so far seems to suggest it’s based on the urban legend at the Garnier itself irl about the ghost of a composer who had been both widowed and disfigured in the fire at the Salle le Peletier and lived his remaining years in mournful seclusion at the Garnier when it opened. The (literal) ghost’s lost love in that storyline was a ballerina. This is allegedly an earlier story that Leroux based his novel on, and it’s propagated enough that a children’s book at my job alludes to it:

This would also seem to be borne out by the most classically Leroux image released so far (the boat and the masked figure) being from the ballet written by the Phantom character (whose name is Ernest and not Erik).

Ohh, I’ve heard that urban legend too, but in a slightly different version.

When the opera was on Rue Le Peletier, a young man named Boismaison fell in love with a ballerina, Nanine Doriva (whose mother was a box keeper - a bit like Madame Giry). She already had another admirer, a French army sergeant, who had Boismaison tied up and left overnight in the opera courtyard. He fell seriously ill and died. Before his death he asked for his skeleton to be kept at the opera so he could remain close to Doriva.

So maybe these kinds of stories also played a role in shifting the focus toward ballet in this adaptation.
