her comment on the tension was dangerous. if he was more of a man like his father, he would have reacted far more violently. instead, alasdair broke out in a hearty laugh, eyes crinkling at the cleverness of the italian princess. she’d likely see him a crazed man, but he couldn’t be much bothered with people’s opinions of him now. “yes, yes, i would agree. not many people have quite as much incentive to escape as i do.”
he nodded as she spoke. “poetic, isn’t it? i know it’s been done, but i often find myself looking for metaphors in life. maybe i’m a fool.” alasdair walked ahead a bit, looking to one of the fruit trees, too cold now to bear anything edible. “you don’t need to be afraid to speak your mind, your highness, if you so choose to. i’m sure you have an opinion on this whole thing like the rest of them. your sister has already interrogated me quite thoroughly,” he laughed, plucking a leaf, red and ready to fall, from a branch. “however, if you’d rather talk about absolutely anything else, that’s fine too.”
She watched his laughter with curious, but calculating eyes. It was interesting to see what could and could not be said in front of certain people. Finding people’s boundaries was extremely important to Evelina. She could make sure she never crossed them, but she then knew what made a person tick. Alasdair was a seemingly easy going man and it was rather refreshing to see it. “Only those connected to everything do. The rest are looking for entertainment in it,” She said softly. It was a dangerous comment, but not an untrue one. She knew that many people enjoyed the gossip and drama surrounding her family.
“Wise men can learn more from fools than they know,” She replied, her words clear, but as soft as ever. “And only the wisest of men were fools once.” She did think Alasdair a fool, his actions were dangerous and ill thought, but she saw the potential of a wise man there. Evelina looked at him curiously, there were not many people who wished for her to speak frankly. “I do have an opinion on this, but I fear you will find me unkind for stating what I truly think. Instead, I shall ask you, how do you plan on taking the throne? Is there not enough death in the world at the current moment? War now seems ... Ill advised.”
